This is a beautiful, private cabin on a secluded stretch of the Baptism River, near the shore of Lake Superior. We built the place ourselves in 1995, using largely local materials and energy-saving building techniques (passive solar, extra insulation, etc.) There is a living room, kitchen, and bathroom downstairs, and a loft bedroom (with a stunning view) upstairs; outside the sliding glass doors is a deck with a view of the woods and the music of the rushing water below.
The house sleeps 2 in a queen bed upstairs, and 1 to 2 more people on the foldout sofa downstairs; there are a couple of futon mattresses as well, but we do not recommend using the cabin with groups of more than 5, tops. (It's ideal for a couple, a family, or a SMALL group of friends). We have central heat and a shower, a full kitchen and high-speed Internet access. We enjoy renting the cabin to responsible people who love the woods as much as we do; this is NOT a commercial venture, but a way to share the beauty of the north woods on a budget. (Think of it more like visiting your own cabin than a hotel or resort.) Rates (frozen for the fourth year in a row!) are $70 for a weekday night, $90 for a weekend night (Fri-Sat., and any night before a holiday), and $460 (ie one day free!) for a whole week. We generally stay away from one-night bookings; again, this is not a hotel. Well behaved, nondestructive pets are welcome.
No other homes are visible or audible from the cabin, even though it is only a 10-minute drive from small and historic Finland, MN. Great hiking nearby includes the Lake Superior Hiking Trail; a Boundary Waters Canoe Area entry point is just 20 minutes away in Isabella. The river offers a soothing backdrop as well as the challenge, for the fishermen and -women among you, of brown trout. Swimming is possible at several gorgeous swimming holes nearby.
After you book, please make sure to look at the "Directions" and "House Manual" tabs—there's lots of information there that you need. Thanks, and hope you have a fantastic North Woods vacation!
Made drive up to Finland from Minneapolis! For a weekend excursion I would come back again. Being right on the river you get the sound of nature at your footsteps. The place was tidy and well kept. It was very cold (around 9 degrees) so we bundled up and took a walk without dying of hypothermia. I was pretty excited to find some cast iron pans to fry up some bacon and burgers! Overall we had a great time and recommend staying here.
This place is such a gem. It was just the thing that we needed. I was so thankful that it is a dog-friendly place! I loved waking up to the sound of the river flowing behind the cabin. I'd like to echo Monika's suggestion to hike the Section 13 cliffs of the Superior Hiking Trail - topography and views unlike anywhere else in Minnesota! The amenities of the cabin were great -- wifi, a kitchen with more counterspace than my apartment back home. We will be back!
Quick recommendation: the last little bit up the drive right to the cabin is a bit rutted. Be careful if you are driving a little car!
This is a lovely little cabin in the woods and we'd definitely go back! We were steps from the river and loved the peaceful, rushing sound that lulled us to sleep. Quiet and cozy, a great place disconnect and rest your mind and spirit for a while.
The cabin was beautiful! We had a lovely 5 days in the late autumn. Filling the bird feeders was totally worth it--we spent many an afternoon watching the blue jays and chickadees from the windows. We also were lucky to see a downy woodpecker! Finland was charming and had many beautiful spots to visit by car--hiking on the superior trail, the split rock lighthouse, and the boundary waters. Monika was a gracious host who was quick to respond to questions. It was quiet, cozy and clean. Our one complaint is that a couple lightbulbs were out, and the replacements provided didn't fit in the sockets. Otherwise, it provided the setting for a perfect vacation off the beaten track and we'd love to return some time for Isle Royale and canoeing! Late fall in Northern Minnesota is not to be missed, and this sylvan retreat puts you in the middle of it all.
Absolutely wonderful! You CAN see and hear the river, it has everything you need. Perfectly isolated and peaceful. Full kitchen and bath. Just perfect. It was better than we had hoped for, we didn'twant to leave.
The reservation was canceled the day before arrival. This is an automated posting.
When my girlfriend and I arrived here, the sun had gone down. We entered the cabin and did TONS of cleaning and then being very tired we went to bed. When we woke up, I took it upon myself and my trusty machete to do some clearing. So much clearing that when I was all done I had blisters on my fingers. Everything was extremely overgrown. You couldn't walk anywhere without catching poison ivy. We didn't even know exactly where the fire-pit was at first because it was so overgrown. HERE'S WHERE IT GETS GOOD> Once the paths, trails, and everything was cleared, and the inside of the cabin was clean enough (Minus the fly and larva everywhere) things changed. We were happy and having lots of fun! I moved the tv downstairs so we could sit inside on the couch and watch some movies during the raining outside.** I moved everything back to there original spots I found them.** One night we were out on the deck and were easily able to see the rest of our galaxy in the starry sky. Seeing the Milky Way together was a moment we will never forget. Another night after coming back from our trip to Devil's Kettle we had a bonfire. We were a little nervous when we started to hear a pack of wolves howling in the distance. It just made the night feel even more adventurous! The last day being there was kind of a sad one. We weren't ready to leave at all. We were just getting the hang of it being up there. The trip seemed to go by so fast. Before we left we cleaned up the place and said our goodbyes to the cabin. On our way back down home we hit every single place on 61. From Tettegouche State Park all the way to Canal Park. This is a beautiful place and a wonderful getaway. We hope to come back next year! Thank you so much Monika!
Helpful tip to future vacationers: Bring as much food as you can with you instead of buying (email hidden)-op. SUPER EXPENSIVE! Probably because its the only grocery store within miles... Also be warned of the before mentioned wolves. There are also black bears. Typically scared of humans, but can be curious if there are smells of cooking food. All in all... It started out like a horror movie, and ended like a romantic comedy. I know that sounds very corny but that's the truth!

This was a lovely place to stay. My husband and I needed a place to stay before running a trail race starting in Finland and a place to unwind after. This was perfect. The house was very clean, including the bed, pillows, etc. We were able to make a full meal to carbo load the night before and eat outside. Bugs were bad but we managed to stay outside for awhile before heading back inside. My husband did take a sauna, which is lovely!! You could see the stars from the inside of the sauna! We heeded the warning and conserved water and had no problems with water pressure or water temperature. It was definitely remote and without frills. This is not a "luxury" place or right on the water. But that wasn't what we were looking for anyway. It was perfect for us. It had great energy too. (And we left some good energy as I completed my first 50 miler!)
My stay at Monika's cabin was great the only thing is I was not as prepared as I probably should have been for the Mosquitos, flys, and heat. And if you stay definitely bring movies for the nighttime, but everything else was beautiful my kids enjoyed going down to the river and how nice the cabin was and the Finland heritage center was probably my favorite!
The cabin was clean and as pictured, but the setting was very much a disappointment: the river is not visible at all from the cabin and the path from cabin to river is pretty much impassable. There is no path along the river or even a spot to sit along it. Also the firepit is so overgrown with shrubbery and grasses that it felt risky to even have a fire there. The sauna is nice and worked fine. While the setting is pretty enough, there are no paths for hiking that do not require a drive, albeit a short one. Overall, this was not the up north cabin experience I was looking for at all. I felt that the setting description was quite misleading.
