Casa Baleia,Tofinho,Mozambique(8bd)

House - Entire home/apt · Tofinho South Rd, Inhambane, Inhambane, Mozambique

Perched high on a dune, with a breathtaking 200 degree view of the Indian Ocean and 200m from a private beach - this is the ideal haven to get away from it all.

Although it's only 30km away from the Inhambane Airport and only 3km away from Tofo beach (with it's markets, bars, restaurants, surfing and famous diving reefs), this house is completely private, with hardly any other houses as far as the eye can see.

The house has a very open/spacious feel, with spectacular views from each area, even the room overlooking the inland palm groves. The spacious veranda, overlooking the ocean, is the ideal place to laze away the afternoon in the shade and at night time the stars light up the sky.

Note that due to being away from it all, the road and amenities might feel too rustic for some travellers, but perfect for eco-tourists like myself.

-A 4x4 is highly recommended, but only for the last few hundred meters to the house
-No fires/braaing, only use the provided gas cooking. Be very careful when smoking not to cause a fire hazard
-8 beds, 2 main rooms with double beds (that can be moved apart) and 4 single beds in the loft area. Max 8 people.
-The friendly cleaner and handy man, Francisco, will help where he can. A tip will be highly appreciated, about $3-4 per recommended
-Please treat the house and surrounding fauna and flora with respect
-Use water, drains, electricity sparingly - there is no public systems
-Only toilet paper in toilets, due to septic tank drain

  • We (group of 5) had a great week at Casa Baleia. The house is definitely a must for anyone who enjoys seeing the sunrise, sunset or stargazing. It is also close to an almost secluded and private beach (even though you'll have to go up and down in the dunes a bit) where you'll be able to enjoy the sun and take a bath in the warm Indian Ocean.

Francisco, the housekeeper, was (as all of the Tofo people actually) really humble and eager to help. He helped us pick and prepare fish and lobster that we bought from local fishermen that came around every morning and did all the dishes and cleaning.

The bedrooms were spacey and there was no lack of space in any way. Anyone who gets scared from some nature going around (as in small insects, small geckos) should be aware that it's a possibility. For us, it wasn't a deal breaker in any way though.

As for the host, Jacques was extremely helpful, provided us with an extremely detailed and helpful house manual and proved to be ready to help us in any way we required, whether by answering our questions or by putting us in touch with anyone who could.

Overall, we were extremely happy with the experience and would definitely like to go back some day. The house is just what you'd imagine when you think of a tree house, on top of a dune, looking at an amazing view.

  • We had an unforgettable time at Casa Baleia. The house was spacious enough for the 6 of us. No other house in Tofinho, Inhambane has this incredible view from the deck and all other corners of the house. The best place in the area for sunrise, sunset and star gazing. The backdoor beach closest to the house is perfect and one is completely undisturbed. If you do not like the noise of all those four wheel bikes make and bad loud techno music from neighbours and other commercial places, then this location is total bliss. Air conditioning was not necessary and mosquitoes were very rarely seen or felt. Jacques was a great host and we would not mind visiting again and again. Thank You.

  • We had a wonderful week staying in Casa Baleia, Tofo. The house is exactly what we were looking for. Perched on top of a sand dune with magnificent views over Tofino beach and the Indian Ocean. Our host was very organised and made sure our stay was flawless. The house keeper and night guard were very friendly and a pleasure to meet. I would highly recommend this place. We will certainly go back if we get the chance!

  • It was great chilling on the deck and we spent hours just watching the sea (spectacular view!), and we saw many whales. The house is on the edge of Tofo, so it's in nature away from the bustle of town, but close enough for going for a quick drink.

Staff was very friendly and did all the dishes and cleaning. We gave Francisco some money and he brought us some fresh Pao from his village also.

Jacques is a great host and is very helpful with tips and information before the stay.

The place is beautiful and rustic. I would highly recommend a visit to Casa Baleia,

  • This place is GREAT! The view from the porch is spectacular. We would watch whales in the distance as we had breakfast each morning. One of the people that stayed at the house kept saying the place was very "Robinson Crusoe."

The house has plenty of space. We were two couples and a friend.. there was a bedroom for each couple and the friend had the loft space all to himself. The common space is also a comfy place to hang out after a nice day at the beach. There's a large, fully equipped kitchen. (And even a solar powered hot water heater that provided plenty of hot water for all five of us!)

Jacques is also great! Even from before we arrived, he was very helpful. He gave us tips on where to catch waves, where to go snorkeling, who to contact to swim with whale sharks.. and even a few tips about buying local fish. Jacques also has a couple of associates in Tofo that are very helpful in his absence. Fransisco, the caretaker of the house was very friendly and seemed eager to help.

I will be going back and will certainly recommend the place to my friends.

  • What an incredible place! We had some friends stay in other places around the area and I have to say we had the best spot. The views are gorgeous and the rooms are even nicer than the pictures (there's a great loft that is very comfortable).

The beach is fantastic, I'd definitely recommend taking a long walk. Jacques is a great person to be renting a place from.

Also, the position of the house deters a lot of the bug life inherent in Mozambiquen life. Our friends in other houses ended up getting a fair amount of bug bites, however no one staying at Jacques' place had one bite! We even went out on the deck at night without a bug in sight.
