ABOUT THE AREA

You're going to live in the heart of Barcelona: El Raval.
As a town, Barcelona goes back to Roman times, around the 15 BC. It's four oldest neighborhoods, referred to 'The old town' or 'Ciutat Vella' are the result of the three expansions that followed that first Roman military camp. The Raval is one of them.
During the dictatorship and the democratic transition over 30 years ago, this neighborhood was considered to be the most dangerous in town. El Raval used to be historically infamous for it's nightlife and cabarets (Barcelona's Moulin Rouge is 15 minutes away), although it has changed significantly in recent years and due to its central location, it has become a minor attraction of Barcelona for tourist and locals alike. It is home to many bars, restaurants and night spots.
From the city's Olympic Games on 1992 onward, new services, activities and tourist, cultural and permanent artistic activities have been added to the ones the neighborhood already had like the National Library of Catalunya (5 min away).
Nowadays this is both a tourist and student neighborhood. On one hand it's close to the port and the beach, and all the central tourist attractions. On the other hand, it hosts four faculties, with thousands of students: the Faculty of Geography and the Faculty of History of the University of Barcelona. Also the Faculty of Physiotherapy and the Faculty of Media of the Ramon Llull University, where I studied, and which is only10 minutes away.
It's also a neighborhood of artists with the Public Cinematheque of Barcelona next door, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA) and the Contemporary Cultural Center of Barcelona, all 10 minutes away. They feature permanent expositions, workshops and galleries of artists and designers.
To complete the picture of El Raval, one can't forget that out of it's 50,000 inhabitants, half of them come from around the world, especially Africa, Asia and the Americas. This makes it the most multiethnic and cosmopolitan neighborhood in town.
