The Space

Wren Barn, Limestone Brae, Hexham, Northumberland, NE47 8AN

Wren Barn is located in what is known as 'the last wilderness of England', an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and just 20 minutes from the highest market town in England, Alston, and 10 from Allendale Town, the geographical centre of GB (so they say!) So, what do you get for these accolades? Sweeping dramatic views right through to the Pennines, wide reaching sunsets, deer leaping across the fields outside the house in the morning, an array of bird call, and if you are lucky, a peek at a red squirrel or tawny owl to name just a few of the delights in this area.

We have 2 beautiful country cottage bedrooms (double) and bathroom with a shower and bath with a view to die for! Fresh linen and towels are provided. Wifi is available throughout – though there is no mobile reception (not a bad thing we reckon!)

You are welcome to use our farmhouse kitchen: the AGA is great for drying wet clothes, warming cold hands....and cooking! A simple buffet style breakfast is included in the room price, and if the hens are on good form, you can have fresh eggs too! (please note - we do not have a microwave).

Based on the borders of County Durham, Cumbria and Northumberland, we are in a prime location for visiting surrounding country and town attractions: walks in the Lake District, a day in Newcastle City, a hike along Hadrian’s Wall or taking in the local scenery on some of the many cycle routes on our doorstep. A little further, but still a day trip away, and you can be building sandcastles by Bamburgh Castle. Our local villages, Allendale and Allenheads have good English pubs to finish off a long days hike, or Hexham, just 25 minutes away, (email hidden) town with an historic Abbey, arts centre and even a little cinema! It also has an excellent train service into Newcastle and Carlisle.

If you are heading to or from Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games, we are a great stop over point at just a couple of hours away.

However, if you simply need a rest between sightseeing and activities, or time to contemplate the meaning of life, our garden is just as a good a spot to be for a day or two!

Prices per night:
1st room - 1-2 adults; £46
2nd room (only for booking with 1st room) - £37 (please enquire when booking as we have to respond with a 'special offer' in order to have two different prices*)
Children - under 3, free; 3 -16yrs, using 2nd room, £32 (max 2 children & see above re booking*)

Guest Access

There is plenty of room for parking (a bit muddy in the winter so old shoes/ Welles are a good idea)
We will give you a house key for you to come and go as you wish.
You have full use of the kitchen and fridge. We do not have a microwave but the AGA is a dream to cook on.

Interaction with Guests

Susie works freelance - sometime from home, sometimes out and about. Mickey has more regular hours but we are always up for chat over a mug or glass of something stronger! But of course this is your holiday and there is no obligation in the slightest to make polite conversation!
Penny (dog) will welcome tummy tickles/walks/head patting etc...

The Neighborhood

The views, the air, the stars, the silence ....

Getting around

Hexham has a good rail and bus service to Carlisle and Newcastle. This is 15 miles from us. We are 1 hr from Newcastle/ Carlisle by car. We are remote but that is the beauty of the place!

Other Things to Note

Hexham is our closest town for big supermarkets, but Allendale and Alston are 6/9 miles away for top- ups. Allendale shops close at 6pm and are not open on Sundays. On reservation, I will send details on how to get to us....we are easy to find, but pls take a minute to read the notes or you can end up at our neighbours!

  • I stayed with Susie and Mickey for just one night. Their house is lovely and is situated in a really beautiful part of the country. Susie gave me really good directions for how to find them, as they are nearly in the middle of nowhere. The room was spotless with a really comfy bed. Both Susie and Mickey are friendly people and Penny the dog is super cute. Wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

  • We had a wonderful stay at Susie and Mickey's cottage. It is located in the quiet and peaceful (yet not too isolated) countryside, boasting one of the most beautiful views in North England. The cottage was full of character and charm, with a breathtaking view from anywhere inside and outside. The modern room and private bathroom were super clean and specious with nice touch. The breakfast was simple and tasty thanks to the eggs from backyard chickens. Most importantly, Susie and Mickey showed us a warm hospitality making us feel at home. We highly recommend this cottage for those who would love to have a quiet and relaxing weekend in the beauty of nature.

  • I had a great experience staying with Susie and Mickey! We had a very interesting conversation over dinner on my arrival day. They made me feel very welcome there, I was very happy staying with them. Also, their dog Penny is absolutely adorable, you'll love her!
My room had everything I needed and was very clean. The kitchen downstairs has everything you'll need if you'd like to cook.
I was on a weekend break away from London riding my motorcycle. If you're on a bike, this is a great location to stay because there are miles and miles of quiet winding roads in the area. Be sure to visit the Hartside cafe to have a chat with other motorcyclists and cyclists.

  • Susie & Mickey were fantastic hosts during our stay with them last weekend and we thoroughly enjoyed our time there. Their home is in a beautiful part of the world and I feel really lucky to have shared it with them for a short time. Penny the dog is great too and I wanted to take her home with me. Thank you!

  • Lovely people, lovely barn.

Susie, Mickey and Penny (the dog) were like long lost friends, if it hadn't been for the magnificent countryside outside we could have happily camped around the Arga and drunk tea all day long. I should also mention the strangely curious designer chickens!

    Response from Susie & Mickey:

'strangely curious designer chickens' is a first - I like that one!

I hope the rest of your stay went well, and you (email hidden) for Julia's birthday breakfast!

Do pop by (or indeed stay) if up here again. There is never a shortage of tea
All good wishes to you all

  • Spectacular location (tricky to find in the dark!) Very comfortable and cozy stay; we really enjoyed our conversation with Susie and Mickey, and they were generous with their information about the region. Their place makes a superb base for exploring the "last true wilderness" of England. I look forward to returning!

  • Susie and Mickey made us all feel so welcome and we had a wonderful evening with them. I couldn't give a higher recommendation--their home is lovely and comfortable and the scenery is breathtaking. We hope to return some day and, in the meantime, will recommend this gem to all of our friends. Don't pass this by!!

Mickey and Susie are a warm welcoming, well traveled couple who enjoy meeting new people, sharing good food, country walks, reading by an open fire on a winter evening, and and never making too many plans! Susie works in the arts and - when she has the time - will splash a bit of paint about. Having recently moved to the countryside, Mickey is getting stuck into felling wood and digging a veg patch! We are the proud owners of 9 very characterful chickens and a daft, loveable dog, Penny.
