The Space

Relax in this quirky, colourful, beachside apartment. Close to beaches and cafes, the apartment is lovely and cool in summer, and comfortable in winter.

It's a two-bedroom ground-floor flat built in the early 1900s, in the leafy Melbourne bayside suburb of Elwood. It has unusually high ceilings, large windows and natural wooden floorboards. The lounge and bedrooms have plenty of light whatever the season.

The kitchen has just been renovated. It features a drawer dishwasher, new stove, slim silver fridge, wooden floor and yellow and blue walls. The kitchen is well-equipped with a lot of quality cooking utensils and quirky crockery and cooking in it is fun.

The apartment has a high-speed internet connection which guests can use for free. I have no TV, by choice. Lots of music though, with a stereo in the lounge and a lovely retro-posh radio in kitchen. And quite a few books and games (monopoly, scrabble, backgammon etc).

The flat is light-filled and airy with relaxing, colourful decor. The spacious lounge room is the perfect place to relax, with two large windows looking out to the front garden with its mix of native Australian and European trees. The front patio is good for bicycle storage and porch sitting.

The bathrooms each have a queen sized bed. The bedroom featured (smaller bedroom) now has a higher bed - not a futon. It has a chest of drawers but no wardrobe. The larger bedroom is huge and has a large desk and wardrobe.

The pink bathroom features a big, deep, claw-foot bath with an original early-1900s shower. It's got great water pressure and the hot water is plentiful. The front-loading washing machine is efficient and easy to use. I have a dryer out the back that can be hooked up for long term guests paying for their own utilities.

Elwood is leafy, relaxed, close to the tourist spots of St Kilda (Luna Park, beach, Salt Sea Baths) and the more culturally diverse Carlisle St (Easter-European delis, cafes, supermarkets, train station) and the quiet, old-world Ripponlea (Jewish Orthodox, train station, and the excellent Melbourne restaurant Attica).

The beach is just a 15 min walk/7 min cycle away; the apartment is close to both St Kilda and Elwood beaches.
It's close to the train and tram, taking you into the city in 20/30 minutes - or a leafy 30min bike ride.

This apartment would suit easy-going, highly trustworthy, communicative, respectful and clean guests who like an abode that is comfortable and bohemian without being five-star and modern. Please note that guests need to leave the flat in a tidy and clean state - rubbish thrown out, linen stripped off beds, no perishables left in fridge, all dishes away and furniture left where you found it.

I'm into art, yoga, recycling and social justice issues. Open to people of all cultures, sexualities, ages and so on! The flat has two small steps at the entrance and the shower is in the bath so unfortunately it's not ideal for people with physical access challenges.

Please note that it's first in first served with bookings so if you are keen to stay please book as soon as you know you want to.

Single people can get a special offer. There is a fee of $35 each per person per night if the booking is for more then 2 adults. That fee only applies to adults (over 18 years of age) and not children. Children are welcome and the flat has a lot of things to delight children. I have no cot or high chair however.

All bookings are welcome but longer term stays between mid May till early Sept of a month or more attract a special reduced offer of $500/week.

The Neighborhood

Neighbourhood is a highlight! Elwood is the green, quieter, graceful partner of St Kilda (bars, Luna Park, Salt Sea Baths, restaurants, sex workers, street life), Balaclava (grocery shopping, community life, cafes, restaurants, library, Jewish community), Ripponlea (quaint, orthodox Jewish community), Brighton (posh, rich, boring :) )…….Green leafy streets, close to bay, close to funky shopping areas, multicultural (European), parks, close to St Kilda. Close to multiple public transport options. My favourite parts of Elwood are walking around the tree lined streets of eclectic architecture, the stroll down to Elwood beach and the community life of Carlisle St in Balaclava.

Getting around

Tram, train, bus and cycle paths are all on hand. The numbers 67 and 3 tram are at your doorstep, the 246 bus is a little further. The Sandringham train line has two nearby train stations within 7-10 minute walk - Ripponlea and Balaclava. I generally cycle into the city - it's just one road with a bike path straight into the city.
Parking is on the street and free - so you can leave your car there and head off on foot or other means. It's a safe area - I have never had any trouble with leaving my car in the street.

  • Bree's house was a home away from home. Big and beautiful, it has a lovely vibe about it. I stayed here with my partner and we had a great time, walking to nearby Acland St through the St Kilda Botanical Gardens. We didn't meet Bree but found her extremely helpful through all interactions. We will definitely be staying again when we can :)

  • We really enjoyed our stay in Elwood, the location was great for us and close to Number 67 tram, and the flat was very comfortable with large rooms, would definitely suit a family without crowding each other in the least. The kitchen was well equipped with all the usual including dishwasher. We did not miss having a TV in the slightest and so enjoyed the wifi. Do eat at Lezzet (the Turkish lace on Brighton Rd, just a couple of blocks).

  • Bree's apartment was a cool haven in the hottest of Melbourne temperatures! It is a beautiful space full of character, quirky decorations and neat features. My son, husband and I were very comfortable and loved using this as a base to explore the city and beyond. The myki cards were a really nice touch as was the wifi!
    Bree was easy to communicate with with ideas for places to explore. I would not hesitate to recommend her and her beautiful home. We hope to be back!

  • WOW we were so impressed with Bree's apartment! Clean, neat, loads of character and so homely. We had a great time looking at all Bree's treasures that were lovingly placed throughout the apartment. Lots of books and games were also available. This apartment is real value for money. We were blessed to meet Bree and she was a lovely host. Everything we needed was there and cooking in the kitchen was a breeze as it was so well stocked with everything from utensils to cooking ingredients. The appliances were great, even made me consider buying a dishwasher the same as Bree's; so practical. The area was lovely and peaceful too. And so close to the tram and train. Bree even has some Myki cards (Melbourne's transport ticket system) available for us to use. Coles and other shops were only a short drive but we preferred to walk. In walking distance were some lovely cafés and restaurants and a convenience store. A week wasn't long enough, but when we left it already had begun to feel like a home away from home. Thanks Bree!
