About this listing
Looking for a clean apartment with privacy, immediate access to the beach, a beautiful garden to hang out, all basic facilities (ac, wc, wifi, kitchen), a pleasant 15min walk from city centre and a host with a smile and eager to help? Apt5 it is!
A very comfortable apartment. On the inside you will find a clean, well organised and really decent place to stay. A large kitchen room with fridge is available. In addition the apartment features a bathroom with shower, ac, tv, free wifi. The bedroom is equipped with two singe beds that could merge and make it a double bed and an extra single bed and it may host up to 3 guests.
Apartment number 5 is located on the street side of the building but from the inside there is direct access to the garden level where you may relax and enjoy further.
The feelings on having your breakfast in the garden watching the sun rise above the fortezza is a picture you will never forget.
The apartment is very clean, a perfect choice for your stay. In addition we do offer cleaning service every 2 or 3 days, free of charge!.
Mamangakis Apartments are about one kilometer away the city center but it's a beautiful walk or ride with your bicycle, taking advantage of the new bicycle route on the sidewalks of the town. Within a range of 100-150m you will find parking, the best restaurants in town (also right on the sea), souvlaki place, courier service and internet cafe for your breakfast and other needs.
There is a bus stop right outside of our apartments that takes you to the university and another bus stop across the street that takes you to the city center.
Mamangakis Apartments is a family business and we invest on customer satisfaction.
Feel free to contact us for more information you might need!
Apt5 has its own kitchen with fridge, its own WC with shower, a small balcony on street side. The garden is available for all our guests and you may feel free to enjoy your meal or reading a book at your convenience. From the garden you step right on the beach! You do not have to walk outside the building or cross busy streets. Even though Apt5 is an apartment with street view you get direct access to the garden and beach from within the building.
Interaction with Guests
As a host i am always willing to help and welcome my guests. Most of the times this is how it goes. But due to family affairs or business matters I am not always present at the apartments. However my mother who is living in the same building is also willing to help at all times. In addition airbnb messaging service is something that i follow almost 24hr so contacting me is easy. If you read reviews from my guests you will understand how much i value my guests' presence at my place.
Koubes is the name of our neighbourhood. It is the west side of the city centre. This place is blessed to have a beautiful small, almost private beach for it's residents. This area is also very popular for it's top of the line restaurants and lounge bars. There are actually not many but the two restaurants Almyra (next door) and PrimaPlora (150m down the road) are one of a kind! Maestros (close to PrimaPlora) is a lounge bar & restaurant, kind of club for the locals for a drink later in the afternoon or a little after midnight.
Across the street you may find a coffee place for croissants, coffees etc.
Going towards the city center you may find “Noulis” another coffee and snack place a highly recommended one. A little bit further (250m from our apartments) there is a small mini market for basic stuff (such as groceries, milk to toilet paper)
In case you need a big supermarket you may keep going towards the city center and right before you get in it you will see a big building on your right which is a Carefour Marinopouos s/m. Or you could go westwards from our apartments and uphill (about 700m) where you will find a Lidl s/m (better if you have a car). A bank ATM machine is available little before reaching city center.
Our location is a great value for you vacation. Not far from city centre but far enough to avoid crowds & traffic. You are right on the beach with jaw dropping sea view, very close to the city’s main bus terminal (just a 10min walk) and finally very close to the island’s main highway that gives you the opportunity to explore the rest of the island fast and easy enough avoiding local traffic.
The main bus terminal (aka KTEL) is only a 10min walk from our apartments. Taking a taxi from city centre to our apartments or vice versa is not more than 5€ - 7€. In addition the island's main highway (aka VOAK) is only 700m away (uphill), a 2min drive and you are on the highway and on your way to the ends of the island or its airports.
You may reach Rethymno and our apartments in 3 different ways. By car rental, by taxi or by bus.
• Renting a car i would say is the best way and the most affordable. It might be a bit stressful on the street but not that hard for a medium & careful driver.
• Taking a taxi either from the airport or with an arrangement (i could arrange such a taxi for you) would cost you from 90 euros (arranged taxi) to 120 euros (airport taxi).
• Finally you could also take the bus which would be the most affordable way but a bit of a trouble. You first you should take a taxi to the city center of Heraklio or Chania (whichever airport you land) and to the KTEL bus service main terminal. From there, there is a bus every hour departing to Rethymno's KTEL bus terminal. From Rethymno main bus terminal (KTEL) we are a 10-15min walk or a 5-7euro taxi.
Other Things to Note
Not anything special, respecting the rest of the guests by keeping the garden clean and not making lots of noise etc. Most of the details you will be able to read a small welcome guest manual in the apartment.
Not anything special, respecting the rest of the guests by keeping the garden clean and not making lots of noise etc. Unfortunately pets are not allowed. Smoking is allowed. Most of the details you will be able to read a small welcome guest manual in the apartment. Make sure you read this note on the wall as it gives you enough information about getting around in your apartment with hot water, wifi password, garden use, apartment keys, doors etc…
A panoramic view of the apartment. Balcony on left, kitchen in the middle and wc in the right of the photo.
Costa was very timely and accurate during booking and friendly hospitality. The apartment n. 5, very spacious for 2/3 people, very clean, has windows to the street and despite doors and windows with double glazing the passage of the cars was a bit 'annoying. The shared garden has plenty of space and a great view of the fortress. "From the garden you have direct access to the shingle beach and the sea with sandy bottom. My wife and I did swim laps in a 'clear water, quiet and full of fish.
Costa was a welcoming host who responded quickly to any of our requests, and the cleaning service partway through our stay was a pleasant surprise.
However, we found the description on Airbnb to be quite misleading. The apartment was nicely cleaned fresh for our arrival and fairly spacious, but it was also extremely noisy - the street right outside was very loud, making it almost impossible to sleep. The photos on the listing also make it appear as if the apartment is located right on the beach. It IS on the water, but not the beach! The waterfront outside is rocky and was full of litter when we were there - not very welcoming. Expect a 45 minute walk from here to the nice stretch of sandy beach in Rethymno, which is located to the east of the city centre.
We expected the apartment to be within a 10-15 minute walk from the city centre, when it reality it was about 30 minutes along a busy stretch of road, not a pleasant walk at all. If you are a young female, expect to be yelled at and even followed (we were) on the walk back in the evening. We did not feel very safe, especially since the apartment is street facing. The closest supermarket is also in town, so expect to trudge at least 20 minutes there to get groceries. There is a mini market (which was closed most of our time there) and a bakery and coffee shop within a 5 minute walk.
The facilities in the apartment were not great, either. The wifi only worked 50% of the time, the shower did not have a holder for the head, the kitchen was not very well equipped, and the beds were hard, full of springs, and painful to sleep on. There are no screens on the door or windows, so don't expect fresh air without mosquitoes.
Personally, we didn't enjoy our stay here, despite how reasonably priced it is and how friendly Costa was. Perhaps we should have known what to expect as the cost is reflective of the apartment, but we really expected more based on the photos provided. If you would like to book here, be prepared for what you will get!
The last year and after a heavy winter with lots of rough seas etc have indeed altered the face of the beach. For anyone who has a bit experience of sea shore property may understand that a rough sea might bring rocks or sand to the shore. Unfortunately the last months we have seen rocks only. This doesn't mean i have photo-edited my picture gallery to look like an elegant sandy beach. No!. Pictures are real and taken by an iPhone only (some apartments have been photographed by airbnb experts). The face of the beach could totally change in a time of one or two weeks. I feel sorry that you were unlucky and experienced only the rocky look of the beach.
If anyone reads all comments from my apartments will realise that most of my guests refer to a 15min or max 20min walk to the city center. You said 30!?? Ok.
Facilities, services, location, host, garden access etc are all priced accordingly and offer a nice package at a very VERY reasonable price. I focus primarily on this combination along with a thorough and clean state of the apartment. I am deeply sorry i did not meet your expectations, maybe i should start upgrading everything and of course converting my apartment to a luxury suite to cover demanding guest needs along with a generous price lift but the majority of my guests will find this unpleasant. I find your review a bit of an exaggeration but i respect that. And i will have it in mind to always look for the best on my properties and offer a better experience to my guests over time.
You could simply say you were looking for a multi-star hotel. I am not promising red carpets and fivestar hotel service. What you see is what you get and what you really pay. I am really sorry about your experience. But i am not misleading nothing and noone. Thats why i am always on standby mode to my guests (requesting or visiting) in order to answer all sorts of questions. You didn't even say goodbye nor a "kalimera" the day before you left when i was right behind you greeting you. Anyway. Hope you enjoy your remaining time on Crete.
Unfortunately we couldnt´meet Costa but his mother Maris was very friendly. The place was quit good, a little bit outside of the city. But I liked it very much, because there weren´t so many tourists. You can buy thing more cheapter then in the town. The apparment was quite big. You have also the most needful things in the kitchen. But you better take some soaps as there were no soaps. And better you take one of the sea-side rooms. The appartment could be also a little bit cleaner.
I was very lucky with Costa! He was super quick in writing me back, sending me all neccessary information how to get to his hotel and he also arranged that I could come prett early in the day. This is how I met his mother, who is just a wonderful and kind woman! She was waiting for me with a over-warm muffin and most kindly offered me an appartement facing the sea! To thank you very much!
The appartement was clean, provided everything I needed and Costa was always there if I had any question! It is also in walkable distance from the bus station, which was great as I travelled with the bus!
All the best to Costa and Maria!
On a personal level, Costa is a really great host. Responsive all the time with all our questions. Very friendly when we met him. The apartments have been newly painted for this season and location is perfect if you have a car. It is a bit of a walk to the old town. The room is comfortable except the shower is a little odd to use because no matter how hard you try you'll get water all over the bathroom floor. All in all a great and comfortable stay.
Costa and his mother Maria were very welcoming and friendly. Costa gave me some great recommendations for places to visit in Crete. The apartment was very comfortable, and close to the center of town. I had a lovely stay there.
