Cosy Chalet with Pool and Beaches

House - Entire home/apt · Ballyrisode, County Cork, Ireland

The Space

Who likes traveling knows the problem.

Hotels can be quite expensive.
One has to spend in the hotel for food and drinks.

B&B's are sometimes offering small rooms with none or minimal cooking-facilities. You will miss your own private living-room.

Holiday-houses are often only on a weekly base to get. They are sometimes too big. You can land "in the middle of nowhere" and with no reception.

With our ambitious and new concept
we try to make things a little bit better for you.

Our accommodation is "All Inclusive"!

Only the use of the washing machine (incl. washing-powder) and the tumble-dryer costs € 5 extra each.

We speak English, German, Russian and some French.

You'd like to cook a lobster or you intend to smoke your self-caught Mackerel or Pollock, but you don't know how to make it. Please call us.
How to find the cockles and mussels at the beach
and how to make the legendary "Spaghetti Vongole".

There would be so much to tell.

You'll find "The Cosy Chalet" on our own 60.000m2 park, forest and lawns.

Save Sandy Beaches 500m from our gate.
You walk just across the road and you are on our private wood-lane to the sandy-beaches.

The Cosy Chalet was 100 years ago may be a shelter for shepherds and their sheep.
We had to demolish the walls and built it new.
The Cosy Chalet is now a mix of old stone-walls and a massive oak-frame coming from England.

Many interiors and paintings are true and period.

It is a "One-In-All-Solution" on 2 levels.
The Cosy Chalet offers 2 beds (80x200) in the attic, reachable with a stair/ladder.
The attic has only a max. height of 1,50m.
One cannot stand upright!
There is a little "Velux" with may be the best sea-views.

Because of the limited heights and the way to go up,
we can recommend these beds only for younger people!

All others find a sofa-bed on the ground-floor-level (120x185).

There is a full size kitchen (that means absolutely everything you need, will be there.) of course with a full-size dishwasher and a dining-table.

Bathroom with shower, sink and toilet.

Sufficient tea-towels, bath-towels, even those for the pool will
be there.

Free Sat-TV (some hundred channels in many languages), DVD, CD, WiFi.

The Cosy Chalet is not like the Romantic Hideway built to
Passive-House-Standards.
But it is very well insulated and is getting some heat from the "Passive House" into his underfloor-system via an "Ultra-Thermal-Hose".

Please understand, that you may have to run a little fire to make the Chalet cosy.
You will get all logs for free.
All logs are homegrown and perfectly seasoned.
The good thing is, you heat with a long lasting positive effect to the environment.

Your "South-Terrace" is built like an old Roman Road.
There you will find chairs and a coffee-table.
A second, westerly terrace, surrounded by Rhododendrons will provide you with a simple dining-table and benches.

From there you have direct access to the swim-pond (water is like swimming in a river) and the decking with fantastic views over the Carbery Islands, Castles and Fastnet Rock.

The Cosy Chalet has 4 sleeping options and this is may be ok for one night or two.
But to get a really cosy feeling we recommend it only for two people.

And please no children who are not good swimmers. Pool!

You come with your own bike? That is a good idea.
We can pick you, your bikes and the luggage
at Cork or Kerry Airport.
Please ask for the price.
Or come with the bus and rent a bike here.

  • After staying the last week of January 2014 at this wonderful cottage in Ballyrisode it was difficult to leave. Even before arriving my email and phone contacts with Hannes were helpful and welcoming. It could not have been a better experience.

While there is a bus from Cork to the cottage, you will most definitely need a car to fully experience this bit of heaven on earth. The nearby towns of Schull, Ballydehob, Goleen and Crookhaven are all worth a stroll up and down their main streets, and you can't end your stay without a visit to Mizen Head, Ireland's "Land's End." Also very worth the 30 minute drive is Lough Hyne, a unique inland salt water lake with a rich history of human presence dating back to the Neolithic age and earlier. Hannes gladly provides maps, directions and a good deal of very helpful information about the area and things to see and do.

Hannes' directions to the cottage are spot-on, however coming from Cork city I simply used (website hidden) Maps/Directions to Ballyrisode. This will get you to the "T" intersection in Hannes' directions where R591 meets R592 (which goes east to Schull). Turn right to continue west on R591 toward Goleen. After 2 Km you will pass the "OSKA" store, then another 500M to the stone entrance on the right side of the road.

The cottage is exactly as described. It sits about halfway up a hill overlooking the sea in two directions. It will very comfortably accommodate 2 people, but there is room enough for 4 or even a small family. The loft bedroom which sleeps two is quite cozy. The cottage is well appointed with everything you will need for your stay including a well-outfitted kitchen, lots of power outlets for your digital gear, towels, blankets, a wonderful wood-stove for which Hannes generously provides an ample supply of logs, a picnic table. and of course the unique natural swimming pool beautifully created by Hannes himself. If you're lucky enough to be there on a clear night, the sky is filled with thousands of stars.

Even without Hannes' graciousness the Ballyrisode cottage is a wonderful stay and a great value. However his friendly, warm and helpful (yet unobtrusive) manner adds a whole additional level of satisfaction to the experience. Given its beautiful location, the comfort of the structure, the gorgeous property and its proximity to many stunning scenic views, Hannes' cottage will surely provide you with a wonderful experience of rural Ireland.

  • We had a fantastic stay at the chalet. It was perfectly situated for exploring the beaches, mountains and local town, and is in a really beautiful spot. The chalet was very cosy and comfortable indeed, with everything you'd need - the log fire was the perfect antidote to the wild weather outside! Hannes was extremely welcoming and helpful, the dog and cats were very friendly, and we'd really love to return for another relaxing stay!

  • Hannes was very friendly and helpful. We just wanted a quiet weekend and that is what we got. The Chalet was nice and cozy. The dog was friendly and playful. We would stay there again.

  • This was the last stay in our vacation, and the most delightful! Hannes is so gracious and his cosy chalet is perfect! The little house is so beautifully appointed, with everything you could need and with such an eye for detail. The grounds are peaceful and serene. The location is right in the middle of the wildest, lushest, most glorious part of this fabulous country. We look forward to our return, and to see Hannes again.

  • This cozy chalet is quiet, serene; the epitome of tranquil; there was even the most perfectly scenic rainbow framing the well-manicured garden one evening during my stay. The kitchen is very usable, the living area is generous for one person and probably perfect for a couple. The ladder to the loft is not for the faint of heart, but I managed quite well (even after nights out with local friends and family and the mornings after) and I was very comfortable. The shower heating is easily adjustable, as is the heating in the cottage in general. The house's dog is as friendly and attentive as any I've ever met and accompanied me on my daily walks; she is a popular animal and was greeted by name by locals far and wide. Hannes is a lovely host; I could not imagine better. He was un-obsequiously attentive, very friendly, completely available when needed in such an easy way that it is impossible to not feel right at home - if only my own home were so charming and comfortable!

  • Lovely property in rural West Cork. Ideally located for day trips out - Hannes is full of great recommendations!

Thank you for a lovely time in West Cork.

  • We stayed with Hannes for 3 nights, it was amazing just the perfect break that we needed. The chalet was beautiful and had everything that we could possibly have needed. We lit the fire every night as it was very cosy and romantic.
There was a lovely sandy beach at the other side of the forest in front of Hannes' property. I would recommend having your own transport either a bike or car as you will see more of the amazing coastline and more beautiful beaches and towns. I would recommend taking a trip down to the beautiful beach in Crookhaven! The local restaurants (Schull and Goleen) had a vast selection of fresh seafood and a good selection for those (like me) who don't eat seafood. Perfect place to relax and recharge.
One comment rather than criticism is that we were not aware that there would not be a double bed in the chalet, we had thought there might be although there was none in the pictures however the sofa bed was perfectly comfortable and we also had the option of 2 single beds in the roof-space. No complaints, Hannes was very warm, welcoming and fantastic at pointing out things to see and do. We felt very at home. We will definitely be back when we need another relaxing break.

  • We had a fabulous stay with Hannes in the Chalet. the Chalet has everything we possibly need. we even get to use the fire place. it is very clean and well maintained. Hannes is a wonderful host. he is warm, friendly and very generous. he lent us bikes and knowing that we don't have a car, checked on us whenever he is going to town. Ester, the golden retriever, is a beautiful bonus! she is as fabulous as Hannes. accompany/guide us to the beach and walks and greet us with the sweetest smile every morning and evening when we return. the place is perfect for a Romantic get away. thanks Hannes. a big hug!!

  • Hi All

We cannot recommend the experience enough! We were looking for a quite but active week away in West Cork and the combination of the location, the scenic setting, the cottage, the facilities, the hosts (Hannes and Elena) and their crowd of friendly pets (i.e. Sophie and Murphy the Cats, Easter the Dog) combined to make our holiday very memorable.

All I can say is thanks to Hannes and his family for being so friendly and helpful in every way and we look forward to seeing you all again in the future.

    All the best

    Eoin and Karolina

  • We stayed there few weeks ago for a weekend, the cosy chalet is actually very cosy :) and has everything you need for cooking and even a dishwasher. Hannes is very helpful and friendly and at the same time gives you your own space. I would recommend this place for a quiet couple getaway or a small group of friends. We will definitely come back soon!!
