A 3rd floor loft with views! In the Detroit Zen Center residency. Loft overlooks our green roof, with full bath & kitchenette. An adjacent spacious bedroom w sitting room below loft for rent for larger groups. Includes home-made granola, & access to meditation, gardens, full kitchen, common areas, in an eclectic, walkable neighborhood in the center of Detroit - Hamtramck. Founded in 1990, your stay helps our Zen community continue to shine one corner of the world. Long term stays available.

The space
In addition to your private Loft Apartment, you can access other shared spaces: a living room with a woodstove, full dining room, tiled bathrooms, full kitchen, gardens & a private residency entrance.

Founded in 1990 by Abbot Hwalson Sunim, the Detroit Zen Center is a home for zen monks & students, a public meditation center, & a non-profit organization. Adjacent to the Zen Center is our historic, well-loved 5 bedroom home, connected via a green roofed corridor to the Zen Center Meditation Hall & Monastery (separate building). The Center spaces have a hand-built, rustic yet well-cared for feel.

Guests can rent either the private loft apartment, ensuite guest room (or both). The loft has a balcony overlooking a 2,200 square foot Green Roof on top of the meditation hall, with views of the roof & the City. The ensuite guest bedroom has a view of the green roof through its windows. We have radiant heat, high speed wifi, and a clean, organized environment.

Included in the guest stay is optional organic, vegan breakfast, as well as AM & PM meditations, while lunch is optional for an additional $10 per person.

In addition to the private space, guests may access a full kitchen & common areas on the main floor, shared by zen student residents.

We do have a cat, Damo. The Center has 2 green roofs, public gardens, & guests are welcome to join meditation or other daily activities. Stairs are a must (the loft apartment is on the 3rd floor; guest room is on the 2nd floor).

Founded in 1990, we aim to shine our one corner of the world. In addition to meditation resident students follow a plant based & sustainable lifestyle: we support local farmers, and try our best to reclaim, re-use, and incorporate sustainable practices.

Our green roofs, lower rain garden, and peace garden across the street are a reflection of our aim to create (and build awareness on the need for) public green space, green stormwater management practice (green roofs), and urban habitat for birds & bees.

Your stay with us helps us continue our work, 30 years and counting.

Other things to note

Neighborhood highlights

Our neighborhood is in the middle of bustling Hamtramck -- a 2.5 square mile city district in the epicenter of Detroit. Hamtramck is an enclaved city, home to 32 ethnic groups -- and a large population of artists, students, and first generation folks to the United States. The most walkable area of metro-Detroit, Hamtramck is very urban -- a dense & eclectic community with grocery stores, restaurants, cafes, bars, music, and galleries all around. No need for a car if you are going to stay in Hamtramck -- but if you plan to visit other parts of Detroit, a car is useful. Downtown Detroit is 5 miles away. We are next door to the North End, New Center & the historic Boston Edison District.

I live half the year at the Detroit Zen Center in Hamtramck (Detroit), the other half in the wilderness of the Upper Peninsula on Lake Superior. I cherish time, wilderness, meditation, friends, teachers & communing with the wonder of life. I have been a Zen Buddhist monk for 20 years. I trained and was ordained at my home temple Sudeoksa, in South Korea, and teach meditation.
