Interaction with Guests
My guests can reach me by phone or email at any time in case there are any questions or issues at the house.
My house is situated in the midst of the forest, the streets are very quiet and perfect for a short or long walk. Also the back entrance to Tahoe North National park is only a mile away and it offers numerous hiking trails. Tahoe shore is 3 miles away as well as Northstar ski resort.
The shuttle to the lake/beach and Norhstar ski resort is available along I-267 during summer and winter seasons but unfortunately it's not available DIRECTLY from the house so you better rely on having your own car.
Other Things to Note
Very easy key-less entry
PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH OR PLAY WITH THE FREEZER ALARM BOX LOCATED IN THE KITCHEN TO THE RIGHT OF THE STOVE. IT MUST BE LEFT ON “ON” SETTING ALL THE TIME, IF IT’S ON “STANDBY” THE HOUSE WILL NOT BE HEATED.
IF YOU LEAVE THE HOUSE EXESSIVELY DIRTY AND THE CLEANING CREW WILL NEED EXTRA TIME TO CLEAN IT UP, YOU MAY LOOSE A PORTION OF YOUR DEPOSIT.
HEATER (winter time only): The house is equipped with new hydraulic heating system that uses pipes filled with hot water running under the floors. The system has remote “on” and “off” capabilities and being controlled over the phone. It takes full 24 hours to heat up the house. Please be sure you let me know exact hour of your arrival and remind me to turn the heat up 24 hrs before your arrival time. Once you are in the house, you can use up and down arrows on the thermostats to adjust the temperature setting to your comfort. Upon your departure there is no need to change the heater settings at all, just make sure you bring it back to initial 65 degree. You simply need to notify me about your departure hour so I can make another phone call and turn the heat off. PLEASE DO NOT PLAY WITH THE SETTINGS AND DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING OTHER THAN THE TEMPERATURE ITSELF.
LINENS: Linens and towels are provided, but please make sure you strip your beds and leave all used linens and towels on the floor so the cleaning crew knows what was used and what need to be washed after you.
GARBAGE Instructions: Garbage pickup is once a week only, on Fridays around 10 am. We have two 32 gallons garbage bins outside on a driveway in a green bear-proof box. It opens with the key attached. That box must be LOCKED at all times. Before you depart, please place all the garbage in these bins. Please make an attempt to compress/fold all your garbage so it can fit in those 2 bins. IF YOU ACCUMULATE MORE GARBAGE THAN CAN FIT INTO PROVIDED 2 BINS, YOU MUST TAKE IT WITH YOU UPON YOUR DEPARTURE. THE LOCAL GARBAGE COMPANY APPLIES EXTRA CHARGES FOR THE OVERFLOW AND FOR THE LOOSE GARBAGE THROWN IN THE BOX (NOT PLACED IN THE BINS). PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE GARBAGE IN THE GARAGE AND DO NOT LEAVE GARBAGE OUTSIDE NEXT TO THE BEAR BOX. If we get fined, the amount of the fine will be deducted from your deposit.
HOT TUB Instructions: ANY PERSON ENTERING A HOT TUB MUST TAKE A SHOWER!!! You need to start warming hot tub 3-4 hours prior your intended use. Raise the temperature up to 100F but keep the lid closed until you are ready to use it. Please note, the lid is very heavy and it takes at least 2 people to move it. The hot tub must be locked with the cable and digital lock provided AT ALL TIMES it's not in use and ESPECIALLY UPON YOUR DEPARTURE.
Always make sure to check the MODE setting and set it to STANDARD, otherwise the temperature will not raise to desired 100-104 degrees no matter how long you wait. Please make sure you cover the hot tub snugly after your use and lower the temperature to 80 degrees. PLEASE DO NOT PLAY WITH THE CONTROL PANEL AND DO NOT SWITCH THE SETTINGS AND DO NOT LET YOUR KIDS TO PLAY WITH THAT TOO. ONCE IT’S MESSED UP, IT’S VERY HARD TO BRING IT BACK TO NORMAL WORKING MODE AND IT TAKES A SPECIALIST TO DO SO. YOU MAY LOOSE A PORTION OR YOUR ENTIRE DEPOSIT IF SPECIAL SERVICE WILL BE REQUIRED AFTER YOUR STAY.
SAUNA instructions: THE WALK WAY TO THE SAUNA MIGHT BE VERY ICY DURING WINTER TIMES. USE IT AT YOUR OWN RISK. WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY INJURIES THAT MAY OCCUR TO YOU WHILE YOU ARE IN OUR HOUSE. You may want to use one of the rugs to “pave” your way to the sauna to avoid any accidents or falls on the ice. Approximately 2 hours prior to your intended use, enter the sauna, find two tumblers down below next to the door, switch the left one to MAX and place the right timer on number 1. You might need to move it past 1 clockwise first, and then return it back to 1 counter clockwise and hear a click. It will not be hot enough in an hour, the sauna apparently is not designed by “Russian” traditions, and so in 40-50 mins before the timer will go off, you need to come back and place it on 1 again and wait another hour or so. Please switch the left tumbler to MIN when you done, that will turn the sauna off. Call us if you have troubles with sauna, we will try to walk you thru the process over the phone. THE SAUNA MUST BE LOCKED USING PROVIDED DIGITAL LOCK AT ALL TIMES NOT IN USE AND ESPECIALLY UPON YOUR DEPARTURE.
MASTER BEDROOM’S BLINDS: are controlled by the remote control; sometimes it takes more than one attempt to get them moving up and down so please be patient. There is a manual way to work with those blinds by pressing a small round spot on the right top corner. But it can only be done to the lower blinds by the door and the window facing the back deck. Blinds as well as their remote controls are battery operated; we are trying to replace those batteries regularly.
GAS BBQ on the back deck: The easiest way to start a gas grill is by using electrical igniter (look for it in the kitchen drawer by the stove top). Please be advised that a metal lid gets too hot while touching the house wall and may cause the fire eventually if not watched carefully. Do not leave the hot lid open for a long time to prevent possible fires. DO NOT LEAVE ANY MEAT OR FOOD OUTSIDE OF THE HOUSE OR ON THE GRILL AS IT MAY INVITE WILDLIFE SUCH AS BEARS, COYOTES AND RACOONS.
CEILING FANS: on the loft are controlled by the toggle switch located on the loft by the desk and/or by another switch located on the wall next to the thermostat near the bathroom in kitchen (under the red metal stairs).
FIREPLACES: Please be careful with the fireplace doors, sometimes it's tricky to find how they open, look for instructions.
PLEASE BE SURE TO KEEP ALL WINDOWS OR DOORS CLOSED/LOCKED WHEN YOU LEAVE THE HOUSE DURING THE DAY OR AT NIGHT TO AVOID ANY UNWANTED AND HUNGRY 4-LEGGED VISITORS.
Kira was great, and very accommodating to our stay. The house was beautiful and beyond any of our exceptions with a huge common area and high ceilings. The location is great, quiet, very close to the lake and the ski resorts. Although there were a few issues with the house such as the wifi and hot tub, Kira addressed them quickly.
Great stay for large groups, I'd highly recommend.
I rented from Kira for a spring ski trip with my work. The description is accurate, note specifics for layout of beds (1 master w/ king on main floor, 3 beds in loft above main floor (one is a trundle), 1 queen/full separate bedroom downstairs, 2 bunk beds + 1 full in the final bedroom downstairs). Sizable hot tub and smallish sauna (didn't try out the suana ourselves). Good amount of space for hosting 8-10 people for the weekend. It's a neighborhood type development, but there's decent spacing between neighbors and the area is fairly off the beaten path (as much of North Lake is). We brought a dog and ended up paying an additional cleaning fee ahead of time. Also, note that cell reception at this house is near-zero for all networks (good or bad depending on your view) and the wifi provided may not necessarily connect to all devices, but inquire ahead and Kira will do the best to help that out. Generally there are some rules to keep the house in order, but nothing at all unreasonable or difficult to follow and there are written notices about key items. Even with a larger group there was no issue in how we handled the requirements.
Kira was a responsive host. However, the space was not yet ready for winter guests: the driveway was not plowed, making our parking situation very unsafe (we ended up parking in the street; the driveway was very steep). There was no salt for the driveway. The sauna that is mentioned in the review was locked with no key. The WiFi, which one of our guests was hoping to use to finish some work, was out of order.
We received quick replies to all of our questions (including those about the sauna), but evidently Kira does not spend much time in her Tahoe home, as she didn't know how to open the lock to the sauna, or even that it existed. For future guests, it can be opened with a screwdriver (? if you can find one?).
The checkout procedure for this house is unnecessarily onerous, as Kira asks that you wash your dishes, strip your beds, and run the washing machine with your towels. These are things that I would happily do in the home of a friend, however given that we are paying a cleaning fee already it seems ridiculous. There are also checkout procedure items that are outdated, for example one item is to ensure that the sauna key is returned to its place, in spite of the fact that there is no longer a key.
Though the home was lovely, we were very disappointed that the sauna didn't work. We chose to stay at Kira's home because of the sauna, and would have selected a less pricey option if we had known we wouldn't be able to use it.
The house was beautiful, clean and well-maintained. The three bedrooms were very spacious but the loft had no blinds or privacy. The kitchen was fully equipped and was great for large dinners. In addition Kira was very fast to respond to all our inquiries. What slightly hampered our experience was that the house was freezing the first night we arrived (it takes time for the heat to start working) and the fireplace didn't work. The key to the sauna also wasn't in place so we couldn't use it (Kira later said that if we had insisted she would have sent someone to break down the lock). All in all we had a great time and would recommend this place.
