Setúbal was a busy port during the Roman occupation and gained new importance when it was conquered from the Moors in 1217, and was awarded protected status by Order of Santiago. The city became an important economic center thanks to the ceramic and fisheries, and became also a popular vacation spot of the aristocracy during the fifteenth century. Setúbal is closely associated with the life and work of acclaimed poet of the eighteenth century, Manuel Maria Barbosa du Bocage ((PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)), and the house where he was born is now a museum. Another important figure associated with the city is the opera singer of the eighteenth century, Luisa Todi.
Exploring the natural parks of the estuaries of the Tagus and Sado are one of the favorite activities for nature lovers.
The village of Palmela is especially famous for its wine and boasts a magnificent castle that stands atop a hill offering magnificent views of the Capuchin Convent and Tróia Peninsula.
In the villages of Azeitão and Quinta do Anjo, on the way to Arrábida mountain, you can taste some of the most delicious sweet wines and muscat of the district. Most local producers have their own cellars and shops that are open to the public. They have also typical desserts and the very appreciated cheese of Azeitão.
Situated in the south of Setúbal, the picturesque village of Sesimbra is the perfect example of a destination of charm and deserves a visit thanks to its beach, restaurants of fresh fish and seafood and views of the coast with colorful boats floating in the waters. Considered a popular seaside resort, this village lies at the foot of Arrábida mountain and its nature Reserve, where you can spot a number of species of animals and plants.
In the southern slopes of Arrábida mountain are obtained magnificent views over the Atlantic.
Fonte da Telha is a great extension of Beach coastline and there is an important Portuguese fishing community. Offers several makeshift parking lots and a few restaurants. At one end of the beach there is a nudist colony near the Cape that can be seen in the background.
