Local Attractions and Activities
The Apuseni Mountains make up part of the Western Carpathians in Transylvania, Romania. The name translates from ‘of the sunset’ or ‘western’. Approximately 400 caves are located within these mountains. The highest peak is called Bihor Peak, at 1849 metres.
The Apuseni Natural Park is a protected area situated in western Romania, in the counties of Alba, Bihor and Cluj. It is located on the central-northern side of the Apuseni Mountains. It makes up a part of the Bihor Mountains to the south and the Vlădeasa Mountains to the north.
The Apuseni Natural Park has an area of 75.784 ha. It was declared a naturally protected area in March of 2000 and represents a mountainous area (mountain peaks, cirques, caves, valleys, karst areas, forests and pastures), with flora and fauna specific to the Western Carpathians.
The park includes a wide variety of tourist attractions year round.
During the spring, you can enjoy hiking mountain trails to view the more than 1,550 different plant species.
In summer, you may glimpse some of the recently discovered wildlife while exploring the many caves and grottos. You can study the wide variety of different minerals while spelunking in over 1500 caves located throughout the park. You can also enjoy the sights while canoeing down the rivers and impressive canyons.
The autumn months put on a spectacular show with the changing colours of the leaves as the days grow shorter and the weather a little chillier.
Winter will entice and excite those thrill seekers looking for that untouched slope of snow for skiing, snowboarding or snow-shoeing in the white, wild mountains.
Rock climbing, bird watching, cycling, horseback riding and camping are just a few more of the many activities you can enjoy at the Apuseni Natural Park.
Every august, a free music festival is organised in Roșia Montană to aid the Save Roșia Montană campaign. Many Romanian, Hungarian and Moldovan celebrities perform pro-bono both to help save the mountain and celebrate multiculturalism and artistic diversity.
The Gold Museum is located in Brad. It holds more than 2,000 exhibits of minerals, historical photos and mining tools showing archaeological existence of humans 5,000 years ago. The exhibits represent many countries from all over the world.
