We built this secluded, comfortable little house in 1995 to create a retreat from the every day pressures of life. Now we share its beauty with others looking for a quiet space that feels more like having your own cabin than a hotel or rental. Enjoy!
This is a beautiful, private cabin on a secluded stretch of the Baptism River, near the shore of Lake Superior. We built the place ourselves in 1995, using largely local materials and energy-saving building techniques (passive solar, extra insulation, etc.) There is a living room, kitchen, and bathroom downstairs, and a loft bedroom (with a stunning view) upstairs; outside the sliding glass doors is a deck with a view of the woods and the music of the rushing water below.
The house has a queen bed upstairs, and you could accommodate an extra person or two on an air mattress. We have central heat and a shower, a full kitchen and high-speed Internet access. We enjoy renting the cabin to responsible people who love the woods as much as we do; this is NOT a commercial venture, but a way to share the beauty of the north woods on a budget, and we keep the price low by relying on you to leave it as you found it. (Think of it more like visiting your own cabin than a hotel or resort.) Rates (frozen for the fourth year in a row!) are $70 for a weekday night, $90 for a weekend night (Fri-Sat., and any night before a holiday), and $460 (ie one day free!) for a whole week. We generally avoid one-night bookings; please keep in mind that this is not a hotel, simply a cabin with a local person who helps with maintenance. Well behaved, nondestructive pets are welcome.
No other homes are visible or audible from the cabin, even though it is only a 10-minute drive from small and historic Finland, MN. Great hiking nearby includes the Lake Superior Hiking Trail; a Boundary Waters Canoe Area entry point is just 20 minutes away in Isabella. The river offers a soothing backdrop as well as the challenge, for the fishermen and -women among you, of brown trout. Swimming is possible at several gorgeous swimming holes nearby.
After you book, please make sure to look at the "Directions" and "House Manual" tabs—there's lots of information there that you need. Thanks, and hope you have a fantastic North Woods vacation!
Please respect the neighbors (whom you won't see or hear from the cabin) and the wildlife (which you will). We don't charge a cleaning fee to keep the cabin affordable, so it's essential that you leave things as you found them. Thanks!
Completely isolated, beautiful lot with view of the river. The area and cabin are both incredible. The pictures only begin to show the amazing landscape of the surrounding area, and the cabin is even more beautiful in person. Could not have asked for a better place to have a winter hiking getaway.
Monika sent a very thorough message regarding check in/out procedures, suggested hikes/trails, local amenities, etc... It was very much appreciated. She also responded to several of our questions very promptly- If only all airbnb hosts were this hospitable! We hiked her suggested routes, could not recommend them more- worth the time.
It was literally the greatest trip I've taken. Everything was what I needed. The place is gorgeous and I was honored to share your house with you. We left some extra firewood and toilet paper as well as some drawings in the journal. Thanks again.
Monika was an excellent host and gave clear directions about how to get to the cabin (it's really nestled back in the woods) and care for it while we stayed there. The cabin and surrounding woods themselves are BEAUTIFUL and the huge windows make you feel like the indoors blends right into the forest. It was a very peaceful stay for us with no interruptions from the outside world (except for a few snowmobilers taking the frozen creek route in the evening).
Despite temperatures in the 20's in January, the cabin stayed warm and cozy. The Co-op nearby has everything you could need so don't worry about forgetting toiletries or food (or hardware, or games to entertain your kids, doughnuts for breakfast, or anything else you can think of). The wifi worked but we barely used it during our stay. The kitchen was very clean and has a full complement of pots/pans and a full set of plates and glasses/mugs. However if you like to cook and plan on homecooked meals (as I did) you'll want to bring your own chef's knife, a clean cutting board, grab some tinfoil from the co-op and some tupperware for leftovers.
Monika let us know ahead of time to bring our own linens (this includes dish towels, bathroom towels, sheets and blankets/comforters. FYI, the mattress is really, really firm so if that's not your preference bring one of those foam things or an air mattress with you.
Overall we had a great time getting away from the Twin Cities at this cabin - it was secluded and quiet and the perfect way to unwind. We only wish we could have stayed longer than 2 nights and had brought the appropriate clothing to enjoy some snowshoeing and hiking in the cold and snowy weather. Monika included a list of places to hike and sightsee, and the guest book had a lot of recommendations listed and tips for the best places to go.
The cabin was absolutely wonderful, 5 stars all around! The surrounding area along the north shore is absolutely beautiful, I highly recommend this cabin to anyone looking to get away from city life.
Just got back from our vacation up North yesterday and we had a fantastic experience. The cabin was warm and inviting and had everything that we needed. It was secluded, quiet and offered us the getaway that we wanted. Getting so much sunlight and moonlight was also a major plus. It was only 40 minutes from the Lutsen Mountains for skiing and snowboarding. Monika was so easy to communicate with and made sure that we had a great stay. I would highly recommend this cabin to anybody and look forward to staying here again!
My boyfriend and I had an amazing trip this last weekend. Everything was better than I expected. The full kitchen was great, we cooked every meal. It was a great location, secluded in the woods but close enough to town and great parks. We hiked at Tettegouche State Park and it was beautiful. I would love to come back, thank you Monika!
Our stay at the cabin was excellent. The cabin was as described, clean, and everything worked perfectly. We saw and heard plenty of wildlife during our two night stay which is always a bonus.
It was just what we were looking for and we would stay here again without hesitation.
