The Space

This Duplex in historic downtown Savannah was built in 1910 and renovated in 2006. It's homey & cozy, with simple comforts for those of us who don't need brass door knobs and chandeliers to be happy.
Both apartments have been converted to furnished BnB spaces. There are lock boxes outside the front doors for your convenience in checking in and out. They are both furnished very similarly with queen beds in each main bedroom. The living/dining and kitchen areas are combined in one large room. The kitchens are fully equipped with stove, refrigerator, microwave, cooking and eating ware. The bathrooms have a shower within the claw-foot tub. Bed linens & towels are provided.

We're strong believers in conservation of resources, recycling, & composting. So towards that end, the AC thermostat is set to 78 degrees, which is very comfortable in Savannah's hot summers. Any cooler than that and you go into shock when you step outside! And 68 degrees in the winter. If you want it different than that, we will be glad to come and set it for you.

There are compost bins to the left of the back yard behind the privacy fence- please no meat or dairy. The containers for trash (green) and recycling(yellow lid) are on the side of the house. We have a flock of backyard chickens, they love fresh organic greens, grains & seeds! You're welcome to gather eggs for breakfast & toss them a handful of sunflower seeds. They come running to the call of: "Here chick chick chick chi-i-i-ickens."

There is a train track nearby, but train runs only during the day (sometimes as early as 5:30a.m., but not predictably.) For a reasonably active person, it's an easy walking distance to all downtown sites of interest and businesses 1.5 Mile to river street taking the scenic route up Bull St., it's1/2 mile to Bull street. Also has handy access to public transportation Including a free D.O.T. shuttle & ferry boat system ((website hidden))

The street sweeper comes on Friday and Saturday nights on our street.. Saturday night is our side so park on the other side (it gets swept Friday night), or down the little dirt drive also across the road to the left if you're driving into the block, and to the left of the house if you're looking out from the porch. It's a $15 ticket.

Breakfast food provided are breads such as bagels & English muffins kept in the freezer for freshness and, in the fridge you'll find half & half, butter, jam, and you'll find tea and coffee in the cupboard.

Our favorite restaurants:

Breakfast-
Sentient bean Coffee shop
Clary's
B. Mathews
J. Christophers

Out Door Seating-
Vinnie Van Go Go's for best ever pizza- at City Mkt.
Firefly, Habersham St. (a bit pricey)
Tubby's on Riverstreet (ceasar salad)
Public, Bull St. (beautiful atmosphere)
Blue Turtle Bistro- seats by parking lot but food great!
Bohemian Hotel- top floor bar for sunset happy hour- Btw Bay & River streets

Indoors-
Green Truck for farm 2 table fare- vegetarian options on Habersham St.

Wifi available- code in "House Rules" on fridge.
Parking on street in front of house.

Guest Access

The front porch is a quiet, private hideaway overlooking the end of the dead end street. No heavy traffic noise and frenetic energy from passing cars!!Guests are able to enjoy a 650 sqft deck overlooking a spacious, forested back yard with free-ranging chickens, flower and food gardens.

Interaction with Guests

We love to greet our guests during their stay and find out more about them and any common affinities we may share. It's not a guarantee that we'll be around when they are, but if possible we like to meet all our guests at least once during their stay.
Also, my partner, David (Tree), has an outdoor adventure and expedition business( Earthrise Expeditions). He offers adventures to include sailing, kayaking, canoeing, outdoor and naturalist guided day and overnight trips to the surrounding islands, marshes and waterways. He is prepared to spend time, energy and experience as a naturalist, ecologist and outdoor adventure guide with those of you who are excited to go beyond the beauty, splendor and charm of Historic Savannah and into the natural world surrounding Savannah proper. He is open to co creating with you an experience long to be remembered and shared following your visits with friends and loved ones.. His pricing is open and negotiable based on needs and ability to pay.

The Neighborhood

What we love most about our neighborhood is that it's on a dead end stretch of Duffy St., many neighbors are long-term residents, some are students, and as a whole the neighborhood is very diverse in every demographic imaginable.

Getting around

It's a pleasant and easy walk to the hub of town, Park & Bull. From there it's a magnificent walk going north on Bull street all the way to the Savh river where you can catch a free ferry ride across the river and back.

Other Things to Note

We have tourist brochures, maps and info in the apartment for your convenience. If you'd like to leave some that you've collected during your stay, we welcome you to add to the collection.

My partner, Tree, also rents his RV on airbnb out behind the house- we have a very spacious back yard. So don't be surprised if you're not the only guests on the property.
PETS:
I charge a $25 non-refundable pet fee to defray the cost of extra cleaning time in regards to fur indoors and poo-patrol outdoors. If you're bringing a pet I'll add this charge as a "special offer" during the booking process. Dogs must be crated if left unattended in apartment. They also must be kept leashed out back if they could be a threat to the free-ranging chickens. Thank you for understanding!

  • Digs on Duffy was a great place for me and my friends to stay over the weekend. It was very homey. We loved the overall cottage-in-the-city feel of the place. We also loved the art work!It was nice to walk to the park and our new favorite coffee shop, "The Sentient Bean." I'd recommend this place to anyone looking for a place to stay in Savannah.

  • We enjoyed our stay at Kelly's sweet place in Savannah. The neighbourhood was quiet, and in easy walking distance of Forsyth Park. We appreciated the breakfast items in the fridge/freezer - very convenient - and the spacious back yard. The second bedroom is pretty small and not really set up for two, but is fine for a night. Overall, we had a great stay in Savannah - thanks Kelly!

    Response from Kelly:

    HI Anna,
Glad you enjoyed your stay and thanks for the review! Yes, the second bedroom is small, and is almost wall to wall beds when the second twin is pulled out from under the other. Don't know if you knew it was a trundle bed. /the second bed has to be rolled away during the day so you can access the back door. Hope you'll stay again!!
    Thank you!

  • Digs on Duffy-A is a unique setup on a quiet dead-end street just a little out of downtown Savannah. The unit (half of a duplex) has on-street parking in front with just a few steps up the porch to get inside. The kitchen was very clean and well equipped, as the host offered frozen English Muffins and bagels that could be toasted for breakfast. There are a number of very nice original feminine art drawings and painting around that reflect a great deal of talent and a whimsical imagination by the host's daughter (the artist).

This unit has two bedrooms, one double and one single that were comfortable. The single room seemed to need a bit of cleaning, noticed only when attempting to remove the sheets for laundry after being used a couple of nights. The bathroom had a caution sign about the frailty of the towel bars, advising not to put any weight on them as they could pull out of the walls. The tub is a lovely old claw-foot bathtub with wrap-around shower curtain and, while it worked fine, getting in and out could be a risky proposition given the caveats about not putting any weight on towel bars - to avoid slipping, one should hold onto the side of the tub and step carefully in and out as there is no grab rail to assist on the wall. Also, the support rungs on the chairs at the front room dining table tended to partially separate when just pulling out the chairs to sit in them, and they needed to be knocked back together so we could safely sit in them (and we are not big people).

  • Our stay at the Digs on Duffy was wonderful! Savannah is a beautiful city, and the Digs was a perfect home base. The neighborhood was great, everyone we met was very nice, and we felt very at home. We were there 5 nights, heard the early train only once, and never once heard the chickens from inside the house. The location was very central - it was not too long of a walk to just about everywhere in the historic district and the grocery stores - and the backyard sanctuary was a perfect place to relax after walking around Savannah all day. Thank you Kelly, we hope to return to Savannah again!

  • Quaint cottage on the outskirts of town.
Positives: backyard patio, easy parking outside, & not too far from architectural beauty of Savannah.
Negatives: r.r. line very close by which shook the cottage each time a train passed; rooster that started bellowing at 3 a.m. (rooster found better digs as he wasn't there Sat. night-Sunday morning), mattress in small bedroom could do with replacing, the a/c seemed to go off about midnight and the cottage became very warm/hot, 2 of the dining room chairs stretchers were out and table wobbled, the carpet mat in the living area was dirty.

  • We enjoyed our stay at Kelly's property, which was exactly as described. We were first-timers to Savannah so we spent a lot of time exploring the city and unfortunately, didn't spend a great deal of time at "digs". Wish we could have spent more time on the big back porch, but we also faced rain most of our stay. Kelly was great at communicating and answered my questions almost immediately. We were also fortunate enough to meet her and Tree while we were there. Hope to one day check out their new "digs" in Asheville once that property is up on Airbnb!

  • This was a great place to stay. I would definitely recommend it. The chickens and the yard make the Digs a unique and pleasant experience that I will not soon forgot. The apartment is just wonderful and the bed is so comfortable. The hosts were very friendly and had a very cute and sweet dog. I can't wait to go back some day!

  • Such a great, safe, and inviting place. Ample space, clean, comfortable, and a great location.

We only got to meet Kelly briefly because of our schedule, but she was warm and inviting. I wish we had longer to talk!

  • We had a fantastic Spring Break in Savannah at the Digs on Duffy. I agree with all the other reviews that Kelly has received. We were able to walk into town when the fancy took us, the house is clean and the furniture comfortable. The neighbors are really friendly and it was so great to not have to worry about breakfast when we got in late the first night. The cupboards had all those bits and pieces that you need but don't want to buy when you're traveling (like salt and pepper). What an affordable place for right on the edge of the historic district!

One thing I wished I had packed were ear plugs because I was in the back bedroom with the single bed. I can't complain and I wouldn't hold back a star on Kelly's rating because you are forewarned in her house description and by the reviewers about the train and the chickens. I just didn't adapt to being woken by the rooster and the chickens under the decking, and I am not an early riser by nature. None of the other girls were disturbed by them during our stay so I think you only need the ear plugs if you are in the back bedroom.

That said, I would still recommend this place for it's quality, location and great value. Kelly was really easy to work with and had prompt communication. All her thoughtful touches (like the breakfast foods and the collection of travel guides) made the house so welcoming. The lock box system meant that we had the flexibility to arrive at our own pace and as a group we could come and go during our stay without having to worry about access to the house.
