Hohenems is a town in the westernmost Austrian state of Vorarlberg. It is in the middle of the Austrian part of the Rhine Valley and has a population of about 15,000 habitants.
Hohenems attractions include a Renaissance palace dating back to the 16th century, a jewish museum and a jewish district.
You can also have a nice walk to the Schlossberg (740 m) within 45 min from the center and you can discover the ruins of Alt-Ems, a castle dating back to the 9th century.
Walk around the Schlossplatz - the main square. In the 18th century Hohenems was noted for the discovery of two manuscripts of the Nibelungenlied, found in 1755 and 1779 in the palace's library.
Or go and see the Bregenz Festival at lake constance with its incredible view from the stage. Of course, Bregenz has more to offer with its museums and the nice area around the lake.
Whether winter or summer, this region has something interesting for everybody. We are located where Switzerland, German and Austria meet, so we are ideally located for visiting all 3 countries.
Highly recommended! Extremly hospitable, warm and helpfull people.
I stayed at Melanie's family-house for 3 weeks and was really enjoying it a lot.
The room was comfortable, bright and had a cool view on the surrounding mountains.
Both the room and a bathroom were clean and pleasent.
At any time I had acess to a big kitchen and dining room, washing maschine, ironing stuff.
Concerning location: Hohenems is in the middle of beautifull Rhein valley of Vorarlberg. Within 20 minutes you can reach with a car the coolest cities of Vorarlberg (Bregenz, Feldkirch) and within 30-45 minutes you will get to good ski resorts (Montafon, Sonnenkopf). It is also a great starting point for trips to Swizerland (I strongly recommend thermal baths in Valls).
If you don't have a car - Melanie's family house is just 5 min away from the central railway station in Hohenems - so you have a very good acess to the best public transport in Vorarlberg.
But, what is most important - Melanie and her father are extremly hospitable, warm and helpfull.
They shared with me plenty of insiders knowledge.
Whatever if you wan't to learn small or big ski resorts, cool clubs in vorarlberger cities or heritage places in the region, they will help you for sure.
Without their knowledge and eagerness to share it, for sure I would never got a chance to learn beautifull small shelters hidden in the neighbouring mountains and would never enjoy teaste of original, regional mountain cheese and drinks!
Alles sehr unkompliziert. Hat sehr gut funktioniert.
It was a pleasure to stay at the house of Melanie's father. He and his girlfriend are wonderful people, it was very comfortable to stay with them. They allowed me to use the kitchen, suggested tasty soup, local bread, beer, proposed to use the washing machine. I got my own key to come whenever I wanted. The house is nicely decorated inside and close to the train and bus stations.
Before I arrived I sent several messages to Melanie and she always replied to me and explained me everything. She picked me up at the station and she drove to her father´s place. We chatted for an hour and then she went to her house. She was very nice and helpful. I decided to change my reserve and she was very comprehensive. I should stay there almost 2 weeks and I left after the first night.
The house is like the photos show and it belongs to Melanie´s father. My recommendation is that if you are a woman and you travel alone, look for another place.
