The city of Imperia is born from the merger of two pre-existing towns, Oneglia and Porto Maurizio, and associated territories, geographically and historically distinct. Oneglia, levante, represents the most extensive and important of the city extends into short alluvial plain on the left side of the mouth of the River Impero, gathering around piazza Dante, where there are some of the main modern roads in the city. Was historically the industrial centre of the city, linked mainly to the production of olive oil and pasta. Commercial vocation more than Porto Maurizio and Oneglia Center is characterised by a Piedmontese style architecture (it's obvious inspiration to via Roma and piazza San Carlo in Turin), legacy of the time when it was part of the territories of Savoy. Porto Maurizio, in the West of the Empire (which gives name to the city), is picked up on a promontory jutting out into the sea on the left side of the mouth of the River Caramagna and expands on the selvedge coast; It has a predominantly residential and touristic vocation. Is tangled and picturesque, full of caruggi (alleys), small creuze (lanes) and valuable buildings.
The cultivation of the olive tree, introduced around the 12th century, marked profoundly the story of Imperia, as well as, centuries later, they did the flowers and tourism. Olive groves cultivated on terraced hills (called in the local dialect groups) with the characteristic dry stone walls are the dominant component of the landscape.
