About This Listing
Wren Barn, Limestone Brae, Hexham, Northumberland, NE47 8AN
Wren Barn is located in what is known as 'the last wilderness of England', an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and just 20 minutes from the highest market town in England, Alston, and 10 from Allendale Town, the geographical centre of GB (so they say!) So, what do you get for these accolades? Sweeping dramatic views right through to the Pennines, wide reaching sunsets, deer leaping across the fields outside the house in the morning, an array of bird call, and if you are lucky, a peek at a red squirrel or tawny owl to name just a few of the delights in this area.
We have a beautiful country cottage bedroom (double) and bathroom with a shower and bath with a view to die for. Fresh linen and towels are provided. Wifi is available throughout – though there is no mobile reception (not a bad thing we reckon.)
You are welcome to use our farmhouse kitchen: the AGA is great for drying wet clothes, warming cold hands....and cooking! A simple buffet style breakfast is included in the room price, and if the hens are on good form, you can have fresh eggs too (please note - we do not have a microwave).
Based on the borders of County Durham, Cumbria and Northumberland, we are in a prime location for visiting surrounding country and town attractions: walks in the Lake District, a day in Newcastle City, a hike along Hadrian’s Wall or taking in the local scenery on some of the many cycle routes on our doorstep. A little further, but still a day trip away, and you can be building sandcastles by Bamburgh Castle. Our local villages, Allendale and Allenheads have good English pubs to finish off a long days hike, or Hexham, just 25 minutes away, is a delightful market town with an historic Abbey, arts centre and even a little cinema! It also has an excellent train service into Newcastle and Carlisle.
However, if you simply need a rest between sightseeing and activities, or time to contemplate the meaning of life, our garden is just as a good a spot to be for a day or two.
Prices per night:
1-2 adults; £48
Children - there is space for a travel cot in the room and under 4 are welcome for free.
One quick note...Some former guests have found us tricky to find .....But those who read the directions that we send through don't. Just a tip!
There is plenty of room for parking (a bit muddy in the winter so old shoes/ Welles are a good idea)
We will give you a house key for you to come and go as you wish.
You have full use of the kitchen and fridge. We do not have a microwave but the AGA is a dream to cook on.
Interaction with Guests
Susie works freelance - sometime from home, sometimes out and about. Mickey has more regular hours but we are always up for chat over a mug or glass of something stronger, and you are welcome to join us in the sitting room in the evenings. But of course this is your holiday and there is no obligation in the slightest to make polite conversation!
Penny (dog) will welcome tummy tickles/walks/head patting etc...
The views, the air, the stars, the silence ....
Hexham has a good rail and bus service to Carlisle and Newcastle. This is 15 miles from us. We are 1 hr from Newcastle/ Carlisle by car. We are remote but that is the beauty of the place...
Other Things to Note
Hexham is our closest town for big supermarkets, but Allendale and Alston are 6/9 miles away for top- ups. Allendale shops close at 6pm and are not open on Sundays. On reservation, I will send details on how to get to us....we are easy to find, but pls take a minute to read the notes or you can end up at our neighbours!
No smoking in the house please.
Penny, whilst adorable, does not need any extra food.
Susie and Mickey are very good hosts and immediately made us feel at home. The bed was fantastically comfortable for someone like me with a very bad back. The suggestions they made for eating out both evenings were excellent. Would visit again if we were ever that way.
Prior to our arrival Susie sent us very clear directions. Mickey greeted us cheerfully. He made us a great breakfast of sausage sandwiches. The house and room was very comfortable. Their rooster woke us up in the morning - but it is a farmhouse so it comes with the territory. Also their bath towels were huge.
This was my first airbnb experience and it was fantastic! The cottage was everything I thought it would be and cooking on the Aga was the best thing ever!!!! The surrounding countryside was fabulous even though the weather was not particularly clement. The host were lovely.
I had a wonderful stay in Carrshield. The most beautiful setting with absolutely breathtaking views, and so quiet and peaceful.
Lovely comfortable room in a delightful house and Mickey and Susie were perfect hosts - so friendly and helpful and interesting!
I enjoyed meeting Penny the terrier and the chickens!
Susie lent me a Satnav to find my way in Newcastle for which I was extremely grateful.
It really felt like a home from home where I could come and go as I pleased. Would definitely stay here again and explore this gorgeous countryside.
Susie and Mickey were charming hosts. We really felt welcome and part of the family.
Their home is comfortable and set in the most beautiful isolated setting. The patterns of the clouds on the hills are mesmerising.
Would recommend them without hesitation.
Susie was very welcoming offering us a cup of tea when we arrived which we accepted and sat down with her and had a nice exchange. She opened up the house to us entirely offering the use of her kitchen if we chose and explained how to use the Aga stove. Simply a wonderful host.
Wonderful! Lovely cottage, a super couple and a very comfortable stay. Excellent all round - highly recommend.
About the Host, Susie & Mickey
Mickey and Susie are a warm welcoming, well traveled couple who enjoy meeting new people, sharing good food, country walks, reading by an open fire on a winter evening, and never making too many plans!
Susie works in the arts and - when she has the time - will splash a bit of paint about. Having recently moved to the countryside, Mickey is getting stuck into felling wood and digging a veg patch! We are the proud owners of 9 very characterful chickens and a daft, loveable dog, Penny.
