We and our dog Gus are lucky enough to live in a sunny apartment in possibly the best neighborhood in Brooklyn. It's actually a 2BR but we use one room as an office and for storage. (Up to 4 can stay - in addition to a queen bed in our room, we have a comfy couch and a great air mattress, which we can easily set up in the living room.) The apartment is spacious (by NYC standards!) and has a gorgeous working fireplace (hidden behind the couch in the photos, as we don't use it in summer) and a big sliding door that leads out onto a large terrace overlooking our shared backyard vegetable garden and yard.
The kitchen is big and open to the rest of the apartment, making it great for cooking with friends. I always leave coffee, tea, OJ, and bagels out for our guests to enjoy. We have a dishwasher and also a washer/dryer in the apartment, which you're free to use. The apartment is the whole top floor of a brownstone, and there are only 2 other neighbors in the building, who are lovely and have a very cute dog. Our landlord very occasionally stays in the studio on the ground floor when he's in town - you probably won't run into him, but he's a nice guy who also has a dog.
The other side of the apartment (where the bedroom is, opposite the terrace) has windows out onto Hicks Street. Hicks Street is next to the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, a major thoroughfare. The traffic from that is audible in the apartment, so if you are an extremely light sleeper our place may not be for you. We find the fairly steady white noise of it to be the least noticeable of any of the inevitable street commotion you'll hear in all NYC apartments, and most guests we've had have not been bothered by it. We supply earplugs just in case, though. The bedroom gets good light, but we have blackout curtains you can use if you like to sleep in a cave, like we do. The bedroom can get cold in the wintertime but the big cozy down comforter keeps us warm!
The bathroom is large and has great shower pressure and his-and-hers sinks. We'll have toiletries set out for you should you need them. There's wi-fi internet, a stereo system with ipod/computer jack and CD/record player, a fan available year-round, and in the heat of the summer we have an A/C unit in the bedroom. No TV though! We also have a Sodastream seltzer-maker, which if you're like me and obsessed with fizzy water is a huge plus.
We love having friends over and hosting dinner parties, and everyone always says our house feels to them like a bright clean boat or a cheerful bungalow. We think that sounds about right...we love coming home to our place and know you will too.
The terrace faces other neighbors' gardens and overlooks our shared backyard, which is full of plants and raised beds with veggies growing! Our terrace has a gas BBQ, a glass-topped table for alfresco dining, and lots of flowers and fresh herbs in pots, which you are welcome to use if you choose to cook.
We love it here. There are awesome bars, restaurants, shops, grocers, a Trader Joe's, two movie theaters, several performance spaces and art galleries, a riverside park with kids' play areas, several farmer's markets and Smorgasburg (look it up - it's amazing), dog park & running/biking trails, and the ferry to Governor's Island just a beautiful, tree-lined 5-10 minute walk away from our door, plus Bonafide Deli on the corner for last-minute needs. We're very close to DUMBO, Red Hook, Carroll Gardens, Fort Greene (home of the Brooklyn Flea, the best flea market of all time), and historic Brooklyn Heights which is chock-full of stunning brownstones, huge old trees, and a beautiful promenade with incredible views of the Manhattan skyline. You could seriously fill your stay here just by exploring the immediate area...but getting into Manhattan is easy too.
It's a quick 10-minute walk to the F & G subway lines and a 15-minute walk to C, 4, 5 lines. All lines are a 10-minute subway ride into Manhattan, and if you drive there's on-the-street parking easy to find nearby. I have subway and bus maps available for your use as well, and refillable Metrocards so you don't have to pay the $1 fee to buy a new one.
We'd love to have you - I know you'll love it as much as we do!

Cozy apt with authentic experience of NYC was found. Easy breezy finding the apt, folks at Bonefide deli were helpful and most tasty lox /bagels. Neighborhood was walking distance to an assorted shopping, subway transportation and beautiful parks. We stayed on the go and really found peace back at cozy (website hidden) part was hanging on the terrace for coffee talk in the early morning and unwind in the evening with lights of the courtyard! Very quaint, suited our weekend in NYC to the tee. We will definitely stay at this location again!
We had a very comfortable stay - the patio was a real plus. Also very convenient as our new grand daughter lives only 2 blocks away and the Cobble Hill stores and restaurants are nearby - all very walkable.
We really enjoyed our stay at Alex & Sarah's. It really felt like a home from home. The area is really interesting and there is lots to discover within easy walking distance, but we also found it very easy getting into Manhattan either walking the Brooklyn bridge or by metro. There is noise from the BQE as mentioned by others who stayed, but it really wasn't a problem and we got quite used to the rumbling every now and then. It's a charming apartment, great facilities, coffee, washing, Wi-Fi etc. I'd really like to stay again when it's warmer to make proper use of the outside space. It was my first Airbnb experience and I think it has changed how I travel in future for good, no more crummy, soulless hotels.
We liked this place very much and will use it again. It is a bright and spacious apartment and the hosts are very thorough and considerate in such things as helping to navigate Brooklyn and NYC, lap blankets in the living room, or lots of books to enjoy. Guests have access to a full kitchen, and a few essentials are provided for a hot beverage or quick morning snack. The apartment does sit next to a busy highway, but we found it easy to ignore the highway drone. The neighborhood is comfortable. The subway is a modest walk away.
The place was really comfortable and located walking distance from a TON of cool places. I didn't have any issues with noise from the BQE. They had a fan in the bedroom that drowned out any noise. All in (email hidden) to stay. I plan on trying to get the place next time I come up too.
We had a great time at Sarah and Alex's apartment. Everything was just as described. The apartment feels like a place in the country. After coming from the airport, it is really nice to be able to have the food left for us on arrival. The expressway is a constant presence (the apartment vibrates a bit) but this in no way spoilt our excellent weekend stay.
The reservation was canceled 32 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
Absolutely wonderful. The neighborhood is beyond safe. The apartment is perfect. And the hosts are gracious. Can't wait to stay there again.
My wife and I spent a wonderful four days in Sarah and Alex's apartment. It is bright and sunny, very comfortable, and very convenient. The coffee set-up was very much appreciated. The patio was very (email hidden) to wind-down after a day of sightseeing. We would stay here again without a doubt. Thank you Sarah and Alex for your hospitality!
Sarah and Alex's apartment is a great spot for living the Brooklyn life. A 10 minute walk along tree lined streets will bring you to dozens of eateries, upscale markets and the subway to Manhattan.. a taxi is even easier. Stock up on groceries, then head back to your attractively planted terrace to sit back and admire your private interior garden view. It is one of the finest I have seen. This apartment is super clean, has a well stocked kitchen for cooking, a comfy couch in the living room, a firm mattress in the bedroom and great books. I did not see my hosts as they were out of town. The keys were left at a local deli and pick up went without a hitch. All the instructions were concise and I was able to communicate with both Sarah and Alex thru promptly returned emails. I feel that I as a trusted reviewer I have to say something about the traffic noise. The Brooklyn Queens Expressway is a 24/7 major thoroughfare and runs below street level, just over the railing on the other side of the street from the front door of this 3 story, historic building. You will hear it, you will feel it.
Thank you S & A for providing a safe, clean, charming apartment for my long weekend in NYC.
