  • Staying at this house was absolutly great! Adina welcomed us the day we arrived & explained us everything in the house and recommended us places to go near by (supermarket/restaurants/laundry etc.). It was always easy to get in touch with her if we had any questions. We were 5 people staying there and the appartment was big enough to find some space. Of course its very close sleeping in 4 in one room but still. The living room and kitchen area is big enough to feel space. The heating system is a bit tricky. It has its own head, turning on and off by itself. But most of the time it had a good timing. :-)
The athmosphere of the neighborhood is really nice and waking up on a sunday from the gospel choir next door completed the authentic NYC feeling! We would definitely come back again!

  • Brian and Adina is a great host and their apartment is awesome. My family and I spent our first NYC winter experience in Brian’s apartment. It is perfect: exactly like the photos, with a fantastic background, lots of space, very clean, and well appointed. We never got to meet Brian or Adina; however, they made all necessary arrangements to assure we were able to get into the apartment. They also communicated exceptionally well prior to our arrival, kept in touch throughout our stay, and were immediately responsive to our questions. He even offered YOGA lesson for us and left extremely thorough notes and suggestions about the neighborhood and surrounding areas of Brooklyn. The apartment has all the amenities, including a very comfortable bed, cute remodeled bathroom, great kitchen and living room, TV, Wi-Fi. It's also very well located near multiple subway stops and shops. In short, it's a great place to stay. I highly recommend it.

  • We just came back to France and just to word to say that the place was really great and perfect to welcome easily 6 people in. Brian is a super host, everything was cool! Big thank you!

  • I've stayed at the sterling place with my family for three days. First of all I have to mention the great care we received from adina and her team. I got emails in advance, as soon as I mentioned a question I got a call from a person in charge, when we arrived there somebody was there to let us in. Also the team is ( with us it was Brian and Jessica) interested in helping you out in all times including long talks and offering help at any time. I've done airbnb and (website hidden) for a few times but it has never been that well organized and pleasant. Would recommend it to anyone and do it again with adina's residences. Also about the appartment it was clean, had everything one needs and has a beautiful garden. Was a pleasure to stay there! Thank you

  • Having lived in NYC years ago, I should have been more prepared, but I must admit to being surprised when I arrived at the house. I have to say Adina, and her friends, were great hosts. The place was clean, they were very attentive to asking after our needs, etc.

However, the place seemed much bigger and nicer in the pictures, and I was truly surprised (and disappointed) at how dinghy the overall house and neighborhood were. You can tell they have tried their best to keep it neat, and clean, and the bathroom has had a beautiful renovation. But, its an old, grimy building, in a not very nice, and fairly gritty area.

The neighborhood wasn't not safe (we didn't get mugged!) but it certainly felt like we could have been, and we were all nervous with the people loitering about, the hoodlums playing music at all hours, and the obvious drug users in front of the deli's and check cashing type places. It is a neighborhood in transition - and will likely be all hipster's in a few years. But for now, its a weird mix of new juice places, next to old dollar stores and barber shops. Not unlike the apartment - and old, run down brownstone, that they've obviously put work into making it as nice as possible as well.

    Response from Adina:

Nathan, I feel terribly that you and your team were uncomfortable at this property. If I had received this feedback up front I would have happily transferred you to another property. We always ask for feedback within the first 24 hours so we can address any issues, and we go to great lengths to make sure we deliver on that promise.

The photos were taken by an airbnb photographer, and we have never before been told that they are deceptive. Brooklyn brownstones are not new. Unless specifically stated that they are newly renovated (which this listing does not claim, except for the bathroom!) that's what you can expect. And we provide a floorplan in the listing so you know exactly what to expect in terms of the space. We put a constant love and care into maintaining and upgrading this property, as indicated by previous reviews.

As for the neighborhood, we have never had any safety issues whatsoever. As described, the neighborhood is in a process of transitioning from a traditional Caribbean/African-American community (still the majority of the population) to a popular home for Brooklyn 'hipsters.' We hope that guests will not jump to conclusions about safety based on those demographics.

Again, I'm extremely sorry that you had such a bad experience and that we did not have the opportunity to respond in a timely manner.

    Best of luck,
    Adina

  • Had a very enjoyable 6 weeks in Sterling Place. Adina was there to meet and greet and was a pleasure to deal with from the first communication. She provided the most delicious bread and even some fruit salad just made! Apart from thinking I'd locked myself out in the first day ( I hadn't!) I didn't need to bother her or her team throughout the stay as everything was clear in the instructions and everything I needed was there. I had a couple of friends to stay during the period....the sofa bed was apparently very comfortable though the 2nd bedroom is only screened off. The kitchen is well equipped and the smallish bathroom very clean and there was shampoo, conditioner and shower gel there for us to use. The main bedroom is very large and has plenty of hanging space. The bonus of having a garden is obvious and it made all the difference being able to access the outdoors! I was working at BAM, a 10 min subway ride or 40 min walk away and am so pleased I chose to stay in Brooklyn rather than Manhattan. There are plenty of good supermarkets close by as well as some great bars and restaurants, many of which are recommended by Adina. Midtown Manhattan is only half an hour on the subway away which makes this apartment a real choice even if working in town. I would definitely stay in this apartment again and recommend it to anyone wanting to be a bit away from the noise, crowds, traffic and hustle of Manhattan!

  • Our family vacation in New York was a big success thanks to Adina and Brian. They were incredibly accommodating and always very responsible as hosts. We feel that a vacation can be very enjoyable with 3 key elements/requirements. Spacious accommodation, a wonderful neighbor environment, and great hosts and people. Adina's place just meet all of them. We would like to stay at Adina's again! Thank you very much for your hospitality.

About
I’ve been living in Brooklyn since August, 2001, when I first moved to Park Slope. After a year of exile in Manhattan, where I longed for the peacefulness, beauty and community of Brooklyn, I spent 7 years in the Prospect/Lefferts neighborhood until last year, when I moved to Bed-Stuy, where I currently live with my beautiful family. I’m an active member of the local Brooklyn community and eager to share my knowledge and passion about the area with visitors. When I’m not hosting guests, I’m working as a musician and bandleader, teaching yoga at Brooklyn Yoga School, and spending time with my fiancée and baby daughter, Bella. I’m fluent in Spanish and Mandarin, speak French and can make you laugh in any language. My biz partner Adina is usually the one managing this account and coordinating logistics, so you'll probably be hearing from her up til check in, but I'll be taking care of you from there! This property was previously listed under Adina's account so reviews can be found here: airbnb.com/users/reviews_new/113919 Here are the last few: I've stayed at the sterling place with my family for three days.
