Large, sunny bedroom and shared kitchen and bathroom in a quiet neighborhood. Close to public transportation, and walking distance to cafes, stores, grocery stores, restaurants, etc.
I am offering my spacious, sunny living room for short stays in the bay area. It is a semi-private room, with curtains separating it from the kitchen (which you have access to) and a pull-out double bed futon. There are no doors to the room you will stay in but you are free to close the curtains for privacy. Other amenities include a deck, beautiful garden and wireless internet. The apartment is on the second floor of a 4-unit building, with lots of natural light, plants, and a window seat that looks out onto a pretty and quiet street in a safe neighborhood. Please note: There are many stairs up to my apartment so if climbing stairs is challenging, this may not be the place for you.
The apartment is four blocks from Lake Merritt, a very popular place to walk, run, picnic, kayak, or just watch the sunset from. Parking is always easy to find on the block and there are numerous city buses that are within walking distance. It is easy to get to the surrounding sights and cities of Berkeley and San Francisco. There is also Trader Joe's (grocery store), Walgreens, restaurants, laundromats, yoga studios, cafes, the historic Grand Lake movie theater, and a number of stores within walking distance. This neighborhood has a diverse array of International cuisine to choose from - Thai, Ethiopian, Indian, Vietnamese, Chinese, Mexican, Cuban, Italian - all delicious! We are also about 15 minutes from the popular monthly event "Oakland Art Murmur/First Fridays", showcasing artists and local culture on the first Friday of each month.
The apartment is quiet and clean, with a comfortable pull-out futon, a bathtub, a dinner table and chairs. There is wireless internet, no TV, but there is a large screen to connect a computer to if you want to watch something on your computer and speakers to connect a computer or mp3 player to.
The garden gets sun all day and is a welcoming place to have breakfast or lunch, read a book or sunbathe.
I invite you to enjoy the serenity of my home, so please no parties, including hard drinking or drugs. This is quiet and peaceful place to rest, create, work, and explore the area from.
Please no pets and no cigarettes.
This is a no-shoes home. Please remove your shoes after entering.
I work from home most days so I'll probably be home while you are staying, and we will share the use of the kitchen and the bathroom. I am relaxed, down to earth, and an experienced traveler who enjoys meeting people from all over the world and all walks of life. I'd be happy to give recommendations or advice about the area and things to do, as I have lived in the bay area all of my life.
Please note: this is a vegetarian kitchen. No meat prep permitted. Please clean up after yourself in the kitchen. Thank you!
Guests have access to the kitchen; pots, pans and dishware. Only vegetarian cooking permitted. Also there is access to the garden.
Interaction with Guests
I'll be home to greet you and look forward to meeting you, hearing a little about why you're here and what you do in life besides travel! I am often home during the weekdays, and out during the weekends. I enjoy friendly, short conversations but also respect privacy and quiet time.
There are several bus stops within four blocks of the apartment, taking you to the BART station (to go to SF), downtown Oakland, Berkeley and other surrounding areas.
Respect the home, plants, furniture and neighbors by maintaining cleanliness, treating things with care and keeping noise level low after 10pm on weekdays/11pm on weekends.
Quiet hours M-F 10pm to 9am, S-Su 11pm to 9am.
The room comfortably sleeps 2. Another person can sleep on a camping pad on the floor or squeeze onto the window seat. You can bring an extra guest (only 1) if you check with me before you make your reservation. There is an additional fee.
No pets, no cigarettes, no drugs.
Shoes off in the house.
Vegetarian kitchen - no meat prep or cooking permitted. Thank you!
Children over 5 are welcome! Because the apartment is on the second floor, there is no running or jumping allowed at all.
Eva was a very kind host! She was a great communicator and you get to enjoy her art hanging in the apartment. My phone did not seem to always like her phone (apparently my phone is shy in Oakland sometimes), so the great communication was even more a plus and even more of a feat! She checked in on me to see if things were comfortable, and she asked me right when I arrived about if she could get a few things out of the room for an appointment that she had a few days later, rather than asking me the day of (which would have been fine too) - very impressive! She was very kind to let me do some cooking since I was there several days. She just got a new floofy bed pad so you will be very snuggly. My back is not traditionally good with futons but in the hurry of my travel arranging I missed that this was a futon, and for the first several days you totally won't even notice! If you have a sensitive relationship with futons and you are staying more than 3 days, just ask if you and she can re-floof it together. It's so snuggly! Also there is a great heater if you need it - I am tiny but barely needed it at all.
Also, this home was Very well feng shui'd. You have two walls of windows, too, and you have good options in terms of going with dark or going with light (they all have good shading). I was using the front entrance (it's kinda your own private one) so I didn't end up interacting with the back yard which is where the garden is. It's small but pretty back there!
Oh! There is the parking coordination a wee bit so remember if you go there on every other Mon. or Tue. parking is a bit more constrained since everyone has to go over to one side (street cleaning) for a few hours in the morning. Ask Eva when you book what the schedule is, and then you can plan around it. I never had to walk more than a block to park, and most days I could park within half a block. Cars and people are safe on the street. Groceries are nice and in walking distance, as is the lake, which I thought would be most fun in the day but I actually really liked at dusk since the slackliners are there every evening and lots of people and kids run about.
Locationally, I am used to a lot of gastropubs and there is only one there, and I like to write and have my evening wine out very often, and I couldn't usually because most of my writing is online and the gastropub did not have internet nor was internet a norm in the restaurants (aside from cafes). Not everybody needs that...I'm just used to it where I live.
I needed a place to stay as I was moving out of another place in Piedmont, so Eva's room became a great little place to stay inbetween my travels as my wife came up to visit me during the week and it was perfect for us as we were going to drive back down to LA for Thanksgiving.
Eva was cordial when I arrived and let me know if I needed anything to ask away and if I needed help with anything that was local to her place and how to get around if I didn't have a car (which wasn't the case). Her listing stated she would be gone for 3 out of the 4 nights we were staying there, but that wasn't the case. That was one of the reasons I booked her place in the first place. Because I know my wife likes things to be really quiet when she's at home (studying for her state license). Either way, I was fine as I am gone most of the day anyways.
The bed in her living room was comfortable and the blanket was really thick and warm, my wife and I ended up having to switch out blankets and it was great that Eva gave us blanket options, it really helped. My wife stayed in the room throughout the day while I was at work. My wife smelled marijuana one night and it prevented her from sleeping one night. We both don't smoke anything, it didn't bother me so much, but it did for her.
Overall though, I would say Eva was really sweet and if we needed anything she was there to help. Thank you for allowing us to stay at your place.
Hi John, I apologize that the listing inaccurately stated that I'd be out of town for those nights, there was a change in plans and I had adjusted the price to be less but neglected to edit the text in the listing. Of course, you could have told me about that when you checked in - I would have gladly arranged a no fee cancellation if you didn't want to stay. I was very open with you that I'd be home during the days that you'd be staying.
As far as smelling marijuana - perhaps it was coming in from the open bathroom window (?) as folks in the building do smoke sometimes outside on the deck. But there is no smoking inside and I'm sorry she was bothered.
Unfortunately, we did not get to meet Eva but her neighbor who greeted us was very friendly and thorough. The apt, though not spacious, was a good size for two and had everything we needed. It is conveniently located and we loved being able to walk to restaurants, shops and parks. Our regret is that we didn't get to meet Eva as we feel like we would have had much in common based on the books in her apt.
The room was very sunny and nice. So it was just as described. The neighborhood was also fine - we had absolutely no problems! The bus stop is 5 minutes walking distance and it takes about 30 minutes to get so SF. Eva was very welcoming and we had some nice chats with her! We really enjoyed our time in Oakland!
Eva's home was beautiful and clean with plenty of space. Eva was an amazing host and was able to tell us exactly how to get into the City of San Francisco by bus. Her house is about a 10 minute walk (uphill) from the bus stop, but once you get on the bus, getting into the city is a straight shot. Her home is conveniently located near many shops and restaurants. It was an excellent experience that we thoroughly enjoyed.
Everything was clean and as described. There is a bus to San Francisco (30 min, 4.20$). Eva was very nice and gave as good tips for San Francisco and Oakland.
Eva was very accommodating, allowing us to book almost at the last minute and letting us receive mail at her address. She made everything easy and we felt very much at home at Eva's. It's a perfect place for one or two people to stay and very well located near Lake Merritt.
I am a traveler born and raised in the SF Bay area, active in my community as an artist and caregiver. I have traveled to Egypt, Senegal, Mali, Ghana, Ethiopia, Morocco, Greece, Ecuador, Costa Rica, St. Lucia, Martinique, Mexico, Puerto Rico and many U.S. states. I love dancing, music (reggae, dancehall, hip hop, Nigerian and Ghanaian music, Coupe d'Cale, ndombolo) sunshine and nature. My home is my sanctuary and workplace.
Depending on our schedules you may see me working at home in the kitchen during the days, or we could not meet at all because I'm out working until late at night. I enjoy talking with my guests when I see them, sharing a bit about ourselves and sometimes build friendships that have been long-lasting. I also respect guests' privacy and don't expect us to become best friends :) If I am making dinner or dessert while you are home, I may invite you to have some.
One thought that I try to live by is: If you can see it, you can do it.
