Treehouse at Kilauea Volcano

Treehouse - Entire home/apt · PO Box, Volcano, HI 96785, United States

The Space

Mahinui Na Lani hangs in ohia trees growing over a lava tube in the rainforest that extends into Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The treehouse was conceived as a companion to our rainforest pavilion, a Bali style structure a couple of blocks away, intended as an intimate wedding venue. The pavilion often hosts other parties, especially tiki parties. Both may be reserved, and there are a couple of photos of the pavilion included in this series.

The treehouse is accessed via a path that is about 100 meandering feet in the forest, lava boulders set into the side of the lava tube, and ladders. The ascent is somewhat steep once you reach the lava rocks. For your safety and comfort, we provide day packs to transfer whatever clothing is needed for your stay from your luggage into the abode. There is a special recessed corner dedicated to your stuff, with hooks for clothes, and a couple of night stands with drawers that can hold less bulky items. It's Hawaii, and the climate is mild, the atmosphere everywhere very casual. We also provide bathrobes.

The treehouse itself is built on two levels, connected via a ship's ladder. The main level includes the living room, with two chairs and an ottoman, flat screen for viewing films & playing CDs, built in indoor window table & stools, small kitchen, outdoor shower, and composting toilet & vanity. The indoor fireplace is a Jotul propane stove vented to the outside. Outdoors on the lanai there is a cedar hot tub, and a teak table and chairs for al fresco dining in the trees. The upper level is also upper canopy, with birds actually flying around beneath you sometimes. There is a queen sized bed with a memory foam mattress, the tiny "closet corner" and another lanai. The windows other than the french doors onto the lanai are stained glass, made by a local artist.

The house was built primarily of recycled materials. The fir floors and redwood and cedar siding were once a church. The strong support beams had a prior incarnation as a parking structure.

This particular area is adjacent to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where Kilauea has been active for decades. The lava viewing opportunities change day to day. There are hiking trails in and around the park through rainforest, desert, volcanic devastation, even a path with footprints preserved from an eruption over a hundred years ago. There are petroglyphs. Less than a mile from the treehouse there is Volcano Village, with restaurants and art galleries, a couple of places to buy gas. The entrance park itself is about two miles away. The neighborhood is rainforest, with many unbuilt upon lots. The reason there is no view of the treehouse through the forest is because the rainforest is very dense. There is the floor, very jungly with ginger, native ferns, and trees. Mid canopy are the tree ferns, some twenty feet tall, and over a hundred years old. The upper canopy is a mixture of ohia trees with red lehua flowers, Hawaiian holly, and others. At the pavilion, there are dozens of Sugi pines. This rainforest has over 20,000 species found nowhere else on the planet.

  • This is a fantastic place to stay. Be sure to stay more than one night to benefit fully from this incredible setting. The path to the house is beautiful and secluded. The outdoor shower is wonderful, as is the hot tub. Everything was perfect.

  • Three house was super cool. Definitely as awesome as expected and close enough to some small businesses and a great Thai restaurant that you wouldn't have to go too far for dinner. We loved the small set up, the hot tub was heated daily for us and the proximity to Volcano National Park made it a pleasure!

  • The Treehouse was a dream-come-true unique and beautiful place to stay.

My wife has always dreamed of staying in a treehouse, and we just enjoyed this place so much. The pictures are accurate, but you really have to be there to take in the peacefulness of the site and beauty of the overall property. Very clean as well as cozy too.

We stayed here two nights after arriving from Hilo. We were so happy here and could have easily stayed at least a couple nights (or weeks) longer! Hanging out at the Treehouse reading a good book makes for a perfect afternoon.

The Treehouse is like 5 minutes away from the amazing Volcano park and hiking trails.

  • Waking up on a bed that is as cozy as the biggest hug from a best friend or lover, after an evening loosening up in a cedar wood hot tub. In an artist touched wood and bamboo tree house warmed by a gas fire stove, nested in a rainforest on the side of an active Volcano is tops!!! I mean really this place does exist! A must try I must say.
I highly recommend this stay. From the great personal and quick communication to the glorious tree house and gardens, everything was as lovely as can be. Mahalo Gail, Robert and Rose!

  • We stayed four nights at the treehouse, sandwiched between stays at two different resorts. It was a wonderful break from more "touristy" areas of Hawaii. We loved the feeling of living among the trees, listening to the birds in the early morning, and enjoying the hot tub in the afternoons. We used the treehouse as a base to explore Volcanoes National Park, and took several wonderful hikes in the park. The house had pretty much everything we needed to thoroughly enjoy our stay there. I would recommend a stay of 2-3 nights for most travelers, particularly those that enjoy a more active, adventurous vacation. Gail is quick and professional, and Rose & Noe who helped care for the treehouse during our stay were also very friendly and attentive.

  • This home delivers everything as you imagined it to be! If you want to stay in a luxurious treehouse, this is the place. Gail, the owner, is very prompt, responsive, and helpful, as well as very kind and sweet! The home is full of gorgeous artistic features and lovely plants. Every corner, every wall had something you just had to get a better look at. The bed and furniture was incredibly comfortable and warm. The kitchen had everything you might need. The whole place was amazingly thought out. The views are breathtaking! Fantastic decks upstairs and downstairs. Awesome to sit in a hot tub up in a tree, looking up at the stars through the branches. Private and cozy, this was the perfect choice for our final Honeymoon location. Also, a really wonderful location. We would be very happy to return!

  • The treehouse is amazing. And so well done! The site is very easy to get to and just down the road from the National Volcano Park. Make sure to make a night visit. We hope to come back!

  • Originally I only booked the tree house one night and added a 2nd night based off of Mahinui's recommendation and I am very glad we did. The tree house is in a great location. Super close to Volcanoes National Park. There is a lot to explore in the park so one night does not give you very much time to enjoy the uniqueness of this place. We loved staying here and would love you come back. Thank you for sharing your tree house.

  • The Treehouse is an amazing stay, definitely recommend it! The on-arrival support was outstanding, everything was coordinated well/smoothly. A great place to relax, of all the places stayed at during our 3 wk trip the time spent in The Treehouse was by far the most laid back and enjoyable. Super comfy bed too, best sleep I've had in a long time!

About
Aloha. My husband Robert and I offer a Big Island wedding destination near Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. We offer a full service wedding, with everything from the conch shell blowing to the honeymoon at the treehouse, and photography too. We have two property locations. One contains the treehouse, and the other the wedding pavilion and main house. The main house can serve to stage the wedding and it can also house guests of the bride and groom. For the photography, we go to places on the island that are particularly photogenic. We offer this service to both those who married with us and those who are married elsewhere and come to the Big Island to honeymoon. For an up close and personal view of what we do, you may visit us online at Rainforest Weddings on (website hidden). There you will find photos, updates on what is going on here on the island, and comments from people who have been (email hidden) Lani. Mahinui Na Lani was recently featured on MTV Extreme Cribs. The treehouse was featured on the Today Show, and has been written up in Keola Magazine. Forbes has mentioned it in an article about our builder, Roderick Romero. We also work with other amazing Big Island venues if you are looking for a larger wedding celebration. We welcome any travelers who are seeking a wonderful place to stay on the Big Island. Aloha!
