Come relax up in Topanga & get away! 1 Bedroom Guest House located in the Heart of the canyon for nightly & weekly rentals! The entire property has waterfalls, ponds & a tropical themed environment. The guest house has 1 queen sized bed & can accommodate a maximum of two guests comfortably. There is also a kitchenette with mini fridge, stovetop, complete with coffee maker & filters, dishes/pots/pans & washer/dryer on site (the washer/dryer is for stays of 5+ days).
1 carport parking spot is available, along with extra parking along the road. The road is paved, but has no sidewalks alongside.
CELL PHONE & INTERNET:
Wireless internet is available, along with a cell signal booster. Reception can be spotty up in the mountains, and is not guaranteed; although most all guests have not had issues.
Topanga is a charming, countryside neighborhood adjacent to Los Angeles & very safe. I've lived here for over 30 years, and never had any issues.
My house is about 15 minutes drive from Santa Monica, 20 minutes from Malibu & 15 minutes to Woodland Hills, 30 minutes to LAX. Without traffic, I'm about 35 minutes from Hollywood, 40 minutes from downtown, 25 minutes to West Los Angeles/Culver City. To get a better idea of commute, I'm central in Topanga, so if you check a map for Topanga, CA & get directions from there, you'll be able to estimate distances.
ARE THERE ANIMALS ON THE PROPERTY?
No. I do not allow any animals in the guest house, nor are there any on the property (for those of you with allergy concerns). For those who need petsitting: LADogma is a great local option where dogs stay comfortably in a home in Topanga. Just look up "LADogma" for more info.
IS THIS A FAMILY RENTAL?
My rental is Adults Only - No children of any age allowed (including infants)! Due to a unique property structure, with many uneven stairways, ponds, firepit, size of guest house, etc., I remain firm on my policy of (2) adult guests maximum per stay. Many families try to message me asking for an exception; but I do remain firm on this rule, due to liability & safety concerns.
I'm happy to host just parents for a romantic getaway, though!
There are several long flights of stone steps leading up to the guesthouse. This shouldn't be a problem for most people (and i'm happy to help with luggage), but if you have trouble with stairs, this may not be the place for you. I've had multiple pregnant women manage the stairs late in their term, but these stairs may also be a concern for pregnant women on bed rest.
Sheets are 100% cotton, 600 thread count - I use all natural laundry detergents, for those of you with allergy concerns! I also provide organic soaps, all cotton towels & robes. Please do let me know if you have allergies though, so I can be extra scent-sitive!
If you'd like this to be a surf getaway, I'm happy to loan you one of my boards with your security deposit acting as collateral! I have kayaks & stand-up paddle boards available for use - but note that you'll need a truck or SUV to get them down to the beach (I don't allow guests to tie the boards to a standard car). I've been surfing & diving for many years locally, and would be happy to give you some pointers on location, etc..
If you are a photographer looking to use my property as a location for a shoot, please note that I don't include shoots as part of a "package" deal when staying at the guest house. If you try to sneak a shoot on my property, this will result in a negative rating and/or loss of security deposit!
Please mention any relevant photography in your message, as I would require that we arrange a shoot outside of AirBnB. I use my properties as locations, so a location fee would be required, along with standard insurance, etc..
If you'd like to take a few casual snapshots on my property for strictly personal use, that's fine.
outdoor bathtub, indoor stone shower, wireless internet, satellite television, outdoor firepit, HD flat screen TV with DVD player, microwave, toaster oven, stove top, mini fridge, kitchen with coffee maker/filters/tea, dishes & pots & pans, towels, shampoo & body wash, hot tub with crystal fireplace, BBQ, year-round springs & waterfalls, filtered water, tropical gardens surrounding guest house, large decks & patios, great views, stone tiles, outdoor bed for napping, hammocks, 1 car carport parking, & more.
Interaction with Guests
The guesthouse is a stand-alone unit, completely private & faces a large private lawn with private firepit (as shown in the photos). The hot tub is private use, from 10 am to 10 pm. I live on the property, remotely & away from view of the guesthouse, but am reachable by phone call. Many couples stay at my property for romantic getaways & sometimes I do not see them for the entire weekend, unless they call on me for assistance. Tenants who live on site will not interfere with your privacy, all amenities including lawn & hot tub are reserved for your use during your stay.
If you call me, I will come down & start a fire or BBQ for you! I interact as little or as much as guests like - Some people like to spend their entire time secluded, and I only appear to give a property tour. Other people who have stayed hung out with me & we've had some BBQ & talked about life around the fire. My level of interaction depends on your preference!

LOCAL POINTS OF INTEREST:
AirBnB does a great job of covering Topanga! Check out their location guide here: https://www.airbnb.com/locations/los-angeles/topanga
Topanga State Beach is an 8 minute drive & Topanga State Park is about a 5 minute drive. In Topanga, there are many hiking trails, some with eight thousand year-old Indian caves & waterfalls.
Mimosa Cafe is the village coffee shop, which is a 10 minute hike down the hill. Just across the way from Mimosa, there is a natural foods store & a little mini market. Santa Monica & Malibu are a beautiful 15 minute drive along Pacific Coast Highway.
Suggested local restaurants would be Inn of the Seventh Ray, Froggy's & Cholada Thai food. Great restaurants in Malibu are Geoffrey's, Nobu Sushi & Cafe Habana.
The closest large grocery store is a Von's Market, located on Sunset Blvd. There's also a natural foods market & deli in Malibu, named PC Greens. Additionally, a local raw smoothie & juice bar has opened recently, about a 5 minute drive from my place called Fresh in Topanga!
there is no public transit in Topanga Canyon -- you will need a car! The closest public transit is the MTA line 534, which runs along Pacific Coast Highway.
Two adult guests per guest house maximum (no children of any age allowed, this also means no infants) -- NO SMOKING OF ANY KIND anywhere on property, due to fire hazards/tenant concerns, no pets.
Washer/Dryer is for guests with stays of 5+ days. Please inquire if you are a longer-term guest about where laundry facilities are located.
Two night minimum stay, no pets. For a 1 night stay, please message me for further info. Those are available for $225 a night + a one time $55 cleaning fee. I am not able to go any lower on this fee.
If you'd like to invite guests over, check in with me in advance. I have other tenants who live on the property & I'd like to be aware, in case one of them is concerned! I only allow 2 people overnight in the guest house.
Jacuzzi hours are until 10 pm. Please keep all noise levels low after 10 pm, to respect other tenants on property.
Do not start any fires or BBQs without my assistance. Call me when you'd like to light a fire or start a BBQ. No candles, incense or open flames of any kind unless approved by me.
If you'd like to take a few casual snapshots on my property for strictly personal use, I'm fine with that! If you are a photographer, blogger, etc., please read below.
If you are a photographer looking to use my property as a location for a shoot, please note that I don't include shoots as part of a "package" deal when staying at the guest house. If you try to sneak a photo shoot for something professional/published on my property, this will result at very minimum a negative review!
Please discuss in advance photography that is not for private personal use. I use my properties as locations, so a location fee would be required, along with standard insurance, etc..
The place is definitely much more amazing and beautiful in person! We had a nice stay and Darrel was very accommodating. We had an ant problem in the bathroom when we first arrived, but he came over right away and fixed the problem, didn't see another ant the entire weekend. It was a perfect little getaway. The bungalow and grounds were incredible, especially the teepee! So cool. I would definitely stay there again!
The only way I can describe this bungalow is that it's like you are in a fairytale! As soon as you step on the property you feel as if you are in a tropical resort. The bungalow itself is perfect for a couple. The recliners are so comfortable that we want to buy some! The bed slept great and we had everything we needed. In fact we decided not to go out our last night in California just to hang out at the property because it is truly magical at night with the lights, swings, hammocks and hot tub. I really can't say enough to describe the amazing time we had! Wish we could have stayed longer and we will be back!
-Reservations and communication was on point. Darrell greeted us as we drove in, helped us with our bags, and gave us a full tour. The property is so interesting and full of detail at every corner. I noticed something new in every passing moment.
-The room/hut/bungalow itself was small and cozy which fit us nicely. It was modern, but with so much unique detail (to fit the pirates of the Caribbean theme). I was so inspired!
-There are other tenants around the property. In one way it feels secluded because there are beautiful trees and plant barriers around. But, it's not the type of secluded naked privacy that a romantic getaway calls for outside of the bungalow itself. The highlights below capture more of the space...
-Felt like "glamping" (camping with the luxury of a bed, electricity, a shower, fridge, sink, stove, etc.) in such a unique home
-It included small considerations that go a long way - coffeeeeee:) huge movie collection, toiletries that we may have forgotten including sunblock, lotion, hairspray, toothpaste, shampoo/ conditioner, and more. Also, super cozy blankets and OHHH the recliner chairs. Those were luxurious!
-Variety of unique seating around the lot, some of which hovered over a calming stream of water
-Firepit (for roasting marshmallows of course)
-Location is in the heart of the canyon and super close to the beach
-Darrell was available and responsive (but doesn't by text).
-I didn't ask Darrell how late or early we can call if we need help. Since he doesn't text, you should probably ask what his preferred call times are b/c it just makes it clear and would make you more comfortable to call with that knowledge. You know... it's easy to get used to rapid text responses in this digital world:)
-Temporary odor (taken care of): Once we settled in and got cozy on the luxurious recliners we got small whiffs of what smelled like urine. My gf couldn't smell it much, but I'm sensitive to these kinds of smells so it was frustrating and constant for me. I dragged this on longer than needed b/c I started off by cleaning the floor myself which didn't fix the problem. As soon as I called Darrell he was apologetic and cleaned the entire area including underneath the couch. POOF! Problem fixed. He explained that the previous guest may have left the door open so an animal could have snuck in. It put me at ease to know what the source likely was and I was able to continue enjoying the stay. I appreciated the extra effort to explain.
WORTH A RETURN?
I'll probably make my way back here at some point. I would recommend this place to friends and (website hidden);DR: Fun place to stay, semi-secluded/ not private, host is responsive and welcoming
The place is absolutely beautiful, even more than the pictures. There are so many tiny details that it is hard to really do it justice! An incredible place to stay and relax, with lots of areas to chill out, read, eat or watch movies. It was like another world, we loved it. The location is extremely remote, so be sure to pack lots of provisions! Would definitely stay here again.
About the Host, Darrell
I'm Darrell -- native to California, I own an antique & vintage clothing store in Topanga Canyon. I enjoy spending time surfing, spear fishing, diving, snorkeling, traveling, storytelling & generally spending time outdoors. I also enjoy a good movie -- my favorite is the Indiana Jones trilogy & Avatar.
I've lived in Topanga Canyon since the 70s & have spent many years creating an environment where I want to spend as much time as possible. I love visiting any place tropical & wanted to live in Hawaii, but decided to create my own tropical escape here. My place is like a combination of the Swiss Family Robinson & the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland.
I enjoy meeting people from all over & I often host small BBQs with my tenants who also live on the property. I'm an easy going host & live in a treehouse on site, so I'm available if you need anything! If you'd like to share a meal or hang out around the fire, I always enjoy hearing stories from new people.
