The Tree House Is charming, new and handcrafted at our 35 acre Bio Thermales rainforest reserve with natural hot and cool springs pools in the north-central Costa Rican heartland. This is authentic Costa Rica: clean, comfortable and close to nature.
We are three hours north of San Jose (airport), 45 minutes east of Fortuna and Volcano Arenal, and the many activities there and nearby.
Guests enjoy 24/day access to our hot springs and trails in our 35 acre rainforest at no extra charge. We do not charge for children 17 and under -- but the Tree House is not appropriate for very young toddlers, for whom a 20 foot fall from the balcony would be very dangerous.
Our hot springs are ancient “deep Earth” sources that bubble up through the rainforest floor, laden with mineral-rich waters that have been in the Earth for at least 10,000 years. Our waters are rich in bicarbonates, calcium and magnesium, low in sulfur, and slightly acidic -- qualities shared by many of the world's best hot springs.
Five of our 9 organic form hot springs pools are located in the rainforest, and 4 hot springs pools as well as a small and a large cool spring swimming pool are located in a meadow, surrounded by rainforest (see below for more information).
Parents of young children should evaluate whether the height of the Tree House is safe and appropriate for their children. There are railings around the balcony that surround the Tree House but a determined child could climb over them and fall or a very small child could crawl through the spaces in the railing. Every child is individual and their parents must use their best judgment and assume any risk.
The Tree House is built to strict Costa Rican building codes, but as with all tree houses, there is some movement when the wind blows, and this could be uncomfortable for people very sensitive to motion sickness.

Food/Meals: The Tree House has a kitchen. There are many restaurants and a good supermarket within a 15 minute drive. Traditional Costa Rican meals can be delivered from a local caterer for very reasonable prices (Costa Rican food is tasty but not spicy). Otherwise, for those without cars, we can call a taxi or synchronize a food shopping trip when we go to town for errands.
Driving from SJO airport: Please message us before booking if we are your first and/or last destination in Costa Rica.
We recommend at least a small 4 wheel drive car. The last 3 kilometers are country roads.
Three hours of daylight are needed to safely drive here from the SJO airport before sunset at 5:30 pm. The drive through mountainous cloud forests is splendid in daylight, but prone to fog and rain, especially at night, creating hazardous visibility conditions after dark. Finding our countryside location will also be far easier if you arrive the first time before sunset. If your plane lands in the morning to noon, you can drive here directly from the airport. Otherwise, it is safer to book a room near the airport on your first night, or ask us to book a private driver ($145) and have a rental car delivered at no extra charge.
Last night in Costa Rica:
Driving directly to the SJO airport on the same day is possible if you book a flight in the afternoon. Please be aware that you must be at the airport 2.5 hours before departure. If you have an early morning departing flight it is basically necessary to stay near the airport on the night before.
Five of our 9 organic form hot springs pools are located in the rainforest, and 4 hot springs pools as well as a small and a large cool spring swimming pool are located in a meadow, surrounded by rainforest and one cool fresh spring pool in the rainforest (see below for more information). Tree House guests enjoy 24 hour hot springs pools and 35 acres of rainforest access at no charge.
Interaction with Guests
We enjoy interacting with our guests and making suggestions for and even help book activities in the area, as well as options for transportation. For personal interaction, we take our cues from our guests -- if they prefer privacy, we respect that; if they enjoy interaction, we are open to interaction and have met many delightful new friends in this way. If we are away, our Costa Rican manager, Johan, moves into our house with his lovely wife and baby daughter, so there is always a manager onsite.
No smoking or flame inside the wooden Tree House or on the wooden deck. Barbecue grill is provided below the Tree House on ground level but may not be used on the deck. No glass bottles or dishes may be used in the pools. Guests leaving the property after 6 pm must be willing to close the gate behind them.
Children must be supervised at all times in the pools and rainforest.
Totally stunning property. Great, lovely, friendly hosts. Kathy was super helpful for all aspects of our trip to Costa Rica, including parts not at Bio Thermales. Both the mariposa casitas and the treehouse were amazing. We had a great time hanging out with the owners and other guests late into the evening. The hot polls were so nice. I hope to come back here one day. I was travelling with my seven year old and she adored it as well
We very much enjoyed staying at the tree house. It had a great view to the rain forest. We loved having coffee in the morning and looking up to 5 different iguanas sitting in the tree. One of our favorite moments staying in the tree house was Kathy and Bernie's dog, Pepe. He was very friendly and actually led us on an hour hike through the rainforest. The grounds were beautiful and it was wonderful to relax in all the thermal baths. We definitely would return! One thing I did not know was that there are other beautiful cabins on the grounds (beyond the treehouse), so if the tree house is not available, take a look at the cabins.
Our stay at Kathy and Bernie's was enjoyable. Prior to the trip, Kathy contacted me on several occasions (by phone and email) and gave me very thorough instructions and suggestions for the trip. She really invested a lot of time in making arrangements and communication with her was very reliable and easy. She was a lovely host and always to be found when needed. Really above and beyond. The same can be said for her kind and hospitable (and very talented) husband Bernie. We'd also met with the grounds keeper Johan who was very pleasant and approachable as well. The tree house itself was rustic and the attention to detail in its construction is beautiful. The beds were comfortable, the fans worked well, and on days it rained it was particularly cool inside. The shower was clean and worked well and there were ample utensils and cleaning supplies should we need. Bedding was lovingly arranged before our arrival. The coffee Kathy provided us with (Naranjo) was so delicious. I bought a big bag to bring home! As the house is built on stilts, it does sway at times, though not terribly. The catered meals were yummy and very affordable (especially the fresh fruit) and eating breakfast on the wrap-around porch was such a treat. Also, a lovely young woman provided full body massages at the treehouse at a very affordable price. It was a beautiful experience. The only downside were the gnats that wouldn't let up until the fans ran a considerable amount of time. Though, it is the rainforest, so that's to be expected. I would recommend bringing ear plugs for the howler monkeys at night! Though I will say, listening to them is really cool. Due to its more remote location, it's better suited for people who want a more rustic, quiet, relaxing experience in a safe area. It's 45 mintues from La Fortuna, and some roads are better paved than others (potholed, winding, etc.), so a car (4X4) is a must. Though we didn't get as much time as we'd hoped in the thermal baths (since our plans kept us out all day), the brief experience we did have was very pleasant. We thank our hosts tremendously for our stay and certainly recommend it to others.
What can I say! From the moment I saw the treehouse, I knew I wanted to have our wedding there. And we did! Kathy was absolutely amazing from start to finish. She literally organized everything for us and with such enthusiasm. It was a dream wedding, on the back balcony of the treehouse. We spent the rest of the time in the pools, which were such a joy. I did rain. ALL the time. Yes, I know it's a rainforest, but there was no let up so be prepared, with rubber boots, umbrella's etc. The treehouse is fantastic. Stairs are steep and you need to be careful but it is well equipped and well secured from small flying creatures! It was cold, so Kathy gave us another blanket. The grounds were too soggy to do a hike so we just relaxed in the pools and purveyed the local wildlife. Kathy and Bernie are an amazing couple and we thank them (and Johan and Anna Marie and Pastor Luis and Frank, the tour guide) for making our day so special. And a big shout out to the monkey who ate our wedding cake!!! :) I am giving it 5 stars because the place was fantastic. The non-stop rain was off putting. But there is nothing one can do about that!
Today is sunny and bright -- and we hope that this signals the end of the rainy season which should have stopped just before New Year. This January and February have been very unusual -- a local farmer who has lived here for more than 60 years said he had never seen the rainy season continuing into the dry season with so much rain. We are hoping the warm dry weather continues as it does normally this time of year. We all loved your wedding and meeting both of you. We wish you a long and happy marriage and feel honored that you chose us for your wedding! We have an all points bulletin for that suspiciously human-looking monkey (he didn't really eat their cake -- it's an inside joke). All the best, Kathy
Relaxte Oase, charmante Gastgeber mit sehr zuvorkommendem Team. Empfehlenswert!!
My wife an I spent a wonderful week at Bio Thermales with Kathy and Bernie. We stayed in the tree-house, which is unique and provided a great deal of privacy. All of the pictures and descriptions were very accurate, so if you like what you see, you will love it. It is a bit rustic, but very comfortable and well-maintained. Kathy was extremely helpful with information prior to our trip, and she and Bernie were both wonderful when we met them. All of the staff were friendly, and Johan took the time to explain about the place and show us the full property. For those of you who benefit from thermal baths, as I do, this place is exceptional.
I also like that, at Bio Thermales, the guests and the locals can all mix. The place is very family-oriented, and the presence of local Ticos contributes to a very relaxed atmosphere.
We definitely plan to visit again in the future.

Pura Vida! (“Pure life” is an all-purpose greeting in Costa Rica, as well as a way of life.)
Kathy and Bernie (American and German, respectively) have designed Bio Thermales so guests may enjoy the beneficent hot springs and rainforest while making only positive impacts on the rainforest in our care. This is a very healing and lovely place and we look forward to sharing it with you. We have worked on many environmental endeavors, professionally and as volunteers. Bernie is an engineer, organic gardener, woodworker, artist and great cook. Kathy is a nutritionist, writer, graphic designer, and community and events organizer. We have also been active in many human rights efforts.
We have a friendly dog, tilapia pond and free-ranging chickens.
