We arrived the the apartment complex and were quick to discover that this was being run as a hotel, but not by the front desk. The owner has multiple apartments and rents them out via different websites. This is not a problem, just nice to know because it usually means it will be a different airbnb experience. Our room was not ready, so he "upgraded" us to a larger room that was being "cleaned" as we entered. He did not speak any english, which is usually fine, except that in this case he was using a translator that was quite confusing. It told us we would be getting a discount that we never received. Also, the review he left us was very strange. "The handsome boy beauty." Nevertheless, he was very kind and tried his best to answer any questions we had. He was always respectful of the language barrier, trying really hard to make sure we understood what he was saying. There was a cash security deposit of 200 yuan (about $35) which is not expensive and we did get back, however, it would have felt better to pay the deposit via airbnb, which I am sure he will do in the future. The place looked like a dirty version of the impeccably clean photos. There was oil in one of the pans on the stove and grease covered all the cabinet handles in the kitchen. This almost made sense since there was no soap in the apartment (including dish soap in the kitchen). The downstairs wall a/c unit had a thick green grime all over it and smelled of mold. What had been cleaned in the apartment was cleaned with water at best. We know because we watched the end of this. On a positive note, the sheets in the bed and the bathroom were clean.
