KIRPAL MEDITATION AND ECOLOGICAL CENTER (KMEC)
Catch your breath from the hustle and bustle in the serenity of our Rollinia Cabin. Queen bed & bunk-bed furnished, it can accommodate up to 4 with an additional charge of $15 each after the first two guests. Children under 12 are free.
The shared fully equipped kitchen and two fully equipped, clean, and modern bathrooms, with a great jungle view, are about 60 feet away.
Our spacious and open ten acre property is surrounded by a buffer of Jungle and features 150+ trees with 30 or so kinds of tropical fruit. You're welcome to help yourself to the freshest fruit possible whenever they're ripe!
Swimming is half a mile away at Isaac Kepo'okalani Hale Park, one of the few safe places for swimming on this rugged, extremely scenic, coast.
A body-temperature warm-pond park is just a half mile further, as well as excellent snorkeling in the wave-protected Kapoho Tide Pools with dozens of corals, and thousands of brightly colored fish.
The nearly constant lava-flow area is just half an hour to the West of us, and perfect for a sunset, or sunrise, hike where you'll often see a cascade of red-hot lava plunging 50 or 60 feet into the ocean boiling below. Truly awesome! A peak experience for most of our guests. Please check to see if lava is flowing is flowing down into the sea as sometimes that changes.
Shopping, a natural foods market, and delicious restaurants are 10 minutes away in Pahoa Town. Several large Farmer Markets operate on the weekends too.
Our Teak Meditation Pavilion was made in Bali and is, to us, a very holy and special place for prayer and reflection. We don't preach, or otherwise "reach out"...., it's simply there if you would like some peace and tranquility - which is, as most people tell us, is our main product. :-)
Please try and check in before dark or shortly thereafter.
The cost contained herein is all inclusive covering the required Hawaii Hotel Room Tax Hawaii General Excise Tax.
We do not charge for children under 12 years of age. Ask for a special offer if you are bringing children.
Check out our reviews on AirBNB! www.airbnb.com. They speak for themselves. KMEC is the best value around for places under $100.
Mahalo Nui Loa,
Len & the gang.
We comfortably exist on a large solar electric system, some propane, and mostly catchment rain water. You don't have to scrimp, but we do ask that you be mindful of the limits of these kinds of "off grid" systems.
A VEGETARIAN FACILITY
KMEC is a vegetarian oriented facility. The owners and some of our staff are strict vegetarians avoiding meat, fish fowl and eggs (both fertile and infertile). They do eat cheese and dairy. Meat eating and non-vegetarian guests are most welcome at KMEC. You should advise our General Manager of your dietary preferences when booking your reservation. We will make every effort to accommodate you and provide you with the most enjoyable stay possible.
DRUGS, TOBACCO, ALCOHOL AND INTOXICANTS
KMEC is a drug, alcohol, tobacco and intoxicants free center. Our focus is on meditation, spirituality, healing our body, giving peace to our soul and healthy living. The owners and some of our staff totally abstain from the use of drugs, alcohol, tobacco and intoxicants. We recognize that not all of our guests are similarly oriented and you will be welcome in any event. You should advise our General Manager of your particular preferences, if any, with regard to these issues and we will make every effort to accommodate you. Please let management know in advance when inviting friends or relatives on property.
KMEC is a place that promotes nonviolence, truthfulness, humility, purity, selfless service, meditation and healthy living. KMEC does not discriminate based on age, race, religion or sexual preferences.
This place was wonderful. We stayed with our two daughters and it was restful and relaxing. Accommodations were nice and well equipped kitchen. Our hostess was very helpful and made us feel right at home. She gave us great tips on things to do. Wish we could have stayed longer!
It was a pleasure having Kay and her daughters with us. They were very respectful of our guidelines, and that's the kind of guests we would love to host. We hope to see them again.
An interesting experience. Its a jungle cabin so expect insects, noises during the night and somewhat ruggered facade but we had a nice enough night there.
We loved staying at this paradise! I highly recommend it to anyone. The drive out there is marvelous and the property has all kinds of trees with fresh fruits that you eat for breakfast. The staff is awesome and helpful. Thanks for everything!
Host & staff were very friendly, however, it's not at all the facility we expected.
On a second read of the description just now, it is fully accurate, however: it's not fully descriptive. The photo makes the cabin look like it's tucked into a secluded spot (far from it), the description mentions nothing of the staff that need to tromp close to the cabin to use the bathrooms thru the night. It felt like they were walking right outside the screen (cinder walkway was really ~15' away, but having arrived after dark, we had no idea). This doused any thoughts of intimacy on our one night get away.
It also doesn't mention the other cabin within coughing distance, or the several times that cars drove past the facility thru the night & felt obliged to honk.
It mentions nothing about the 7AM noise from the staff beginning to clean up from a large event that finished the day before. It mentions nothing about the breakfast, which one might expect as included from a place adverting themselves on a B&B site. Not only is there no breakfast, there is not even coffee (save the generosity of James & Kyle sharing their private stock).
The 'open air' bathroom was fine by me, but my wife was uncomfortable. There is also no light to get you to & up the short stairs to the bath.... a $15 motion light from Costco would solve that. One would also expect the description to mention there is no hot water. Also - it was no issue the night we were there, but those two bathrooms serve all 25+ potential guests on compound.
Frankly the description seems intended to do exactly what it did to us, & we felt used.
If it had been described as a $50 hostel we'd have given it a 7 or 8, but touted as a B&B at over $100 (with fees) it's not a choice we'll ever make again.
KMEC is certainly interested in affording each and every guest an optimal experience and we apologize for not meeting ???'s expectations. Neither our website nor our listing suggests that we provide drinks or food service for our guests. We do provide, however, all kinds of organic, even exotic fruits, many of which cannot be purchased except at local markets when in season. The Rollinia fruit, for example, is truly a delicacy and I hope that you had some of them as they were plentiful and in season, but in the future we will provide complimentary coffee/tea (organic of course). Many of the issues complained about could have been avoided (especially lack of privacy and separation from staff accommodations) with a daylight arrival as is suggested on our website. A move to a more private cabin would have been accommodated given a timely request. The property provides more than 2 showers (six in all) for guests (some more private than others) and, had you arrived before dark, gaining familiarity with the property could have avoided this alleged inconvenience. Sometimes the hot water needs to run awhile a few seconds before getting up to temperature. Flashlights are provided, however The Noni does have a switch which turns on the lights to the toilet and shower facilities in the rear of the cabin. This switch is located on the wall directly besides the front door. Again, a daylight arrival would have avoided this inconvenience. We sincerely hope that you will reconsider a future visit and as a gesture of our good will, we are extending to you a $50 credit to be used at a cabin of his choice in that regard. P.S. The coffee will be on us as well!
Robert Herndon, General Manager, KMEC Hawaii.
It was a nice airy experience, and really worth trying it! Sadly it was raining a lot during our short time staying.
Aloha, We originally planned to stay here for 3 nights, but it was so wonderful that we extended to a full week! The cabin is nice and clean and comfortable. The grounds are beautiful and the fruit trees are plentiful with their fruit available to eat. Stephen was very helpful with touring information and his kindness. Will be back soon!
We spent a lovely evening here. Our cabin was clean, airy, quiet and beautifully, but simply, furnished. The bed was exceedingly comfortable! Bathrooms in adjacent building were open air yet private. The grounds are stunning and perfect for seeking solicitude. .
Our hosts were helpful with steering us to a local spot to snorkel and then swim in thermal pools while watching the sunrise.
A completely positive experience. I wish we had stayed longer!

About the Host, Kirpal Meditation And Ecological Center (KMEC), A Vegetarian Orchard For Yoga, Retreats & Workshops
Kirpal Meditation and Ecological Center is a half mile from the ocean on the eastern tip of the Big Island of Hawaii, approximately seven miles from the small village of Pahoa. The 10-acre ocean-view property is blessed with average daytime temperatures of 85° F year-round, and 65° F at night, with cool, fragrant trade winds, surrounding tropical flora, including old growth mangoes, nearby swimming, surfing and snorkeling.
This property was once a papaya farm and is now newly planted with bamboo, papaya, palms, banana and many other fruit trees. The octagonal Balinese meditation pavilion is set among shade-trees with an expansive view of the ocean. The island wildlife is all around us – a variety of birds by day and at night there's the pleasant chirping of Coqui frogs – and there are no snakes. Natural wonders include Volcanoes National Park, for lava and crater viewing, volcanically heated warm ponds and steam vents (as outdoor saunas) and other wonders of the lush tropics.
Kmec opened in the summer of 2008 for pre-arranged seasonal meditation retreats and private meditation-vacations on request. Additionally, we would like to extend our welcome to Big Island travelers offering cozy cottages and open air kitchen and bath. We offer daily free meditation instructions and practices at our beautiful Balinese meditation pavillion. Additionally, we offer Yoga and nature tours upon guest's request (donations accepted).
