Hi there and thanks for checking out our cottage! It's a cute spot that we've put a lot of love into. Folks have told us our place is like a sanctuary or a little slice of country.

We've done a fair bit of traveling ourselves and are always adding little things to the cottage that we would have appreciated on previous trips: maps, guidebooks, postcards, a corkscrew, hairdryer, etc. -- don't worry if you forgot something! If it's not already in the cottage, just ask.

Some people ask about safety. We've lived in the East Bay for 15 years, sampling the whole socioeconomic spectrum of neighborhoods. The only times we've ever had issues were in the "nicest" and the "worst" of them. We've felt more at home here in this slice of town that we've felt anywhere else in the Bay Area. Put on your city smarts and you should be A-OK.

That being said, there are lots of great places to eat and drink nearby whether you want to walk, bike or drive. Check out some of our suggestions in the map above. Three great new restaurants opened nearby: Moxy (excellent beer garden with amazing fries), Next Door (solid brunch and dinner fare), and Easy Creole (casual and delicious). Our favorite local spot is Sweet Adeline with delicious pastries and tasty coffee.

On Tuesdays, there's a farmer's market from 3-7pm just a couple blocks away!

And we've got chickens! Hopefully they'll start laying enough eggs to share soon. In the meantime, watching "chicken TV" is a relaxing way to enjoy the garden.

Your hosts are two UCB alums and former co-opers. Lewis is a programmer by day, musician by night. Ginger does all manner of things and works from home. We enjoy playing innkeep so after we get you all settled in, we'll leave you to your own devices, but don't hesitate to ask if you need anything.

Thanks for looking and happy travels!

Guest Access

Everything inside the cottage, attached patio, shared garden, loaner bikes (ask us first to get set up!).

Interaction with Guests

Once we get you all settled in, we'll leave you to your own devices. This is our home and we live onsite, so we're very accessible. You'll probably see us puttering around the garden or enjoying chicken theater at some point.

The Neighborhood

For some reason Airbnb doesn't know how to place us on the map. We're on the same block as Lois the Pie Queen -- a neighborhood fixture and solid greasy spoon diner.

Getting around

7 block walk to the closest BART station, 20-25min train to SF.

  • A perfect stay! Located in a great town with lots to see and do and amazing food to eat, and extremely close and easy to get into San Francisco. We took their bikes for a day in San Francisco, which is a great way to get around and see the city. Comfortable bed, warm water, lots of games that kept us entertained, a cool organ.. Really sets the place apart from any hotel or other air bnb place, gives a unique and charismatic visit of Berkeley that you can't experience with a room number and key.

Will definitely return if we ever go back!

  • Ginger and Lewis were extraordinary hosts and made us feel welcome and at home right from the get-go! We couldn't have asked for a better home away from home. Ginger and Lewis' cottage has everything you need for a very comfortable stay in Oakland/Berkeley. The whole experience was fantastic (including the chickens!), and we would not hesitate to book with Ginger and Lewis the next time we are passing through. An all-around A+ experience for us as guests. Highly recommended.

  • Ginger & Lewis were very friendly. The house was perfect for my family and the beds are really confortable. The best choice for visit San Francisco.

  • Ginger and Lewis were friendly and accommodating hosts. We didn't see them too much during our stay, aside from them welcoming us at the beginning. We were doing our own thing, so this was perfect. We stayed in the cottage. Adjusting the temperature on the bathroom sink and shower was a little tricky, but we figured it out. The bed was a little too soft for us--it would have been nice to have now support. The printed house manual with house times, area restaurants and attractions was a nice touch, along with the handwritten thank you notes from other guests. The place was pretty conveniently located to the Ashby Bart and the lovely gluten-free Mariposa Bakeshop. We just wish we would have had more time to chill out in the yard and watch the chickens! Overall, we recommend!

  • Dear Ginger and Lewis,
I'm sorry that I didn't have time to visit much
with you. It was another fine time in your homey
and comfortable place. Thanks and hope to see
you again before too long, Happy New Year, Cheers! Jan

  • This was our first airbnb experience & it was perfect. The main reason to choose this place was the 5 blocks away from my family where we were celebrating Christmas. Everything was easy, clean and nicely organized. Loved sitting in the front yard watching the chickens. The bed was very comfortable. The size of the rooms were perfect for a 4 night stay. Appreciated the security lighting that went on when we walked through the gate.
Although this didn't make any real difference, since I have never lived in a big city, it was a small (VERY small) inconvenience to have to re-park the car due to street cleaning.

  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the cottage in the little house on the urban prairie. What a knock out job Ginger and Lewis have done to create a welcoming, artistic, highly functional, creative, tranquil, beautiful, sustainable, - did I mention awesome? Well I could go on. It's fabulous. You just have to see for yourself. I especially appreciated how thoughtful our hosts were in sharing local info, and in creating a little home away from home. They didn't miss a thing! We completely enjoyed the space, the ability to sit outside, and the chickens were great too. Ginger is absolutely lovely. Easy going. Communicative. Interesting- a true artist; who I enjoyed talking with. We stayed four days and it was hard to leave. By the way the location is PERFECT! Close to everything. We liked walking around and I was surprised to see how much we did walk to - eateries, the Actual cafe- one of a few we enjoyed, yoga, vibrant neighborhoods- all varieties of shops and things to do. The Berkeley bowl is a super stop for groceries. A car is helpful to see everything that Oakland has to offer but you must know that the Bart is right there! Oakland is a blossoming place filled with love and adventure. I am so glad we chose to spend our Oakland stay at Ginger and Lewis's. 5 stars all the way!

About
Can I just say we love Oakland? Many of our guests come here as a base camp for exploring San Francisco, but Oakland is HOT. It's in the middle of a rapid transformation and the air is just crackling with energy. In all our travels, we've discovered that it's easy to visit a place, but it's hard to visit a time. If you want to experience a city that's alive, where Something Is Happening, where the glory days are here and now -- then Oakland is where you want to be. -- We (Lewis and Ginger) are two UC Berkeley alums and former co-opers. We're also the creators of the Puking Kitty Saucy Boat -- it's hideously delightful. Lewis plays with computers and music, Ginger plays with glass and design. We love coffee, brew beer, throw BBQs and religiously attend the East Bay Bike Party. A few years back, we bought a fixer-upper and have been terraforming it here and there as the budget allows. As more and more friends and family started staying the night, we realized we love playing host. So we've decided to open up the place, give Airbnb a try, and play innkeep to folks passing through. Together we've traveled to Norway, Peru, Nicaragua, Jalisco Mexico, New York, New Orleans, Boise ID, Madison WI, Denver CO, Salt Lake City, Tucson AZ, Chicago IL, all up and down the US Pacific Coast, Argentina, Philippines, and Bali. P.S. My parents have a Philippines beach resort on Airbnb. Check it out: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/539038
