Spacious room by lake with garden

Apartment - Private room · Athol Ave, Oakland, CA 94606, United States

The Space

I am offering my spacious, sunny living room for short stays in the bay area. It is a semi-private room, with curtains separating it from the kitchen (which you have access to) and a pull-out double bed futon. Other amenities include a deck, beautiful garden and wireless internet. The apartment is on the second floor of a 4-unit building, with lots of natural light, plants, and a window seat that looks out onto a pretty and quiet street in a safe neighborhood.
It is four blocks from Lake Merritt, a very popular place to walk, run, picnic, kayak, or just watch the sunset from. Parking is always easy to find on the block and there are numerous city buses that are within walking distance. It is easy to get to the surrounding sights and cities of Berkeley and San Francisco. There is also Trader Joe's (grocery store), Walgreens, restaurants, laundromats, yoga studios, cafes, the historic Grand Lake movie theater, and a number of stores within walking distance. This neighborhood has a diverse array of International cuisine to choose from - Thai, Ethiopian, Indian, Vietnamese, Chinese, Mexican, Cuban, Italian - all delicious! We are also about 15 minutes from the popular monthly event "Oakland Art Murmur/First Fridays", showcasing artists and local culture on the first Friday of each month.
The apartment is quiet and clean, with a comfortable pull-out futon, a bathtub, a dinner table and chairs. There is wireless internet, no TV, but there is a large screen to connect a computer to if you want to watch something on your computer and speakers to connect a computer or mp3 player to.
The garden gets sun all day and is a welcoming place to have breakfast or lunch, read a book or sunbathe.

I invite you to enjoy the serenity of my home, so please no parties, including hard drinking or drugs. This is quiet and peaceful place to rest, create, work, and explore the area from.
Please no pets and no cigarettes.
This is a no-shoes home. Please remove your shoes after entering.

I work from home most days so I'll probably be home while you are staying, and we will share the use of the kitchen and the bathroom. I am relaxed, down to earth, and an experienced traveler who enjoys meeting people from all over the world and all walks of life. I'd be happy to give recommendations or advice about the area and things to do, as I have lived in the bay area all of my life.

Please note: this is a vegetarian kitchen. No meat prep permitted. Please clean up after yourself in the kitchen. Thank you!

Guest Access

Guests have access to the kitchen; pots, pans and dishware. Only vegetarian cooking permitted. Also there is access to the garden.

Interaction with Guests

I'll be home to greet you and look forward to meeting you, hearing a little about why you're here and what you do in life besides travel! I am often home during the weekdays, and out during the weekends. I enjoy friendly, short conversations but also respect privacy and quiet time.

  • This was my first airbnb experience. Eva was a gracious host and very accommodating. Room and facilities were comfortable and clean. There was plenty of street parking out front so this was ideal for the car rental. Also, the neighborhood seemed safe and was within walking distance to a variety of shops and restaurants.

  • Eva was a gracious host and her apartment is very conveniently located in the Cleveland Heights neighborhood and just a short walk to Lakeshore Avenue.

  • I had a wonderful stay at Eva's apartment. Eva was a super hostess while I shared her space. Her apartment is close to everything - Peet's Coffee, Whole Foods, Lake Merritt. Room was spacious and futon very comfortable. Will definitely come back next time I have work in Oakland. Could not ask for a better locale in a great neighborhood.

  • I was very satisfied staying in Eva's comfortable home, especially with the bright direct sun into the room in the morning, the great hot shower, the vintage charm of the building. Our schedules were such that we never met, yet I had no trouble staying due to her careful attention. The towels and linens were fresh and nice, the room roomy enough for yoga.

  • Eva was fantastic. She was a warm and welcoming host. The apartment is in a gorgeous, safe neighborhood of Oakland near the beautiful Lake Merritt. Perfect, cheap place to stay while we were visiting San Francisco.

  • Eva is an absolute JOY to rent/room from! She is extremely accommodating and attentive to her guests - in fact, after my travel plans were delayed, we made sure my travel partner was well taken care of and found her way around town until my arrival. Awesome experience and I'll definitely stay again... Thank you Eva!

  • Staying with Eva was the best experience I've had on airbnb. I was totally new to the Oakland area, however by the time I left I was familiar with parts of Oakland and San Francisco. Her place is small yet comfortable. Centrally located and walking distance from stores, eating areas, and the beautiful Lake Merritt. Would I stay again, YES. The way the sun hits the bedroom/sitting area is amazing...if you love the sun as much as I.
    Thanks Eva for everything

  • Room was very nice and cozy and Eva was very kind and easy to talk to. If I visit San Francisco again someday in the future, I will definitely stay here again! It was very pleasant stay.

    August 2013
  • We had a great stay at Eva's. She has a charming, spacious and clean living room, with a very comfortable sofa bed. There is plenty of space to park, and Downtown San Francisco is just 30 minutes away by public transportation.
Eva was very nice and welcoming, and made us feel at home. Thank you Eva!

I am a traveler born and raised in the SF Bay area, active in my community as an artist and caregiver. I have traveled to Egypt, Senegal, Mali, Ghana, Ethiopia, Greece, Ecuador, Costa Rica, St. Lucia, Martinique, Mexico, Puerto Rico and many U.S. states. I love dancing, music (reggae, dancehall, Nigerian and Ghanaian music, Coupe d'Cale, ndombolo) sunshine and nature. My home is my sanctuary and workplace. Depending on our schedules you may see me working at home in the kitchen during the days, or we could not meet at all because I'm out working until late at night. I enjoy talking with my guests when I see them, sharing a bit about ourselves and sometimes build friendships that have been long-lasting. I also respect guests' privacy and don't expect us to become best friends :) If I am making dinner or dessert while you are home, I may invite you to have some. One thought that I try to live by is: If you can see it, you can do it.
