About This Listing
We built this secluded, comfortable little house in 1995 to create a retreat from the every day pressures of life. Now we share its beauty with others looking for a quiet space that feels more like having your own cabin than a hotel or rental. Enjoy!
This is a beautiful, private cabin on a secluded stretch of the Baptism River, near the shore of Lake Superior. We built the place ourselves in 1995, using largely local materials and energy-saving building techniques (passive solar, extra insulation, etc.) There is a living room, kitchen, and bathroom downstairs, and a loft bedroom (with a stunning view) upstairs; outside the sliding glass doors is a deck with a view of the woods and the music of the rushing water below.
The house has a queen bed upstairs, and you could accommodate an extra person or two on an air mattress. We have central heat and a shower, a full kitchen and high-speed Internet access. We enjoy renting the cabin to responsible people who love the woods as much as we do; this is NOT a commercial venture, but a way to share the beauty of the north woods on a budget, and we keep the price low by relying on you to leave it as you found it. (Think of it more like visiting your own cabin than a hotel or resort.) Rates (frozen for the fourth year in a row!) are $70 for a weekday night, $90 for a weekend night (Fri-Sat., and any night before a holiday), and $460 (ie one day free!) for a whole week. We generally avoid one-night bookings; please keep in mind that this is not a hotel, simply a cabin with a local person who helps with maintenance. Well behaved, nondestructive pets are welcome.
No other homes are visible or audible from the cabin, even though it is only a 10-minute drive from small and historic Finland, MN. Great hiking nearby includes the Lake Superior Hiking Trail; a Boundary Waters Canoe Area entry point is just 20 minutes away in Isabella. The river offers a soothing backdrop as well as the challenge, for the fishermen and -women among you, of brown trout. Swimming is possible at several gorgeous swimming holes nearby.
After you book, please make sure to look at the "Directions" and "House Manual" tabs—there's lots of information there that you need. Thanks, and hope you have a fantastic North Woods vacation!
Please respect the neighbors (whom you won't see or hear from the cabin) and the wildlife (which you will). We don't charge a cleaning fee to keep the cabin affordable, so it's essential that you leave things as you found them. Thanks!
The cabin was great and exactly what we needed--affordable, clean and beautiful views. It's close to lots of state parks, and Monika left great insider tips/suggestions about nearby places to visit. My only complaint: our trip was too short. Wish we could've had more time to relax and enjoy the cabin!
This is such a special place! We (me, my husband and our 10-month-old son) spent three nights at the cabin and had a very relaxing time. My husband and I were able to cook all our meals just fine using the full kitchen and supplies from the Finland co-op while our son enjoyed crawling around and watching the birds come to the feeders. We had a lot of luck with the weather and were able to enjoy a beautiful, sunny hike on the portion of the Superior Hiking Trail close to Finland. We'd love to come back someday! Just lovely!
Gem of a place at a generous rate. Cozy, rustic and remote, yet wi-fi, plumbing AND pet-friendly: Bingo! Monika provides a lot of great information about area resources and activities which really enhanced my experience. I would recommend this place to friends and to you but then that means fewer available dates for me! Ha! Seriously, after 30+ years of vacationing on the North Shore Monika's cabin is a stand out. If you want a true north woods experience, this is the spot. I can understand why Monika doesn't want it to stay empty when she's away.
This cabin is a perfect peaceful escape from life in the city. The cabin itself is very beautiful and cozy. We enjoyed the sauna every night, hiked the state park trails and found lots of nice agates on the shores of Lake Superior during the day. It was so calming just sitting and listening to the river sing its sweet song and watch the stars fill the night sky! Even my dog Lucy was in love with this place, Im very thankful she could come and enjoy the northwoods with us. Monika is a great host and did a great job communicating everything we needed. We have already raved to all our friends and family about this place and are hoping to go back again in the future.
This cabin is everything we were hoping for and more. We will definitely be back for another stay. The view, sound of the river, and privacy are simply amazing. The perfect north woods cabin! Our kids are already asking when they can go back. Monika was great at communicating with us and makes everything so easy.
The cabin was exactly what we had been hoping for-it was clean, secluded, peaceful, and welcoming. We bought a suet feeder for the birds, as suggested, and it was great watching all of the birds enjoy their feast. The ice was just starting to break up on the river, and we utilized the grill and the sauna. The sunrise view from the loft was amazing. We spent most of our time visting various breweries and skiing at Lutsen, but it was lovely to come back to the quiet of the cabin after been out and about all day. We are looking forward to visiting again in the summer when we can fly fish in the river and hike the Superior Trail with our kids and dog. Thanks to Monica for a wonderful getaway!
