If you’ve been dreaming of rewilding yourself during lockdown. If you want to swing axes, build fires, and create your own Moon Bathing experience, this is the Conker for you.
With the Moon Conker the central feature is the Moon Bathing in two hot and cold Scandi-style baths filled by hand pump with water from the nearby stream and heated in a kettle.
Run back to your comfy bed to stretch out in front of the fire, gazing at the starry night skies through the observatory portholes above you.

The space
Owner Anjana says:
“We try to learn from each project we do and try to adapt what we are doing to fit the landscape so every new build is different to the one which has come before and the whole site has come about quite organically. The challenge is to try to impact the landscape as little as possible whilst still making a design statement. With the Moon Conker the central feature is the harnessing of natural energies, where we seek to harness the energy of the river and our guests who come to visit.

I don’t know if it is the team work involved in heating the water, the druids, negative ions or plain Celtic magic but the feeling of heating the ghillie kettle and drawing a bath from the pure mountain water cannot be easily equalled. And breathe…

For dining, we have built the Pentagon hexagonal pod, which features a gas stove - but you are also welcome to use the fire pit to cook on if you like! It's covered, so if the weather isn't as friendly as one might wish, it's a great option.

The Moon Conker has good solar lighting for reading but if you do want to stay in touch with the outside world, (please tag us @chilldernessescapes if you can’t resist - we love to see you having fun); at this pod you’ll have to bring your own battery chargers .

Inside both Conkers, you will find decent quality mattresses and a super-king bed which transforms into a modular sitting room during the day. The River serves as a cooler at the Moon Conker. We supply basic kitchen seasoning, tea and coffee and of course, marshmallows for toasting over an open fire.

We provide:

🛏️ Bed Linen (under the hexagonal table)
🚿 Towels
🍽️ Cutlery, Crockery and mugs
🌳 Wood for the stove and the fire pit (stored near the car park)
⛽ Gas for the shower and cooker
🍳 Outdoor, covered kitchen and dining area, the Pentagon
🚿Outdoor shower
🚽 Compost loo (along with great views and loo roll) - just over the river
🛀 2 x outdoor bath (wood fired - you heat)
🍕 Pizza oven (with flour, yeast and salt)
🎁 Small welcome pack with milk, bread, welsh cakes and marshmallows when available)

You should bring:

Your pyjamas, food and wine, a shawl and a battery pack ( maybe a camera).
🔦 A head torch.
👗 Weather appropriate clothing
🥾 A good pair of walking boots - the walk down to the Conker can get slippy
🔭 A telescope or binoculars for stargazing
♟️ Creature comforts like games, books and throws and flip flops for shower

Guest access
Access to the Moon Conker is at the bottom of a steep slope, with the toilet facilities (in accordance with H&S regulations) a little distance away over the stream. Solar lighting is provided but we definitely recommend a good head torch as well as a hand one!

IMPORTANT: the area around the Moon Conker, especially at this time of year, can become very muddy, so please do bring appropriate footwear (wellies and walking boots) and clothing. When the temperatures are sub zero, the shower also has a tendency to burst - so we will remove it if temperatures drop - the baths will of course remain in place. If you are worried about the temperatures and the shower, you can always look at the sister pod, Earth Conker, whose shower only occasionally freeze - and is connected to mains electricity.

Other things to note
Comes with its very own private woodland and rolling hills to explore.

Head up on to the remote moors where you are rewarded with expansive vistas and actually rather decent 4G signal or stroll round the rugged estate and feed the wild pigs which are part of the Chillderness Rewilding project.

My work: Chillderness Retreats

Hello there! My name is Anjana, and along with my husband David, we design awesome escapes in beautiful locations. We built our first home - the Curved House in Clapham - which featured on Grand Designs back in 2004. We live here with our three children/design consultants who constantly inspire us with crazy ideas! As a family, we only build getaways that we're passionate about. We put a strong emphasis on upcycling, sustainability and integrating our ideas into the environment. Lawyers by trade, we swapped courtroom for courtyard and now we are always on the look for the next unique project. We're very excited to share our creations :)
