Rustic Cottage with loft bed up a sturdy ladder, deck, gas grill, green surroundings, walk across the grass to El Bano (sink, toilet, outdoor shower), microwave, electric kettle, toaster, coffee maker, bar sink, fridge, TV, wireless internet upon request. Smoking only outside, please.
Minimum stay: one week
We speak English, Deutsch, a little French, Spanish and Solinger Platt!
If it's the season you might want to pick starfruit, passion fruit, yellow- and strawberry guava on the 2+ acre compound; coconuts are available yearround, shampoo ginger will give your hair that special shine and some kitchen herbs can be found near the cottage as well.
Just 5 minutes walk from the cottage you'll reach Steelgrass Farm. My brother-in-law offers educational tours of his chocolate farm 3 times a week! Very informative, fun and utterly ONOlicious.....bring some dark chocolate, raw Kauai honey and vanilla beans back for the folks at home!
Just 3 miles down the hill in Kapa'a town you find all the shops, restaurants and cafes you might like to visit. Right by the Moikeha canal and the historic Japanese lantern you'll see the quaint public library with internet access. Of course, there are numerous cafes as well that offer wifi: Small Town Cafe, Cafe Hemingway and Starbucks, to name a few. Dinner choices in downtown Kapa'a are: Scotty's, Backyard's, Sushi Bushido, East Side and yes, you got to try Olympic Cafe across the road for Happy Hour on Fridays, 4 to 7, cheap beer and free tacos!
That's just a few places in Kapa'a town........
Right behind the library you will also find the longest section of our Multi Use Coastal Path: Walk, jog, cycle or roller blade up North to the biggest sandy beach near Kapa'a - KEALIA - where you can swim at the North end or try surfing - lifeguard present till 5 pm. Then continue on all the way to beautiful wild Donkey Beach and see humpback whales out there between late November and April!
The closest beach which is safe for swimming at any time is Lydgate Beach Park, right next to the Wailua River mouth. it's a 60-acre park with lots of amenities, walled seawater ponds, showers, pavilions, picnic tables, barbecue pits, playground, lifeguard station and a 2-mile-long path for walking, jogging, cycling and more.
You'll find the house rules listed inside the cottage. There are not too many BIG ones.....No shoes inside - unless you use a dedicated "indoor only" pair.....no smoking inside.......love our kitties or shoo them away, but don't let them inside!.....Be kind and considerate - like you certainly are all the time anyway - and don't hesitate to ask when something is not clear / bothers you / interests you etc.....ask me how NOT to lock yourselves out!! ALOHA!
Really nice place to stay Jhon and Charlotte where very nice and helpful. It was awesome to meet someone who helped start surfing in Newquay ( our home town). We had all we needed and the town was a few minutes drive away and that was great for us. Perfect
Great cabin in authentic Hawaiian setting. Charlotte and John are truly amazing people who made us feel welcome and took care of any needs/wants we had. I would recommend this place to anyone. It was the highlight of our trip.
Our stay at Kai's Rustic Cottage was just amazing!
Charlotte was a wonderful and very friendly host (we found a filled fridge when we arrived!!!) and the Cottage is very spacious and well equipped. The bathroom "el baño" is really close to the cottage and it is a highlight itself! Because there is no wifi available in the cottage, you have to go a few yards up to the lanai of the mainhouse, which is no problem, but a great chance to get to know the guests of the Cozy Cottage and to admire the breathtaking spangled sky at night.... Bring some mosquito repellent, so the mosquitos won't eat you up!
We will definitely recommend Charlotte and her cottage to our friends and if we ever come back to Kaua'i, we will inquire the Kai's Rustic Cottage again! Thanks, Charlotte, for an amazing stay!
Our stay at Kai's rustic cottage has been awesome!
Charlotte greeted us by making a complete tour of the cottage (a little building separated from the main house in a very nice neighbourhood). Everything had been prepared for our arrival and the cottage was impeccable.
We had everything we needed. Outside bathroom and shower were impeccable as well and I'd say almost fun to use (although going to the bathroom can be less convenient overnight).
We were 10 mins away from Kapaa downtown, very convenient for enjoying happy hours.
Many thanks to Charlotte an John!
After staying at a beachfront hotel for 4 nights in Kapaa, my boyfriend and I headed to Kai's Rustic Cottage for the next 10 nights. The pictures in the listing are misleading, the cottage is huge and could easily sleep 5 people or more. There's the sleeping loft, a living room/dining room area with 2 couches, a dining room table, a small tv, a walk in closet area, a twin bed sleeping area separated by a divider, a small kitchenette (with a bigger fridge however, very nice), and a huge deck with a covered table for 4, a massive grill which included a burner, and a wash area with sink. Outside about 20 steps away is the outdoor bathroom (real toilet not composting) and shower with sink. Upon arrival, there were chocolates, a loaf of bread, sparkling water, milk, a stick of butter, a bag of gourmet coffee, and a nice note from Charlotte. You also have access to snorkel gear, laundry services (at her private home 500ft away), beach towels, bug spray, sunscreen, and other little toiletries. Charlotte was friendly, but we only saw her a couple times. John (her husband), we saw almost everyday and it such a joy to speak with him. We had coffee with him, he gave us insider info on many activities we enjoyed on Kauai, he gave us some left over tequila he had, and was just overall a kind man. We had so much to do on Kauai, that unfortunately we never got to have dinner with them like they offered. We regret that very much now! So the location of the cottage is up in the Wailua area, about 10 minutes to Kapaa, set in a residential suburb. It was a nice home base, centrally located on the island in general. The cottage was pretty clean, but I want to remind future renters that it is rustic, and you WILL encounter geckos (and their poop), ants, and other bugs inside the cottage. They have raid you can use, and even though it threw me off the first couple of nights, you get used to it and realize that you're staying in a jungle paradise and bugs are a part of it. If you're looking for a touristy, 4 star place this isn't it (and I'm glad it wasn't). Don't leave food out, keep clean, and you won't have much of a bug issue. Overall, this was by far the best deal on lodging on the whole island, even cheaper than the hostels! The overall package (the hosts, the cottage, the amenities, and I can't forget Muffin, the lovable deck kitty) made this an amazing deal and an amazing experience. Respectful, adventurous people will appreciate this special place the most!
All I can say is "amazing"! Charlotte and Jon were the best hosts I could have ever hoped for. When I arrived Charlotte met me with a big smile and a quick tour of my cottage. There was fresh fruit,oj,and most importantly coffee! I looked forward to the mornings when Jon would stop by and have a cup of Joe with me and talk about art and history! I learned a little history about the island, places to see and eat,, and on my last day I toured there family chocolate farm just up the road. it's good to know there are people as kind and genuine as Jon and Charlotte still out there! I highly recommend staying with them!!!! I'm already planning for next winter.

Originally from Germany I was very fortunate to move West halfway around the world, via Cornwall, UK, and Washington, DC to the most beautiful rock in the middle of the Pacific - KAUA'I!
John and I have lived here for the last 21 years and enjoyed the company of many visitors - family, old and new friends, many of them through airbnb: Traveling to and fro this remote island can be challenging; thus having the world come to us has been greatly rewarding!
When not working as a tour guide I enjoy hiking, swimming, reading, gardening, the Great Outdoors at large, volunteering with beach cleaning and selling fresh produce at the Farmers' Market.
I'm a big aficionado of slack key music; also like tango, Fado and French chansons. My favorite foods range from organic greens to spicy curries....and part of my heart and soul will always be in South India!
