The A-Frame in the Canadaway Woods

Cabin - Entire home/apt · Bard Rd, Cherry Creek, NY 14718, United States

4 bedrooms with 2 queen beds and 3 twin beds as well as a pull out sofa, a fully equipped kitchen, eating areas and big living room open out to a big deck overlooking a stream. The big back yard is perfect for dogs and kids.

The Space

The Canadaway woods are a winter wonderland, with snowmobiling, cross country skiing and snowshoeing right out the front door. Lake effect snows off Lake Erie cover up to 250 inches a year. But our intrepid plow keeps the driveways open. A covered space off the garage is available for snowmobiles. 45 minutes away are the slopes of Holiday Valley.
Kids love this A-Frame space, from the circular stairs to the octagon room, to the balcony over the great room to the large 2 story deck overlooking the creek. What's not to love! This is the house for kids and pets, a place where you can relax. Walk over the bridge and come in. The great room opens off the kitchen, and a large wrap-around deck invites you from the breakfast nook or the living room. A circular stair excites the children, who will discover two bedrooms and a play room upstairs, as well as a balcony. The queen size bed in the one bedroom upstairs and the downstairs bedroom provide comfort for the tallest members of your party. Three twin beds provide additional sleeping space, as does a pullout sofa in the living room. One upstairs bedroom has a half-bath attached. Downstairs the bathroom has a tub and shower.
Lots of ski paths beckon outdoors. The Eastside Overland Trail is right across the road.
Choosing how to explore the area will be a challenge. Will you want to hunt for antiques? Chautauqua County is a mecca! Or quilts? The Amish women down the road in Cherry Creek and South Dayton have a lot to show you. Or maybe you want to do wine tasting at the vineyards on the other side of the hill. Are you ready for good music? In the winter the Metropolitan Opera is shown in HD nearby and the University has many performances. Live music at restaurants and brew pubs make the winter nights a pleasure. Festivals in Fredonia, Chautauqua, barge music, beach music, are scheduled all summer. Perhaps a day of inspiration or challenge at Lily Dale or Chautauqua. Or fishing, boating or swimming in Chautauqua, Cassadaga or Lake Erie. Are you missing the trees? Hikes through the state forests start right across the street.
Driving time from Buffalo is one hour, and the Dunkirk-Fredonia Thruway exit is 10 minutes away.
Please note that the fees include NY State Sales tax and Chautauqua County Bed tax. Alas, taxes find us even in deep country.

  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Nancy's house this past week. We brought along two small dogs and they loved every minute of it! Freddie and Jim were our hosts this week and they were awesome to deal with. They were super helpful and would do anything to make our stay more comfortable. The house is so cozy and warm, and we appreciated being able to utilize the full kitchen to prepare our meals while we were out there. We packed groceries and had no trouble making all our meals during our stay. We experienced all kinds of weather while we were out there, from blizzard-like conditions to spring weather! My dogs and I had a great time playing in the snow and exploring the area. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who is visiting the area. We are determined on making another trip back there during the Summer as most of the attractions were closed until April or May.

  • The A-Frame has such an interesting history, which you can read about in the guestbook at the cabin. Nancy and Merv are wonderful hosts; they even left fresh cinnamon bread, pear butter, and snowshoes for us when we arrived. They were also super welcoming to our dog which made the stay that much more enjoyable. We had a relaxing much needed getaway exploring the trails that are within a mile of the cabin. We can't wait to come back!

  • Wonderful place...comfortable, warm, inviting. And amazing property for snowshoeing...the dogs had a BLAST running through the snow.

If you are looking for a great place to do some real R and R this is the cabin for you!

Would go back again for SURE

  • The A-Frame is a wonderful and unique cabin in the middle of a beautiful landscape. We spent the weekend here to celebrate birthdays and had a great time! Nancy is a great host who made sure we had everything we could possibly need and even left us a loaf of home-baked bread. She provided us with snow shoes and we spent one of our days hiking through the property's woods. The A-Frame in Canadaway Woods is a magical place to retreat and we can't wait to visit again! If you are in the area I completely recommend staying here!

  • I LOVE this place. I can't wait to go back.

Lots of comments here say things about the water but it was an absolute non factor for us. Yes it's a bit smelly but the cottage more than makes up for it with the location, comfort and homey feel.

  • It´s a wonderful and charming old house in the woods. Nancy and her husband are great hosts. We got a fresh selfmade bread for welcoming, tasting realy delicious. We got helpful Information about the surrounding and good tasting restaurants. It's the perfect place to get away and relax. The house is fully equipped, including games, puzzles and movies. We highly recommend this place to anyone wishing to get away from everyday life.

  • I've stayed twice at the cabin- once with a group of girlfriends for a weekend to visit nearby Lilydale, and once with my husband to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. It's the perfect place to get away and relax. The cabin is stocked with everything you'd need to cook like you're home. The deck is great for hanging out with food on the grill. The beds are cozy, and the space is clean and comfortable all around. Nancy is a welcoming host and bakes a delicious sweet bread! If you're looking for peace and quiet in the woods, this is it.

  • A wonderful, quiet get-away location. Many places to visit nearby - Niagara Falls, Buffalo, many great wineries, hiking trails in the forests all around the house, and many lakes (including Lake Chautauqua) nearby to enjoy. The house is fully equipped, including games, puzzles and movies to enjoy on a rainy day. The best part was the loaf of wonderful cinnamon-walnut bread freshly baked by Nancy for our arrival. There were four of us sisters who spend a week annually at some location, and this was about as good as it gets for our time together.

I fell in love with The Canadaway area when I hiked through as a Girl Scout, and I fell in love with Merv in Coimbra, Portugal. Now I am lucky enough to live in with Merv in the cabin we built in the Canadaway Woods behind the Old House and the A-Frame. We have restored the Old House and the A-Frame to host our family and friends during Camp PapaNana, an annual weeklong retreat for grandchildren, neighbors, and extended family. But the houses pine for more company--which is where you come in! Merv and I love to travel and cook in Europe, and have eaten very well in Portugal, France and Italy. We love antiques and good books and languages. As our children were growing we hosted many exchange students and we hope that our houses will host many international guests. Merv speaks and reads French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, and is working on his Mandarin Chinese. I speak Spanish and Portuguese. We both were predicted to be foresters by the preference/aptitude tests we took in high school, and after careers in pharmaceutical marketing (me) and ministry/counseling (Merv) we are happy to be living in the Canadaway Woods and managing our forest! Do come and visit!
