My lovely, comfortable, cozy, quiet home in the Cedar Mill/Bonny Slope area west of Portland is a relaxing retreat while exploring beautiful Portland, the northern Oregon coast, and wine country.
My almost-empty nest is tucked away in quiet Cedar Mill, just 8 miles west of downtown Portland and the Pearl district, 75 miles east of Seaside/Cannon Beach, and a few miles north of Beaverton.
From the lovely guest bedroom (very comfy queen bed) with a private en-suite bathroom, step outside onto your secluded patio and soak under the stars in the hot tub nestled among wisteria, rhododendron, apple, cherry, fig, and Italian prune trees. I share the blueberry bushes with the birds and the raspberry bushes with the bees in my bird-friendly backyard habitat. No pesticides are used and only organic fertilizers and compost in the vegetable garden, so it's a pet-safe backyard. ***If you are inquiring about bringing your dog (no cats), please check my house rules.
I provide breakfast items for you - help yourself at your own convenience to freshly ground fair-trade coffee, tea, juice, toast, bagels or muffins, granola, and yogurt. During the summer the fruit is from my garden. If you prefer, you may enjoy breakfast on your own private patio. I love to bake, and I often have homemade muffins or breads to share - often with fruit harvested from my yard.
Relax with a glass of wine or craft beer while watching the sunset from my charming covered deck, or lounge on the wicker yard swing with a good book. Enjoy the fireplace (gas) in the living room, or cozy up around the fire pit on a chilly evening. I have plenty of seasoned firewood for your use.
From tips on where to hear the best live music to walking tours of the city and hills around Portland, kayaking destinations, zydeco, country, salsa, and ballroom dancing hotspots, happy hours, food carts, and terrific ethnic eateries, to tips on the best yoga studio in town...I look forward to sharing all that Portland has to offer.
You will also have access to my kitchen/family room, living and dining rooms, wonderful covered deck, pretty backyard, and private patio with hot tub.
We may have as little or as much interaction as you, my guest, would prefer. I have a bounty of tourist brochures, hiking trail guides, tour books and magazines, maps, and personal experience of the area to share with you.
My neighborhood, "The Bluffs," is a wonderful, safe, and supremely quiet suburban neighborhood. Parking is easy - right in front of the house or in the driveway.
Quick, easy access to major Portland highways as well as quick, easy access to MAX light rail at the Sunset Transit Center.
A couple of miles away is the Sunset Transit Center where MAX light rail whisks you around the Portland Metro Area. The Nike World Campus is three miles south, and Intel is about a 15-minute drive west to Hillsboro.
Within five miles you have access to over 80 miles of fabulous hiking trails in Forest Park, one of the largest forested urban reserves in the U.S.
Many Oregon vineyards are within a short drive, making for wonderful day trips around Washington and Yamhill counties, and the Red Hills of Dundee! Nearby are the Portland Audubon Society, historic Pittock Mansion, Oregon Zoo (with great summer concerts), and easy access to Portland's wonderful urban neighborhoods, craft breweries, and food carts. Farmers Markets abound from Cedar Mill to Beaverton and beyond.
I never got to meet Ellen, as she was traveling during my stay. However, her daughter was very helpful in getting me set up and answering any questions I had.
The room was just as in the picture, and the bed was beyond comfy ... very soft, lots of pillows! Having my own bathroom was a real plus. The house is welcoming and warm...every morning I sat at the lovely set table enjoying my breakfast while looking out to a back yard full of autumn beauty. Speaking of breakfast, Ellen made sure the fridge was stocked with the special yogurt I had requested ... what service!
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Ellen's, and hope to come again and meet her in person. She is a terrific host!
My fiancee, Harlan and I were in Portland for business for a couple days on short notice and were looking for a quiet, relaxed place to stay. This was our first experience with Airbnb and what a delight all the way around! Ellen is the perfect host(ess), so easy to work with and very accommodating. The bed is ethereally comfortable, the room quiet and peaceful, and Ellen's home is beautiful, clean and impeccably organized. Very fast and reliable Wi-fi (Harlan wanted me to add that information). Our deepest thanks and regards to Ellen, we are now hoping that the Garden Room becomes our go-to lodging when we next visit Portland!
Ellen is a warm and generous host. I recommend this stay to anyone seeking a quiet homey experience in Portland.
A gracious host! We had a wonderful stay with Ellen. The accommodations and amenities were just as described. We felt very relaxed and comfortable in her home. After spending our days tourist-ing in Portland, we looked forward to returning to Ellen's place ... and the very welcoming hot tub! We'll definitely return to Portland and Ellen's place.

Ahhh I just LOVED staying in the Garden Room! Where do I start... the bed is AMAZINGLY comfortable, the room was perfectly clean and cozy. The room has a sliding door that opens into Ellen's gorgeous, sun-splashed garden. The hot tub is perfectly clean and easy to jump right into after a day out on the town in Portland. There is a private bathroom right off of the bedroom (it is the master suite in the house) which was so nice to have. I brought my little terrier with me and she loved running around in the spacious, fenced in backyard. Ellen provides a delightful breakfast with french press coffee and sets your plate out for you at the dining room table. She was so kind and gracious, ready to chat about fun things to do in Portland. The location is west Portland, so it's an easy ride to vineyards and surrounding farm where you can pick berries. WONDERFUL, RELAXING EXPERIENCE, I highly recommend staying at Ellen's Nest.
Our host was kind, pleasant, gracious, flexible, and a clear and prompt communicator! Her home and the Garden Room were lovely and cozy, and she served up a delicious breakfast of yogurt, granola, fruit, coffee and other treats. We didn't want for anything. The best part for us is that the location just 10-15 minutes from downtown Portland made for a very quiet, peaceful stay after a busy day. With its own room, bathroom and entrance, you can come and go as you please - or visit with the host in the main part of the house. The yard is lovely and her garden is full of goodies that she was kind enough to share (fresh figs)! And of course, we were so happy to have our pup with us.
We had such a wonderful time in Portland! Thanks to Ellen for having us over, her house is a bliss, our room was clean and quiet and had everything one would need to spend a few days.
The hot tub was just what we needed after all the camping we had been doing.
The breakfast was nice and healthy (Ellen fed us with food from her garden!).
Ellen is more than a host and she was so very helpful. She gave us a lot of tips regarding the city of Portland. We'd love to go back there again for a longer period!
You won't be disappointed if you book her, it's just like the pictures!
Ellen was a really friendly host, our room was lovely in a nice quiet location and easily accessibe to Portland by car.
My aunt and cousin stayed at Ellen's place for three nights and they had a lovely time. Helen was very kind and even had some options for breakfast ready for them in the morning. She also provided some information and brochures about interesting places to visit in Portland.
We definitely recommend Ellen's garden room as a great place to stay!
