Garden view

Soak up the view during your stay.
We offer an elegant, cozy, private guest room with private ensuite bathroom, it's own private entrance and private arbored deck. The carrera marble bath tiles are heated for winters, and the deck and garden have seating areas for summer. Like a little hotel room, this queen-bed suite is ideal for 1 or 2 who would like an entirely separate space, but don't need a full kitchen. The room features microwave, mini-fridge, teakettle & basic flatware - ideal for simple breakfasts or reheated leftovers.

The space
This suite is unique in that it is an entirely separate, hotel-room-like space designed for your privacy and independence. The suite is like a little hotel room attached to the back of our house and off of our Southern-facing garden - neither we nor you have access into each other's space during your stay. You enter and leave through your own entrance off of your own arbored deck with cafe table and chairs. This suite is perfect for travelers who, not needing a full kitchen or shared living space, prefer a private and well-appointed bedroom and bathroom to call their own during their stay, with a private entrance and deck that allow for independent check in and check out and all of the amenities that you would expect in a higher-end hotel room, including snacks and refreshments, tea and instant coffee, a microwave, mini-fridge, hair dryer, iron and ironing board, fresh towels and bedding and thoughtful, simple furnishings. The room and deck face south and east, with a lot of natural light and air. While some travelers love the unexpected interactions they discover with shared rooms in shared houses, our guest suite offers a bedroom and bathroom accommodation that is simpler than an entire apartment, but with all of the advantages of a totally private space for those that prefer privacy and independence.

Guest access
Guests enter and leave via the stone path along the shade-garden on the Eastern side of the home. Guests are welcome to the Southern garden's river-stone shared seating area (pictured in the listing - we sometimes enjoy this area as well, particularly in the summer), the private arbored deck (pictured in the listing), and their private bedroom and bathroom. For guests staying longer than a week, we can arrange for access to our basement laundry area, upon request.

Other things to note
No pets. We charge a $200 cleaning fee for any undisclosed pets on property.

We live on property, and our living space adjoins your space along a wall and part of the ceiling. We are typically a very quiet household, in a very quiet neighborhood, and the guest suite has been specifically sound-isolated from our space in a number of ways. However, we do live on the other side of the wall from you, and we make breakfast before work and have occasional dinner parties, so you can expect that you may hear these muffled sounds through the wall and sound-insulated doors as you might hear from a neighboring apartment in a sturdily built apartment building. You can expect near total silence between 11pm and 7am, and you can expect overall quiet a bit beyond these hours, from 10pm to 9am. Most guests remark at the quietness of the guest suite; however, we do live here, so total silence is not assured 24 hours a day. Generally, you can always text us if you find anything a disturbance; we prioritize your comfort and happiness absolutely.

Neighborhood highlights

Food in our immediate walkable neighborhood is insanely awesome:

#1: Ps & Qs Market: Go for lunch or dinner any day, or brunch on the weekends; go early in your stay, because you'll want to return for more. This is a hipster bodega, with a deli case and full kitchen, like a Vermont country store. It's a hit through Portland, and people travel to our neighborhood just to eat there. 5 blocks away.

#2: Woodlawn Cafe and Bakery: Super baristas and pastries. Also serving artisanal breakfast and lunch plates until about 5 or 6pm. 3 blocks away.

#3: Breakside Brewery: This might be number 1 if you're a beer fan, as it is a famous regional brewery with decent brewpub cuisine. 3 blocks away.

#4: Tamale Boy: Awesome and unique Mexican food, specializing in tamales, but with a broad menu. 8 blocks away, and adjoined by a decent gelato place and a funky meed bar.

#5: Firehouse Restaurant: Upscale Italian restaurant featuring wood-fired pizza and higher-end Italian cuisine. Might need a reservation, but sometimes walk-ins work. 3 blocks away.

#6: The Public House: A unique non-profit brew-pub where your profits are donated to the local charity of your choice. The food is really good overall. 4 blocks away.

#7: Good Neighbor Pizza: Basic pizza by the slice and a bar, good for a meal on a dime, or late night (until 2am). 4 blocks away.

#8: Woodlawn Farmers' Market: Every Saturday from 10am-2pm, May 21 - October 29. A handful of really fun food vendors with prepared meals that are surprisingly awesome. 3 blocks away.

#9: Gram Central Station: Weed is recreationally legal in Oregon; buy a joint, and tell your friends back home about it. Just don't smoke it in your room, of course! :) 7 blocks away.

#10: Hat Yai: Radically amazing Thai street food, pretty famous here in town. 13 blocks away.

#11: Padna's BBQ: Seriously legit Texas-style BBQ, pretty famous here in town. 13 blocks away.

#12: Prospect Bottle Shop: Curated beer, wine and cider to go, plus a little bar with small plates for tastings. 13 blocks away.

Additionally, Safeway, Walgreens, Starbucks and Popeye's Louisiana Kitchen are all 9 blocks away, if you're needing to feel that big-box love and restock.

We're also a short walk, bike, bus or drive from Alberta Arts District or Mississippi District, but really, the food around our own neighborhood is NICE. People who live throughout North/Northeast Portland come to our neighborhood all the time for food and drink. Alberta Arts district has great boutiques and art galleries (and the food options there are awesome too - our favorites are Boxer Ramen, Bollywood Theater (Indian street food), Salt 'n Straw Ice Cream, Random Order Pie House, Stella Tacos, Barista or Cafe Vita for coffee, Helzer's for Brunch, Tasty 'n Son's for lunch or dinner, Por Que No? for Mexican lunch/dinner/brunch... there are literally too many places to mention).
