About This Listing
Relax in a colourful, older style character filled apartment in a leafy, bayside suburb that has great access to the city/CBD. Easy going, relaxed and respectful guests welcome.
large bedroom...comfortable futon on springs bed...Big enough to do yoga in....Window has view to side garden.
The whole apartment is available. Minimum bookings of 2 nights.
Close to bayside beaches, public transport and cafes, the apartment is a two-bedroom ground-floor flat built in the early 1900s, in the leafy Melbourne bayside suburb of Elwood.
It has unusually high ceilings, large windows and natural wooden floorboards. The lounge and bedrooms have plenty of light whatever the season.
The kitchen is modern. It features a drawer dishwasher, new stove, slim silver fridge, wooden floor and yellow and blue walls. It is well-equipped with a lot of quality cooking utensils and quirky crockery and cooking in it is fun.
The apartment has a high-speed internet connection which guests can use for free - please consider subsequent guests however and don't download heavily. I have no TV, by choice. Lots of music though, with a stereo in the lounge and a lovely retro-posh radio in kitchen. And quite a few books and games (monopoly, scrabble, backgammon etc), not to mention books (especially art books).
The flat is light-filled and airy with relaxing, colourful decor. The spacious lounge room is the perfect place to relax, with two large windows looking out to the front garden and side gardens with its mix of native Australian and European trees. The front patio is good for bicycle storage and porch sitting.
The bedrooms each have a queen sized bed. The bedroom featured (smaller bedroom) now has a higher bed - not a futon but an extremely comfortable latex bed. It has a chest of drawers but no wardrobe. The larger bedroom is huge and has a large desk and wardrobe.
The pink bathroom features a big, deep, claw-foot bath with an original early-1900s shower. It's got great water pressure and the hot water is plentiful. The front-loading washing machine is efficient and easy to use. I have a dryer out the back that can be hooked up for long term guests paying for their own utilities.
Elwood is leafy, relaxed, close to the tourist spots of St Kilda (Luna Park, beach, Salt Sea Baths) and the more culturally diverse Carlisle St (Easter-European delis, cafes, supermarkets, train station) and the quiet, old-world Ripponlea (Jewish Orthodox, train station, and the excellent Melbourne restaurant Attica).
The beach is just a 15 min walk/7 min cycle away; the apartment is close to both St Kilda and Elwood beaches.
It's close to the train and tram, taking you into the city in 20 by train, 30 minutes by tram, 20 -30 min by car depending on traffic or a leafy 30min bike ride.
This apartment suits respectful and clean guests who like an abode that is comfortable and bohemian without being five-star and modern.
Please note that guests need to leave the flat in a tidy and clean state - rubbish thrown out, linen stripped off beds, no perishables left in fridge, all dishes away and furniture left where you found it.
Open to people of all cultures, sexualities, ages and so on! The flat has two small steps at the entrance and the shower is in the bath so unfortunately it's not ideal for people with physical access challenges.
Please note that it's first in first served with bookings so if you are keen to stay please book as soon as you know you want to.
The whole apartment.
Regarding the kitchen - please help yourself to dry foodstuffs (I have lots of spices and herbs) and anything in the fridge. Please note that I don't buy food especially for guests (milk, bread etc) as I try to keep the fee low and work load down and also generally folks now are so particular with what they eat and I don't like to see food go to waste. Nearby supermarkets - the closest (7 min) is 168 Tennyson Street (website hidden)
Larger supermarkets are on Carlisle Street in Balaclava (Coles and a small Safeway) and Safeway on Acland St, St Kilda. They are all a 10 - 15 minute walk away. The closest market is the South Melbourne Market which is worth a visit if you are a tourist. I recommend Carlisle St, Balaclava for the best food shopping nearby with vegetable shops, bakeries (including Russian and Jewish) and The Coffee Company for fresh beans. And $2 shops! :)
Interaction with Guests
If you have the whole apartment then we will be interacting online. If you are booking the single room then I shall be living there too -very friendly but also laid-back.
Neighbourhood is a highlight! Elwood is the green, quieter, graceful partner of St Kilda (St Kilda is bars, Luna Park, Salt Sea Baths, restaurants, sex workers, street life), Balaclava (grocery shopping, community life, cafes, restaurants, library, Jewish community), Ripponlea (quaint, orthodox Jewish community), …….Green leafy streets, close to bay, close to funky shopping areas, multicultural (European mainly but some Indian folks too), parks, close to St Kilda. Close to multiple public transport options. My favourite parts of Elwood are walking around the tree lined streets of eclectic architecture, the stroll down to Elwood beach and the community life of Carlisle St in Balaclava.
Tram, train, bus and cycle paths are all on hand. The numbers 67 and 3 tram are at your doorstep, the 246 bus is a little further. The Sandringham train line has two nearby train stations within 7-10 minute walk - Ripponlea and Balaclava. I generally cycle into the city if its good weather - it's just one road along Brighton Road which becomes St Kilda road with a bike path straight into the city.
Parking is on the street and free - so you can leave your car there and head off on foot or other means. It's a safe area - I have never had any trouble with leaving my car in the street.
The flat is a 30- 45 min drive ( traffic dependent) from the airport. A taxi will cost $50 - 65 depending again on traffic. Best option is the Sky Bus (about $15) to the city and then either a taxi from Southern Cross station ( about $20) or, if you have little luggage, a Sandringham train to Ripponlea station then a 10 min walk to the flat...
Other Things to Note
I have been really impressed by Airbnb guests - always had lovely, interesting and respectful guests. My philosophy is that generosity begets generosity. Please leave the apartment just as you found it.
Please strip the beds of linen and place in the washing machine, with towels, before you leave and put them in the washing machine and put it on. This way you will know if you have left anything precious of yours at the bottom of the bed and it will help the cleaner as they can hang out the washing as soon as they get there. If you can also put kitchen linen in that would be great. If anything is broken please let me know. Thank you!
Guests who are respectful of a space, open and friendly and who look after other's things are great guests!
Such a quirky apartment, with a wonderful old charm to it. We walked to Acland St, St Kilda both mornings for breakfast before we caught the tram into to city, and it is such a lovely walk getting to look at all the old homes through the quiet tree-lined streets.
The shower has GREAT water pressure as well which is fantastic!
Bree's house is clean, quiet and with many meaningful details, I really enjoy the stay in her house. It's pity that I haven't met Bree so I think I've missed an interesting chat.
Lovely, clean and comfortable in quiet street, with excellent feather down doona to keep nice and warm in mid winter. Very happy to find cards already there to use to negotiate the city's public transport system. Bree answered questions quickly and was very easy to communicate with.
Bree is so nice. Its a great experience. I love yr house so much ! Nice place to stay :)
Bree's place as clean and tidy on our arrival. It's a lovely older place set amongst tree lined streets. The beds were comfortable and the high ceilings gives the place a spacious feeling. It was great to be close to trains, trams and buses. It was particularly good to be near Acland Road and the great St Kilda shopping area. There's a bit of noise from cars going up Tennyson street in the morning but this is inner city living and we were already up so not a bother to me. I recommend it to others as an affordable and comfy accommodation, particularly suited to people who appreciate an older style place - you will love it!
Absolutely beautiful apartment! Photos don't do it justice. Super comfortable and filled with warmth and character. Excellent location. Can't recommended this place highly enough. Would definitely stay here again.
Bree was a perfect host. Great communication and very fast response time. Thanks Bree!
Everything about the apartment was exactly as said. The neighbourhood is quiet and friendly. The apartment is spacious and eclectic. It is a older apartment but nicely furnished and comfortable.
