About This Listing
This two-bedroom cottage is in the backyard of the home where we have lived for more than 10 years. It's a cozy, comfortable space nestled among vines and fruit trees—a little oasis in the heart of the city, the perfect base for exploring.
The cottage is set about 100 feet back from the main house, behind a cluster of fruit trees and redwoods.
Beautiful and peaceful two-bedroom furnished garden cottage located in the Toler Heights neighborhood in Oakland, minutes from the Oakland Zoo near the junction of Hwy 580 and Golf Links Road. Free wifi and DirectTV. This is not one of those hotel-style Airbnbs—we try to provide a comfortable, affordable alternative in an area that has become out of reach even for many visitors, and we hope you'll reciprocate by treating it well and leaving it as you found it.
This is an historic working-class neighborhood with Works Progress Administration stamps still on the sidewalks. The cottage is behind the main home, in a garden filled with roses and fruit trees. Granite countertops, tile floors in kitchen and baths, carpet in living room and bedrooms; the bed in the main bedroom is queen size and there's also a twin bed in the small second bedroom (which we are now using to store our personal items, but can certainly be used to sleep in.)
It is most convenient to stay here if you have a car—to access the BART system, it's a quick 10-minute drive to the next station. There is also a bus connection to an express bus to San Francisco that runs during commute hours.
We encourage you to explore Oakland and the East Bay; for one thing, we have far better weather than SF! Temps are in the 70s during the day and it's is sunny EVERY SINGLE DAY from May to November. There are wonderful hiking trails in Redwood Regional Park and Anthony Chabot Regional Park, and Crown Memorial Beach in Alameda is the best place to dip your toes into the Bay.
We may consider small pets on an ad-hoc basis.
We only host when the space is not being used by family, so please don't inquire about dates beyond what is shown on the calendar. Thanks!
This is a garden house in the back yard of our own house, so we ask you to be considerate of our family and the neighbors. We're not charging a cleaning fee, so as to keep it affordable, so please leave the place as you found it. Looking forward to hosting you!
Everything about the place was great. Lots of kitchen space, lots of food stocked (even though I didn't grub on any of it), felt like I was house sitting. I felt like the neighborhood might be sketchy after dark though, but maybe that's an Oakland thing. It was still great though. Plus they have a portable fan if you need that background white noise like I do.
Monika's cottage was just the place to stay while we were visiting friends and family in the SF Bay area. We had looked for days for a hotel and they all seemed to be either overpriced or really sketch or, more often than not, both. The neighborhood was safe, the cottage was cozy, and the location was great for getting over to the peninsula, up to the headlands, and down to highway one for a scenic drive. The amenities were great, and the price was right. We never met Monika, but she was very friendly and always quick to respond to questions and communications via email. It made for a great visit to SF!
Monika was very welcoming and the backyard setting was lovely. The apartment is portrayed accurately in the photos -- a simple bachelor pad of sorts that is obviously lived in. But it suited our needs perfectly since we were really just sleeping there (comfortable bed, yay), and the value allowed us to stay six days without feeling financially pinched, which was important to us.
My small family and I enjoyed our stay at Monika's cottage. Monika was very responsive to my questions prior and during our stay. I always felt that Monika was accessible if I needed something or had additional questions. The cottage is as described and is very functional. Given that the cottage is situated off the road behind the main house, it is quiet and secluded. Given the price of a night's stay, I felt that staying at the cottage was a great value. Thanks Monika!
I stayed at Monika's Oakland cottage for 1 month. It was a very lovely stay! The cottage is peaceful, set among abundant fruit trees, and a great space to have to yourself. It had all the amenities you need: pots, pans, spices, iron, silverware, hangers, etc. There are 2 fans in the cottage, and the breeze from the windows is great. The living room is large enough for a yoga session or small workout.
My experience with Monika was excellent. If I had any issue with anything, Monika quickly responded and was a very kind and thoughtful host. Monika's description of the cottage is very accurate. I agree with her posting that this is a neighborhood best traveled with a car. This cottage was priced well, and was a lovely stay for my month in Oakland. Enjoy your stay!
Monika's cottage is as pretty and comfortable as the pictures convey. I picked fruit from the trees every day! The neighborhood was very quiet and I felt completely safe and private in the cottage. The cottage felt like "home," no a/c needed - the breeze from the open windows was cool enough. The DirectTV was great - got a chance to watch World Cup!! If you're on the internet a lot (like I am), you may want to bring a mobile WiFi. The internet from the house only reaches to an area near the front door. There is an ethernet cable (also near the front door) which does work but we'd have liked to enjoy WiFi laying in the (very comfortable) beds in the bedroom. Other than the internet, I had an enjoyable stay. I intend to return next summer :)
