Fall asleep to the sound of a waterfall and babbling brook outside your bedroom window in this historic former flax mill known as St. John's Mill. The cottage is newly renovated and features a well equipped kitchen, sofa where you can put up your feet and gaze out the living room window at the dam and waterfall, and a private grill and terrace overlooking Guinea Creek. Located along a scenic route convenient to Kent, Millerton, Salisbury & Amenia.

The space
The Cottage is off the driveway and nestled among trees overlooking a brook with a waterfall. The entrance is accessed via a short walkway and three steps up to the front door which opens onto the sunny windowed kitchen equipped for cooking and a cozy dining room that seats four. The rooms are all on one level. Past these is a south-facing living room (14x9) with views of the brook and waterfall, a comfy sofa, desk with ethernet, and a TV you can hook your computer to for viewing. There is also an internet radio you can get any station on and a small record player. Mid-century furniture and vintage art and fixtures can be found throughout.

The bedroom off of the living room has a queen sized bed, dresser and closet with an iron and ironing board. The bedroom is very quiet at night other than the waterfall outside which you can hear if you open the window and when it's really running, the sound of water can be heard throughout the cottage. There is a full, en suite bath in the bedroom with a spa-like feeling and soft towels natural shampoo/conditioner/bodywash, & a hair dryer . If you are looking for a tech detox, this is an ideal setting as there is limited cell service (use cell over WiFi or forward your phone to the landline). WiFi can be turned on/off by guests and is located in the coat closet. For the few warm days we get, there is an A/C that cools the whole cottage.

Guinea Brook, Garden & Terrace
The property is 7 acres along Guinea Brook which you are welcome to explore. There is 1,200 ft of brook along a high, glacier carved ridge and woods overlooking the brook below. You'll have access to the brook and the dam where you can sit and dip your feet in the water and watch young trout and if you're lucky, you may see a blue heron or snowy owl. There is an assortment of fresh culinary herbs growing outside the front door for cooking. The private terrace has outdoor lighting, a BBQ, table and chairs and casual seating. The washer/dryer can be found in the basement below the cottage through a door off the terrace. The main house is a distant 200 ft away which gives the cottage privacy

Where you’ll be
Sharon, Connecticut, United States
Sharon is known for its scenic and historic location in the Litchfield Hills with woods, lakes, streams and colonial architecture. The Housatonic River is at the base of our hill and the cottage is centrally located amidst many attractions, depending upon your outdoor, arts, culinary, performing arts, historic and other interests. It is an easy drive to Millerton, Amenia, Sharon, Salisbury, New Canaan, West Cornwall, Cornwall, Cornwall Village, Goshen, Litchfield, and Kent. Sheffield and Great Barrington, MA are about 45 minutes away. Also convenient for parents visiting their children at area boarding schools.

For outdoor and nature enthusiasts, the Appalachian Trail crosses our road 1.5 miles below the cottage and there are recommended day hikes including Lion's Head in Salisbury and The River Trail in Falls Village to the north and two day hikes to the south in Kent. In winter, Mohawk Mountain in nearby Cornwall offers skiing and tubing. Kayaking and rafting is available on the Housatonic River during summer and fall. The area is a destination for weekend cyclists and there are lovely scenic country roads that can be explored in the countryside west of the cottage.

Sharon is home of the Sharon Playhouse which offers plays and musicals throughout the summer season. The area is also known for antique shops, galleries, and artist studios which host open studios and art walks throughout summer and into fall.

The cottage itself is located on a scenic route along historic Guinea Creek, the location of the only operating grist mill during the Revolutionary War that was not destroyed by the British. The current cottage was built on the foundation of a working mill, St. John's Flax Mill, that served the area from 1799 to 1880. The dam and waterfall were rebuilt in the 20th c.

Upon booking, we will share a comprehensive list of area attractions and resources including fine and casual dining, farm and farmers markets, art galleries, and food and retail stores and other activities for planning your visit.
