Ocean view

Soak up the view during your stay.
Private paddle-in retreat. MUST HAVE YOUR OWN KAYAK, CANOE, BOAT. NO NEARBY KAYAK/CANOE RENTALS. Cabin has wood cook stove. Explore the beautiful forested island and other islands all around you. You’ll find remnants of old Acadian homesteads, and you can picture the time when this island was home to several fishermen’s shanties. Nature is all around (great blue herons, seals, eagles, porcupine). You can see the fishing wharf from the patio door. Sunsets, ocean, swimming. No fridge. No heat.

The space
One double bed (lower bunk); two single upper bunks, with ladder access. New mattresses, new pillows, new comforters, new sheets. Clean outhouse a few steps from the cabin. We collect rainwater from the roof. For drinking water - you can bring your own, or run the water through a katadyn water filter (provided). Lighting and USB charger is solar-powered. The cabin is not winterized. The wood cook stove will take the chill out of the air on a damp evening, but it’s not intended to heat the cabin. There is no fridge. No shower. You can swim in the ocean from various places around the island.

Guest access
You can park at the public wharf, and launch your kayak or boat from there. Under favourable conditions the paddle from the wharf is approximately five minutes. The best time to paddle to the island is at slack tide (lowest or highest tide). We don’t recommend that you paddle to island when the tide is going out as the current can be very strong. You can also paddle to the island when the tide is rising or coming in. The nearest tide chart is at Abbotts Harbour. Please refer to that to plan your trip. Internet search for “Abbotts harbour tide chart Canada”

Other things to note
This is a one-of-a-kind experience. The cabin is off-the-grid, where you can get away from all your stress. Surround yourself with nature and chill out. This is a UNESCO Starlight Reserve - so it’s a great place for stargazing, and it’s pretty quiet at night. There’s a local general store, with pretty well everything you need, 20 minutes from the wharf. The area is steeped in Acadian history, and most of the locals speak Acadian French. Nearby communities: Pubnico, Wedgeport, Yarmouth, Argyle, Tusket.
