Privacy and Good Peeps in NYC!

Apartment - Private room · W 133rd St, New York, NY 10030, United States

The Space

We have a beautiful and spacious fourth-floor 2-bedroom condo in Harlem, one room in which we rent out on a regular basis to responsible, mature adults who'd like a gorgeous place to stay while visiting Manhattan but think that paying $350 a night for a shoddy hotel is insane.

NOTE: If the dates you want aren't available on this listing, try our other listing (same home, different (email hidden)/rooms/1330646. We also have a beach house in Asbury Park, NJ, that might interest you. You can view (email hidden)/rooms/1466921.

Now back to your stay...

We're non-discriminating kind of people - we don't care what you look like - but we do expect you to be polite, clean and easygoing. We'd also prefer it if you didn't steal our stuff.

One thing you should know - we're a young, professional gay couple. (See that photo? We're A-mazing!) Not that that has any bearing on your stay with us, but we'd hate to turn someone away for being a bigot. If you're open-minded enough to accept that gays, in fact, do exist (and faaaaa-bulously!), then get in touch.

Also, we have a dog named Jaxon. He's quiet, super fun and very cuddly - and he'll expect you to love him just the same.

Your stay includes an air-conditioned/heated private room; fresh (and super soft) Ralph Lauren towels; access to our in-unit washer/dryer (FREE); flat-screen LCD/LED TVs (plus TiVo - we don't want you to miss your shows); board games and DVDs; FREE Wi-Fi; all the cereal you can eat (until we run out); FREE tea; in-room mini-fridge; and in-room coffee maker (coffee not included). The bed is a full-size futon/mattress hybrid; during the day it's a couch (we never put it up - we've forgotten how it works now) and at night it converts into the comfy bed you see in the pictures. Free street parking. Oh, and booze is on the house; we like to relax with alcohol. (Please drink responsibly and don't drink and drive. If we had a legal dept., they would totally tell us to tell you that.)

Sold yet? OK, we'll keep going.

We have a Wii that you can play, too. But we'll warn you - you might get schooled in Mario Kart and Trivial Pursuit. Seriously - we're probably gonna mop the floor with you.

Our condo is only two blocks away from the 2/3 express subway trains. We're within walking distance to Yankee Stadium and Columbia University, and you can be in Times Square in 15 minutes by subway. The apartment is easy to get to by subway from Grand Central, Penn Station and Port Authority. A cab ride from LaGuardia is relatively inexpensive (about $20), but the bus is even cheaper ($2.50).

There's a supermarket just down the street, along with bodegas for other convenience items on each corner. There's a McDonald's and late-night junkfood spots, like IHOP and Popeye's nearby. Just around the corner is an excellent French bistro with delicious food and can't-be-beat happy hours specials like $4 glasses of house wines and craft beers, nightly until 8 p.m. There are several health food, vegetarian/vegan establishments a stone's throw away.

P.S. We will be home during your stay. This will be a shared-space situation (the privacy part of the listing means that you'll have a private bedroom with lockable doors), but a fun, inexpensive one nonetheless. We've already met some pretty fantastic people from all over the world, so the bar is high; don't bring it down. Oh, and there are three flights of stairs to our apt. - with no elevator. But that's all right; you can do it!

Guest Access

Guests will have access to the entire apartment. You're welcome to lounge in the living room at the end of the day, make meals in the kitchen, and hop on the computer to print out tickets and boarding passes.

Interaction with Guests

We stay fairly busy so we're not always around to interact, but when we're here together it will be comfortable and friendly.

  • Mikey and his husband Earl were seasoned Airbnb vets. Mikey spearheaded the management and coordination. He was very organized, polite, friendly, helpful, and hospitable.
We are using Airbnb to get to know NYC better while we plan our move there. If we return to Harlem I would definitely stay with Mikey and Earl again. Regardless, I might hit them up next time I'm in town. :) Staying with them was a nice introduction to Airbnb.

  • As our very first time using "Airbnb", my friends and I were impressed, but most importantly, satisfied to have chosen Mikey and Earl as our hosts in their beautiful-stylish apartment in New York. Upon our arrival, we were warmly welcomed by Mikey, and he made sure we were comfortable and informed about the amenities that they provided. They answered all of our questions regarding locations and places we wanted to visit. Their apartment is located a couple blocks down from the subway; it takes 15 minutes to get to Times Square from there. We could not have chosen a better place to stay!

    Response from Mikey:

It was a pleasure to host you and your friends, Carlos. Look us up the next time you're in town. ;)

  • We really enjoyed our time at Mikey and Earl's place in Harlem! Mikey was a great host - welcoming and considerate, with lots of local suggestions to share. The apartment was warm and well decorated, and the room offered has everything you could need or want for a short stay. All of Manhattan is easily accessible by subway (the closest stop is 2 min from the apartment and midtown is only 15 min away!) yet the apartment is located in a rather quiet neighborhood. It really felt like we were coming 'home' in the evenings to relax after long days of running around the city!

  • Clean, Clean, CLEAN! That's first thing I noticed about Mikey's home. This is such an important issue wherever I stay. The home was lovely, modern and welcoming. It was also SECURE! That's another issue that's so important. Mikey was friendly, professional and not overbearing. The home was quiet in the evening and I loved access to the flat screen TV and cable. He also provided a binder for local eats and sights. I couldn't use it because my stay was very short. If I need to return to Harlem for a short stay, I will definately look this place up.

    Response from Mikey:

It was a pleasure to host you, Harold. I'm happy to hear you enjoyed your stay. Come back anytime.

  • Mikey and Earl's apartment is really great: fabulously decorated and the room is very comfy. We only stayed one night here in coming back from Boston (we planned two nights but unfortunately we had our flight dates wrong) but it is a great place to stay if you want to explore New York. Mikey received us and had plenty of tips on what to do and what to see (he has made an excellent guide with bars, restaurants, etc). Due to our short stay, we were (unfortunately) unable to use everything he is offering to its fullest (cereals for breakfast, etc). Nevertheless, nice play to stay, would recommend it.

    Response from Mikey:

The pleasure was ours. Glad you made it home safely. Keep us in mind for future trips. We'd love to host you again. Happy spring!

  • It was great to stay ther!!! Nice guys and it woud be a pleaser to see you again!!! Maybe in switzerland!!!! Greetings to NYC ;-)

  • Choosing to stay at Mikey's home over the weekend was a great decision me and my boyfriend made. Mikey was very easy to reach and answered all of my questions prior to the trip that by the time he greeted us at the door when we arrived, and gave us a quick rundown, I didn't have to ask anything anymore. The room came complete with a fridge, a book with maps showing nearby restaurants and groceries, a big flat screen with plenty of movies we could watch on our downtime, and free use of the rest of his home. We definitely enjoyed our stay here and feel like the next time we'd be back in NYC to visit, we'd end up at Mikey's again and not a hotel. Worth it hands down.

  • It was great to stay at Mikey's apartment! It's such a nice place, everything is clean and I felt at home from the moment I arrived. There was only the cute dog at home when I arrived but everything prepared for me. In advance I got a description how to get the key - perfectly organized! Mikey is a fantastic host and a very nice person. It's a pity we did not meet very often, because I usually came home too late ;-) Thank you, Mikey, I will be back - and hope to have a beer with you then!

  • Mikey is a great host and made us feel right at home! The apartment is very clean and comfortable and had everything we needed to feel comfortable. Mikey is also a great company and showed us interesting places close to their house. We also had a lot of good discussions and enjoyed our stay with them.

We're a fun-loving couple who enjoy meeting people from all over the world. Our apartment is clean, modern and, dare we say it, pretty darn fantastic. Forget what you've heard about Harlem, too. Our neighborhood is full of diversity, friendly people, and it's safe. I'm a tiny man, and I've never had one problem here. There are several parks nearby with excellent views of the George Washington Bridge, the Hudson River, the Harlem River, New Jersey and The Bronx. We love it here, and you will too!
