Close to the ocean and walking distance to Kehena black sand beach, this high-end authentic Balinese teak cottage is located at the end of a cul de sac. The grounds are landscaped with a wide variety of rare exotic fruit trees and flowers.
Constructed with teak, bamboo, marble and granite and sitting on its own lot, the building is very private and borders state virgin jungle. Queen size Temperpedic bed, kitchen with granite counters and breakfast bar, luxurious outdoor shower, extra deep marbled bathtub and hand carved marble pedestal sink, teak hardwood floor and flagstone patio with a sunrise view and excellent star gazing at night.
1/4 mile from Kalani Oceanside Retreat Center and close to many natural wonders: thermal hot ponds, snorkeling, surfing, boat launch, hiking, spelunking, beach with dolphins and whales, state, county and national parks, lava viewing and more!
Update: Cottage is now connected thru antenna to a new and very fast internet service.
Please note: Airbnb does not include the Hawaii state TAT and Excise taxes of 13.4% due upon arrival.
What an amazing place - very secluded and away from anything busy. The biggest highlight for me was the outdoor shower... Don't really get too many opportunities to do this and wanted to take advantage as much as possible.
Another thing, was how green this cottage is, completely off the grid and a small space (something I am fascinated with and want when I get older). Rainwater is caught and used (don't recommend drinking) and electricity is done through solar. At night, and after rainfall, I'd keep the kitchen light on and the bedroom/bathroom area lights off to keep the flys near those lights. There is also bug spray, which I found afterwards that allowed me to have a scratch-free sleep!
We went into town and bought a bunch of groceries at Islands Natural Pahoa Market & Deli - like a whole foods - to make breakfast and lunches, there is more than enough utensils and pots/pans to make food for two. There are also a few restaurants, bars and a tattoo place in town.
There is a beach that is down the road, however we ironically never actually made it to any beaches on our trip as we went hiking...A lot! Suzanne provides some body boards, flippers and beach chairs if you do go. We explored the volcano park which is roughly 1.5 hours away and the space observatory is near the hakalau national forest (need special permission to enter). If you are going anywhere off the actual roads and the dirt roads are even a little damp, I STRONGLY recommend getting a 4 wheel drive vehicle as our 2WD Chevy SUV barely made it up the observatory (13K+ feet above sea level) dirt road - july 4th weekend the jeeps were all sold out.
Make sure to check out the Hilo Farmers market! So much good food too and you support the locals! We will be back as there are a few other places I'd love to see (the green sand beach, which is another hike or you can pay a local to hitch a ride, and do some snorkeling in the tide pool areas to see the corals.
Glad to hear Robert enjoyed himself. I work hard to keep the cottage as bug free as possible, if he had communicated to me he was having any problem I would have immediately treated the cottage with organic repellents(orange peel extract) and offered (email hidden). I live across the street and let all new guests know that I am available for any help they may need for an optimal vacation experience.
Highly recommend this cottage/cabin for a beautiful, peaceful, romantic, happy stay in paradise! surpassed my expectations, the pictures don't even do it justice. So quiet, all you can heare is the birds and the ocean in the distance. You are surrounded 360 degrees by a beautiful Garden of Eden including all types of tropical flowers and fruit, very private, can't see neighbors (so feel comfortable using the outdoor shower au naturel!) Also Suzanne was SUPER helpful with directions and located very close by if we needed anything (which we didn't). Internet signal was excellent and the free Netflix movies on demand was a nice benefit too! It is an easy walk to Kehena beach to the south and to the Kalani retreat for yoga etc. to the north. The neighborhood is safe, sunny and friendly. And the cabin is so pretty with teak walls, ceiling and floors, it feels very elegant and special.
The cottage is absolutely beautiful and very cozy (and clean which not all of my airbnb accomodations were),I loved it!Especially the gorgeous outdoor shower facing the garden and the forest thats behind it.Suzanne is a great host.
I'll definitely be back!
We had a lovely couple of days staying at Suzanne's cottage. It's the perfect place if you are looking for somewhere off the beaten track as the area is quite remote but that was exactly what we wanted from the place. It was great to have somewhere nice and quiet to stay and be able to cook our own food. The area is very scenic and the thermal pools nearby were great to visit for an early morning swim, you will need a car though as it is a bit of drive to reach the shops etc.. Suzanne was a perfect host, very welcoming to us and her place was clean, comfortable with beautiful surroundings. If you are looking for a tranquil place to stay for a few days then we would definitely recommend here.
Good, Suzanne was very friendly. We loved the restaurant recommendations and tried out Paolo's (Delicious!). We came back from a hike in the middle of the night and there was no hot water, called Suzanne and she showed up right away to remedy the situation.
Suzanne's cottage is amazing! We spent 3 only nights...but definitely not enough to enjoy such paradise! The experience is remarkable and we will never forget it for sure! I will definitely recommend it to anyone travelling to Big Island! Thanks Suzanne! Hopefully we are able to come back some time soon! :)
We had such a lovely time at Suzanne's little cottage in the jungle! It was just perfect for the two of us. Loved the outdoor shower, the geckos, the ceiling mats, the comfy bed, the Pandora and Netflix, the coqui frogs and lovely birds and gardens. For us the seclusion and quiet is a plus - very relaxing and enjoyable! A big wind storm knocked down a big tree while we were gone one day. By the time we returned, the branches had been cleared from the path to the shower, and by the time we returned from our adventures the following day, it had all been cleaned up - it was as if little elves had come in and done the work while we were away, completely unaware.
It is beautiful and quiet. The only noise you hear are the birds. We will be back
The teak cottage is lovely in every way! It is perfect for two, but we had three...myself, my husband and daughter. Our daughter is 8 and slept on a folding futon on the floor and for her that was a total adventure. We loved staying here and hope to come back someday!
This was an incredibly fine experience. The Balinese cottage was well appointed, cozy, romantic, very cool. The birds sang and the bull frogs croaked. The drive along the coast to the warm springs was one of the best I've experienced in Hawaii. A really great location from which to explore the lava fields at Volcano national park. Suzanne was a gracious host, well...we had to seek her out or we wouldn't have met at all. She is a lovely person. I highly recommend the Balinese cottage. When you arrive you are sure to be stunned by the serenity of the grounds and the awesomely sweet cottage. Fantastic.
