The Lower Haight was recently voted San Franciscans’ “favorite” neighborhood by a popular real estate blog. Here’s a closer look at this fun and funky place to live and hang out.
The Lower Haight is the blocks off of Haight that are west of Divsadero, south of Oak or Fell, north of Duboce, and east of Webster, Laguna, or Market.
Haight Street, of course, is known for its great mélange of retail establishments, bars and eateries, and art, both street scene and commercial. Lower Haight features more of the restaurants, watering holes and art establishments.
This is a neighborhood where people are out and about in the street at all hours, walking and talking, eating and cycling, skating and singing, hustling and bustling. You will get asked for spare change and there might be more felonious types of hustling going on in a nearby dark alley, but for the most part the Lower Haight has ditched its dangerous past and is a pretty safe place to be, as long as you’re self aware and smart.
Housing in the area includes apartments, subdivided old homes into duplexes and quad-plexes, and some single family homes.
Your neighbors will be a super diverse mix of singles, families and couples, primarily working class, most liberal and community minded. If you want to get to know your neighborhood and get involved, there are tons of cooperatives and non-profits that make it easy to do so.
Public transportation to and from Hayes Valley / Lower Haight is plentiful via Muni, and if you ever cycle The Wiggle – a bike route from the Mission to Golden Gate Park – you’ve passed right through the Lower Haight.
Life in the Hayes Valley /Lower Haight is filled with interesting experiences, new foods and good friends!
For all of our out of town people visiting for the first time
I recommend getting a Go San Francisco Card
Best deal is for a weeks pass with entry into all the cultural attractions
Also, get yourself a Muni Week pass or Safari Pass
for unlimited public transportation . You really don't need to rent a car in SF, its very Walkable
and if you do rent a car, the City has Carshare
Such as Zipcar /Citycarshare so if you are already a member, its a great deal
We kindly ask that when making inquiries on room availability

As much or as little as each guest wishes .
We do like to be friendly and welcoming to all that stay with us in our home and we expect the same in return .
We are on the Edge, literally and figuratively !
Being a Coastal City on the Western Edge of America , we straddle several of the most dynamic
neighborhoods in the City !!! We are right on the edge of Hayes Valley and The Lower Haight . We are also on the edge of Duboce Triangle, Castro
Mission . Hows that for a fantastic location ? All the best the city has to offer and more only steps away .
This is the best part , we are only a few short steps away from our local transit hub . Muni is our local
transportation line . As we are Centrally located in the geographic heart of the city , you can be anywhere in just minutes . The Closet major Stops for Muni are the Subway and street lines .
The "N" Line and "J" Line are at Church & Duboce and just a few more steps away is Market St and Church St, where you'll find the Muni Lines of K,L,M
You can be Downtown in (7) Minutes or Golden Gate Park . There are also several Muni Bus Lines . The # 22 Filmore, # 6, # 71 , # 24
Muni Fares are 2.00 USD (Exact Cash Fare only) and are good for return use for up to 90 mins . If staying for a few days , a week pass is your best value for getting around the city.
Street parking is available, however San Francisco has strict 2 hour time limits in most residential areas and metered parking also .
We recommend that you do not have a car , as it is more of a liability to have during your stay .
Rental cars are easy to access if you plan on venturing outside the city or for traveling further on . Zip and City Car share are also available .
Bicycles : San Francisco has its own Daily Bike rentals along with specialty bike rentals for getting around . Maps and Locks are included in most rentals . Its a great way to get to see most of the city .

I had a last minute week long work trip pop up in SF and I was so lucky to stay at The Webster! Joseph was an awesome host and the accommodations were lovely. Great location in the city, comfortable and clean bed/room, and charming decor in the house. Two thumbs up!
I had a wonderful stay at The Webster. It was the perfect accommodation choice for my first visit to San Francisco. However it is more than just accommodation - it is an experience in friendly, relaxed, San Franciscan hospitality, and this truly defined my impression of San Francisco.
The Webster itself is a beautifully appointed Victorian rowhouse in one of the most lovely areas of San Francisco. It is excellently situated close to the MUNI (train/tram services), buses, hip & trendy cafes and shops, and is an easy tram ride away from all the major attractions around town. The hosts are Joseph and David who are wonderful company. They are very proud of their home and care genuinely about the comfort of their guests.
Perhaps the most significant benefit in staying at the Webster was Joseph’s exemplary knowledge of all things San Franciscan. I arrived in San Fran a little anxious not knowing a thing about the city, what to do or where to go. I need not have worried. Joseph kindly came to my rescue. On my first night there he booked myself and another guest in for an evening at the Academy of Sciences and even accompanied us, giving us a personal tour of all the star attractions around the museum (Claude the albino crocodile is a must see!). Over the following week of my stay Joseph continually and generously shared an abundance of ideas on activities and sights around town. And if there was some thing, attraction or event that Joseph didn’t know about - he’d surely research and investigate it for me. When I travel to a new city I am always keen to understand the people, the culture and what makes its society tick. Ordinarily, gaining such insights about a place can be difficult and at best superficial. However, with Joseph you can learn all there is to know about what makes San Francisco the unique and wonderful city it is. Joseph is truly passionate about this city and it shows in his exceptional knowledge of its culture, history and people. I was particularly grateful for this.
I highly recommend The Webster. Come for the fabulous accommodation, but stay for the truly San Franciscan experience and wonderful hosts. You will always be looked after when you stay at the Webster. I will certainly be back. * 5 stars *
OMG, such a nicely written review , LOL
How can we thank you for all your kind words and thoughts , David and I are so grateful for it ! We hope we did make your stay/adventure to our city a memorable one and I can see that we successful . We truly try hard to make everyone's stay a special one , even if that means suggesting super secret private tours off the beaten path (no pun intended) Ha ! David and I will now have to brace ourselves for the impending Ozzy invasion .

PS the Video review will be forth coming , so stayed tuned to see the premiere of Jasmine Flashdance's adventure in San Francisco !!!!
Dear Joseph, this our report should start with a huge THANK YOU right away. Because our time in SFO had not been that great without your and David's help, advises and recommendations. And your place was just perfect!
Super stylish stay, with garden, large kitchen, huge beds and a very warm atmosphere. We felt at home from the first minute. Joseph and David are the perfect hosts which are taking it very seriously. This is no game, travellers are happy to find such places!
Talking about perfect: Webster 215 is perfect located for a nice dinner at nice restaurants, perfect located for a huge shopping trip at hayes str, perfect located to walk down the upper and lower haight, perfect located to walk to golden gate park. Perfect located to find anything we liked.
What we really loved where the nice exchanges and interesting informations Joseph has shared with us. This gave us a very deep impression of the real city life next to the touristic attractions.
We highly recommend this place for a fantastic stay and a deep dive into San Francisco.
That's the reason why we have already booked our next stay again at Webster Street 215!
All the best,
Monica & Thomas, Zurich/Switzerland
My stay with Joseph and David was perfect. The room was exceedingly comfortable with a huge bed, TV and lots of guide books and leaflets for various attractions. The house itself is in an ideal location, with easy access to transport and just round the corner from the shops, bars and restaurants of Haight St, with the Castro a 10 min walk away. I stayed for four nights, and if it wasn't for a hire car reservation I'd already made, I would have definitely stayed longer! Joseph's local knowledge was second to none; he was able to recommend a whole list of things to do and see - many of which he had done himself - which kept me busy for the whole four days, whilst also recommending great places to eat or drink which only a local would know.
Overall, Joseph and David were great hosts who went out of their way to make sure that my stay in San Francisco was memorable and enjoyable. I can't recommend their beautiful home highly enough as a great place from which to explore SF and enjoy it from a local perspective.
Joseph and the Webster were great for my stay. The house is charming and comfortable, with a very comfortable bed. Joseph was a very welcoming host--allowing me to check in at 10:00 am (when I arrived from a long flight) and walking me to the stop to catch public transportation. The neighborhood is convenient and full of fun cafes and restaurant, and Joseph seems to know them all. I would like to stay there again.
I had a good stay. The location is great and both David and Joseph were very helpful and responsive. Would stay again!
Review from my mum who stayed here for 10 days
A true home from home with attentive, welcoming and friendly hosts. Nothing is too much trouble for them in making sure you get the most out of your stay with them in the city. What more could you ask for.
Great location, great host, great stay! I loved this location. Walking to 2 MUNI lines within a few minutes, so all of the city is so close by. LOTS of really good restaurants/bars/shops. This neighborhood is full of life itself, and there are many other vibrant neighborhoods all within a short and interesting walk. Location couldn't be better.
The house was a really nice cozy eclectic place, that just evinced San Francisco authenticity. Street level, so no stairs to climb with heavy bags (!), very gentle sloping hills so no struggles getting to and from the house which is a blessing in this city. Tranquil charming patio in back that is lush and comfortable to enjoy coffee or wine.
The hosts. Absolutely great. Joseph is a wonderful host who has an encyclopedic knowledge of his city, and he is there for you if you wish to learn. He very generously and graciously took me on a walking tour of the area, more than once, outlining where various things could be found, infusing the walks with interesting local history and information. He even walked me to a dry cleaners as I needed some shirts laundered when I arrived due to being on the road for so long. The city should hire him as an ambassador! David was also around a little and is a wonderfully gifted conversationalist. Both of them are great guys, friendly, easy going, and enjoyable to be around.
So to summarize in a few words: Book it if you are considering it. I am very much looking forward to my next visit to "The Webster"!
I loved staying at the Webster! It feels like a real bed and breakfast, not crashing at somebody's apartment. Joeseph takes hospitality really seriously, and he made me feel at home not only in his BnB, but also in his city. The coffee is amazing (just don't drink too much of it) and so is the tea. Location is really great and the master bed is a dream to sleep on. 5 stars!
I stayed with Joseph and David for an entire week just after my daughter had a baby, using their home as a "base of operations". The location was perfect, since she lives right up the street. Although I didn't spend much time at the house, I was made to feel very welcome and I shared some enjoyable time with the hosts and other guests. The Webster is literally steps from Haight St and there are restaurants, markets, and coffee bars within easy walking distance. Parking is very tight, so I would not recommend bringing a car, but there is easy access to transit. Room is a bit small for the king sized bed, but the bed itself is extremely comfortable and wifi and TV worked perfectly. Bathrooms are shared but since there is only 1 other room rented I never had any problem accessing the bath or shower. Fruit, good coffee, and baked goods were provided each morning. Joseph is very quick to respond to inquiries and attentive to the needs of guests. All in all, it was like staying with friends--so much nicer than a hotel!
