We're on a beautiful, quiet cul de sac overlooking the brilliant ocean. The perfect place for peace, beauty and close to all the best beaches on the island.
We're on an acre of land enjoy yourselves and the view!. Remember you are in hawaii have a great time but do respect the neighbors.
I love this place. The view is amazing and the house is so comfy. Truly a special place. Once gain, the new BBQ rocks and I love the new fridge. I will be back again.
This is a wonderful place to stay – the house is larger than it looks in the photos and feels very spacious – comfortable furnishings, and good amenities, including a well-furnished kitchen, lots of beach and bath towels, and a new outdoor propane grill. Nice to be grilling with an ocean view! We enjoyed the lanai each and every day – morning bird and whale watching and lovely sunsets. Very enjoyable to be in a neighborhood and not a tourist area, yet it was a great location for getting to the best beaches. Lisa was a thoughtful and responsive host, giving us helpful information and checking on our stay. A few minor things – the second bedroom has a double bed and all the sheets were queen or king-size and it would be nice to have four beach chairs instead of two. We would recommend this house to anyone coming to the Big Island.
This was a great place with lots of space and a great view. It was just two of us, but we could have easily brought a whole family. We liked this location because it was in a nice quiet area, but still a short drive away from the beaches near the resorts, restaurants in Waimea, and small shops in Hawi. Lisa was really nice and Danielle greeted us upon arrival. Danielle was also very flexible as we had open ended plans and didn't know exactly what time we would be arriving at the cottage. You could also tell they were very responsive to past guests because there were heaters and an AC unit in the cottage even though the weather was so nice we didn't need them. We enjoyed the great views from the cottage; watching the sunset from the lanai and stars at night.
The ocean view from the patio is great! We loved to have breakfast outside.
The house is functionally furnished.
There is a wonderful botanical garden (Pua Mau Place) only 2 min. drive from the house. Lots of beaches are easy to reach.
Lisa was very good about communicating before my stay and while I was on the Island.
I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay. I noticed that you included privately more detail but thought I'd share (hope that's ok) - thanks again for the kind words & come back soon!
What M loved about your listing:
The house was lovely and had all the comforts I needed. The view is amazing and we can't wait to come back and do a little whale watching from the Lanai. Thanks for the AC it was great to use about 15 min before we hit the sack.
Kohala Cottage is light and airy, and it is an easy ten-minute drive to the best beaches on the Big Island. It is also within short and easy driving distance to Waimea (all the suburban comforts) and Hawi (Hawaiian charm + launch pad for zip line tours). It is located five minutes from Kawaihae, home to a little slice of funky Hawaii. A longer drive takes you to the relatively large town of Kona. The kitchen was well-equipped and we were able to cook and eat there.
Alas, there were two significant downsides, and if you think these will bother you, contact the honest host to see if they have been resolved.
First, there were a LOT of mice during our stay. We weren't bothered, but if you are, definitely check to see if the area-wide infestation has been resolved. During our three-day stay, we saw three dead mice in and around the house and many living ones scampering about. Our host, Lisa, was very proactive about warning us about the mice and even checked in during our stay. She will give you an honest answer.
Second, because this house faces west, while you get breathtaking sunset views, you also get breathtaking afternoon and evening heat. Apparently, Hawaii was experiencing a bit of a heat wave when we were there, so perhaps the house was unusually hot. Again, our host warned us about the heat and told us she had installed some air conditioners, even though running them is very expensive (all electric in Hawaii is very expensive). Sadly, we found the ACs pretty ineffective. The only thing that worked was opening the garage to allow breezes to course through the house. This left the back of the house vulnerable to furry visitors....
But if the mice situation has been resolved and/or if the heat is at normal levels, I highly recommend Kohala Cottage. Enjoy a poke bowl from Da Fish Shop or a shave ice in Kawaihae and some of the best sushi you will ever eat at Sushi Rock in Hawi. We took a snorkel tour from Kona and a waterfalls hike out of Hawi and watched the sun set every evening at Hapuna Beach. It was all easy from Kohala Cottage.
Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad that you adventured out and enjoyed so much of what kohala has to offer & yes, Sushi Rock & Da Fish House are amazing!!!
I am so very saddened to hear now that there was a dead mice/mouse, I would have sent out the cleaners immediately, if Dani or I had known...This is a really hard time for us because we are doing everything we can. Please come see us again and soon it will be whale watching ;-)
All my best,
The house is great, well equipped and in a lovely location.
However, during our time there was a problem with mice in and around the property.
