  • Theo is a gracious host, showing great flexibility in my accommodating my changing arrival time, several times. The unit itself, is pretty much brand new and quite attractive.

Unfortunately, I was very disappointed with the lodging for several reasons, and had to get a hotel room for my entire three-night stay in VT: 1) The "master" bed is a very low rollout with a thin mattress, which is completely unacceptable for my painful low back, 2) there is no air conditioner, or even a fan in the unit - my stay was during an extreme heat wave, and upon returning from dinner around 10 P.M., entering the house was much like walking into a furnace, 3) there is no cell phone access from inside the house, and the unit doesn't have a land line. In addition to my low back problems, I have several other serious, potentially life threatening conditions, making access to a phone critical, 4) while located on a charming dirt road, the house and driveway are not easy to find in daylight; after dark it's nearly impossible.

  • A beautiful out of the way and quiet place. Theo was very helpful and apt was very clean. A perfect beginning spot for our first New England vacay experience !! We'll be back.

  • Theo was a great host, and did everything in his power to make our stay comfortable. Unfortunately, the wifi and internet did not work... though Theo did try a variety of ways to get it working for us. I know it's something he is working on still.

The extension itself is very nice, and everything needed was provided for, including a refrigerator, stove-top, pots, pans, plates, cups, silverware and clean towels. Very peaceful and quiet location. Would definitely visit again!

  • Theo was a wonderful host. The place was spotless!! and he had everything set up for a comfortable stay. Clean linens, dishes and cookware, and coffee. We had a lovely stay.

  • We had a great time staying with Theo. His home and property are beautiful. The first-floor apartment is spacious, and has a back door that opens right out on to a creek. This is a very peaceful place. Theo was a friendly and gracious host. This is a great place to stay if you are looking to explore Brattleboro and southern Vermont, or if you are just looking for a place to relax.

  • Great place lots of woods, Snow Shoe right out the door. Skiing is close as well. Theo was up each morning before we were to ensure the driveway and walks were clear. He even threw sand across the driveway for us. Highly recommend.

  • Theo was a gracious and wonderful host. The woodland retreat is spacious and beautiful. During our stay, we enjoyed the peace and quiet, and the gorgeous woodland scenery. We took a hike up to a peak with 100 mile views in every direction. We cooked a lot in the kitchen, which, while small, was well stocked with equipment and we were able to make feasts. The stay was exceptionally comfortable. I highly recommend a visit to Marlboro Woodland Retreat.

  • We are an older couple and stayed at Theo's apt which was in same house as his home. It was extremely spacious, meticulously spotless and pretty much brand new. Theo is a master carpenter and his work is shown in this one bedroom apt. New coffee maker, dishes/silverware,small refrigerator and toaster oven were nice to have along with apt's thermostat. House is set back in woods off of the road. The cabin that Theo built is on the property also. Theo is a very quiet spoken man who is very down to earth and kind. The apt and property is very quiet also. Great stay.

  • Theo's place is even better than the pictures show - it is new, clean, and very quiet & relaxing. We were just amazed by the woodwork in the apartment - Theo has made it all by himself and it is absolutely gorgeous! Though a chilly night outside, the heating inside worked great and kept us warm. Also, the kitchen had all the basics plus a selection of teas and coffee was nice and definitely useful for a cool evening. As mentioned by another guest, the place could use some little touches like an area rug, curtains or paintings on the walls but this is definitely not a deciding factor and I am sure it will come with time! A little side note: there is no cable, no cell phone reception in the house (but you will find it a couple hundred yards up the road), and we could not get the wireless signal to work on any of the days during our 3 day stay. In all honesty, unexpected at first, but it turned out to be a lovely (somewhat rustic) experience away from everything. Just peace, relaxation, and no work calls or emails! :) Definitely would stay here again!

  • Theo is very welcoming and the apartment is a great stay during the summer months. It's very quietly located in the woods and has everything you would need, like a shower, stove, bedroom, table, couch, fully equipped kitchen...

We stayed in late September and it actually got a little chilly. Luckily Theo provides a small electric radiator, but if temperatures drop a little more, it will get cold. Having tiles only on the floor does not help to get warm.

The apartment itself looks exactly like shown on the pictures, since Theo had built everything himself, I'm sure he is not done decorating the apartment yet. Some pictures and a carpet will make a huge impact for the next season :)

    Response from Theo:

The warm weather took a change to rainy & cool and the furnace wasn't up & ready as yet. I had hoped the small heater would be able to take up the slack. I also think ceramic floor tiles are able to be kept cleaner than rugs.

I am an avid traveler having bicycled throughout the USA, Australia & New Zealand, camping as I went, growing sprouts and sourdough starter on the back of my bicycle. This apartment, house, cottage & greenhouse I built entirely by myself. I love doing various projects most dealing with sustainable living and alternative energy. I consider myself a carpenter / artisan, making furniture and art from found materials. I love living in the serenity of the woods, I know you will too.
