Three bedroom house tucked away in the woods and yet just a short walk to the rocky shores of downeast Maine. Enjoy the peaceful Maine seaside community of Hancock Point or drive a short distance to explore Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor.

The space
The house is a quiet spot, tucked in the woods off of the main road that stretches the length of Hancock Point. Walk or drive to the pier for kayaking, swimming (it's cold!) or meandering past beautiful summer cottages.

Guest access
Guests will have the house to themselves: three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a full kitchen, living room/dining room, laundry room, screened porch, deck, grassy yard.

Other things to note
You can rent bikes in Ellsworth or Bar Harbor for biking around Hancock Point or Acadia. A local kayak guide offers trips from Hancock Point and there are lots of kayak tours and outfitters on Mount Desert Island. Hikes, walks, and swims are abundant. Check out Acadia National Park's website for information on trails, carriage roads and programming.

Location

Hancock, Maine, United States

Hancock Point sits just across Frenchman Bay from Mount Desert Island, home of Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. The views of Mount Desert Island from Hancock Point are gorgeous. There is a year-round community on Hancock Point that swells in the summertime as folks return to summer homes that have been in their families for generations. The small Hancock Point Library opens for the summer months, as do the village clay tennis courts (fees apply) and the Hancock Point Chapel. Crocker House Restaurant and Inn sits near the end of Hancock Point and operates nine months of the year; there are other restaurants within a ten minute drive of the house. There is a lovely piece about Hancock Point in The New York Times. http://www.nytimes.com/2002/07/12/travel/havens-in-summer-you-can-go-home-again.html

Ellsworth is the nearest city (a city by Maine's standards; it feels more like a small town if you're coming from a place like Boston or Chicago) with two large supermarkets, a natural food store, live performance venue, an LL Bean outlet, and other commerce and culinary adventures. While a swim across the bay to Mount Desert Island is just two miles, it's a 25 mile drive to the entrance of MDI's Acadia National Park and a 28 mile drive to Bar Harbor. You can also explore the Schoodic Peninsula, a section of Acadia National Park that rests on the mainland near Winter Harbor, Maine. Schoodic is a 25 mile drive from Hancock. In essence, Hancock Point is the halfway point between Mount Desert Island's section of Acadia National Park and the Schoodic Peninsula's section of Acadia National Park.

We lived in cities (DC and Philadelphia) until the age of 30, when we moved to Maine to catch our collective breath and start a family. David's an artist and Sarah's recently moved from higher education administration to communications. We're parents to two boys, damn fine cooks and one of us is a very slow distance runner while the other is soccer-obsessed.

During your stay
The owners of the home have asked their next door neighbors, Sarah and David to manage the rental of their home. This includes managing pre-arrival communications and answering questions during guests' stay. Sarah and David work full-time and have younger children so they're pretty busy. They're available to answer questions but definitely won't be hovering and invading the peace and quiet of your vacation.
