Seri was a great host. He lives very near the railway station, so before I arrived, he made sure to contact me and tell me to meet him there. He picked me up and walked me the short distance back to his place. His family was very gracious, and his mother cooked some fantastic meals for me. Seri was always there for conversation or to help, though he made sure to give me privacy when needed. I enjoyed interacting with his brother, mom, dad, and niece. Music is the centerpiece of the house, and I enjoyed hearing Seri and his niece Mamisha practicing at different times. I even was able to jump in on a mini-jam session. The room was perfect, with access straight to the outside world in case you come in late and don't want to go through the house. There is a bathroom adjacent to the room for toilet and sink usage. Like most places in Darjeeling, it's a squatty potty, but if you're heading this way, this shouldn't bother you. The one minor difficulty was the bathing situation: it involved 35-40 minutes of heating the water before using, which (if I had more concrete plans) could have made timing tricky. Also, it's not really a shower, but hot water in buckets that you use to bathe. Again, not western standard, but perfectly fine given that you're in the Himalayas.
I didn't come with an itinerary, and Seri and his brother helped me plan out my days to make sure I saw the essential sites. Seri even took me out shopping the day before I left to make sure I was getting good rates on tea, etc. I had to get something tailored the day before I left, and the tailor wasn't going to be finished until 6:30am the next day- Seri woke up with me to go back to the tailor to get it, and then made sure I had a ride back to the airport. All in all, his service was fantastic. If you're going to Darjeeling, you're going to want to stay with Seri and his family.
We had a wonderful stay Seri and his beautiful family. Our room was cosy with mountain views just outside. The house is full of character and it was lovely to be in a house which has been loved for generations. Seri's Mum cooked such delicious breakfasts and took care to make a different dish each meal. We loved hanging out with the very interesting, very interested Seri, and his walks took us to places we wouldn't have seen otherwise. Highly recommended!
We only spent two nights at Seri's but I couldn't imagine a better place to stay in Darjeeling! The whole family is incredibly kind and welcoming, Mom cooks amazing food (including garden veg as previously mentioned by another) and the location is fantastic. Seri and family make wonderful recommendations about the area and are great to exchange ideas and talk with. The room is very clean and comfortable. Highly recommended!
A really great location in walking distance of everything, with amazing views! Mum and dad were lovely and the home cooked food was incredible! Took us to parts of darjeeling we would not have seen otherwise, a really wonderful experience in a beautiful town!
YES! Good walks. Good talks. Great food. The best spot in Darjeeling, if you ask me. Seri and the gang are it.
