We loved staying at Suzanne's little Big Island paradise. The cottage is lovely. It's super clean and tidy and has everything you could need for your stay. It is tucked away in the jungle just far enough to get away from the masses of tourists, but close enough to explore much of what the Big Island has to offer. Suzanne has loads of knowledge on the area and provided loads of tips on where to adventure to. She also loves her gardening and took us on an impressive tour of the garden - so much fruit and superfoods! Overall a very excellent stay and we would definitely stay again if/when we are back on the Big Island! Thanks Suzanne :)
Our First Airbnb (and our first trip to Hawaii) and it was fabulous. Very quiet and private! The cutest cottage I will never forget. It was great having the internet in this jungle setting so we could stay connected when we needed to. The bed was super comfortable and the refrigerator has plenty of room. The nearby coast is beautiful with plenty of sites to visit. Suzanne was a great host. I loved stopping by to talk to her and getting to know her as well as for some tips on the area. Also, make sure you get the book Hawaii Revealed and read in advance. She also has a copy at the house. This gives you lesser known spots to go to all over the island. My favorite was Square Rock down the road. This side of the island I would say was one of the most beautiful along the coast. The waves splash high against the rocks and make some amazing photos. If you can get a four wheel drive for the island you wont regret it. You will need it for Champaign Pond. I was concerned about an out door shower but it was great. There is no one around. There are some great restaurants in Pahoa - Kaleo's , and a nice Thai. There is a shopping center down the road from the restaurant area for groceries. There is also Longs Drug store which has everything (sister store to CVS pharmacy). So if you want privacy, quiet and comfort in the jungle, you will love it!
I cannot give this woman enough praise! She was the most excellent host, and her getaway cottage is off the charts. I'll definitely be staying there again!
Everything was great. The cottage is very cute, surrounded by trees and flowers so lots of privacy. It's in a very beautiful and lush part of the island, not too far from Hilo and the volcano. Suzanne was very easy to communicate with and very helpful.
Suzanne's cottage was so quaint and peaceful. My boyfriend and I stayed there for a weekend after spending some time on the west coast of the island at a resort for a conference. The resort was nice but Suzanne's place was really the highlight of our trip. It was super clean and the space was beautiful. I wish we could have stayed there longer. A few nights we even came back early from exploring just to kick back and relax at the cottage. It was great for just listening to the birds and reading my book or snuggling up and watching some Netflix (great perk). The kitchen had everything we needed and we did some light cooking (tacos!). There was plenty of toiletries and all the towels we needed. We made friends with the geckos and made lots of great memories.
The place is a bit far from most things (~20 min into town. 1 hrish to Hilo and Volcano) but we enjoyed the drive. It can also get a bit hot but the fan provided was helpful for that. Wi-Fi worked great.
Oh, and we didn't actually meet Suzanne because she had already given us all we needed and we communicated perfectly through the site. That was OK with us. It was nice to have the privacy.
Thank you Elizabeth for the great review. I understand my guests enjoy their privacy and hopefully when and if you come back you will come over to my house across the street and say hi. Then I can direct you to the amazingly beautiful sites in this immediate area, also an understated tourist destination, a 12 mile coastal sunbelt on the rainy side of the island with mineral ponds, turtle ponds for swimming, hikes to new beaches formed by the lava flow and many more. Kalani Retreat Center is 1/4 mile down the road and an international gathering place to explore and enjoy this special coastal area. The island is literally a big island, mostly undeveloped and destinations are spread apart with a bit of a drive and stunning scenery.
Normally the trade winds keep a comfortable breeze coming thru the cottage, but just recently we had unusual and record high temperatures. To mitigate this in the future should it occur again I have ordered an extra large solar powered ceiling fan. Thanks again and hope to see you back!
Suzanne was very communicative prior to our coming and was very welcoming and informative upon our arrival. Her level of presence as a host was perfect in that she was available when needed but otherwise not hovering at all. This gave a great sense of privacy at the cottage. She lent us snorkeling gear, gave good advice about where to explore, and was overall very upbeat and friendly
The home is as lovely as described, very peaceful, and the host is wonderful. She provided us with lots of information and tips about the area. My husband and I had a great time relaxing at the cabin and exploring the area. I highly recommend!
About the Host, Suzanne
I've worked in the hospitality industry serving guests with aloha for the last 25 years. I also enjoy gardening and creating beautiful outdoor spaces. Some guests tell me the grounds look like a tropical botanical park. Hosting a vacation rental gives me the opportunity to combine my talents in creating rewarding and rich experiences for my guests and myself.
My objective in building the cottage was to create an ambience of old Hawaii, with a sense of timelessness for ultimate relaxation and peace.
