Perched on a dune with a breathtaking 180 degree ocean view to the East, hills with palm groves to the West and a little private beach 300m away, our private, rustic holiday home is the ideal haven to appreciate nature and simplicity

The space

Perched high on a dune, with a breathtaking 180 degree view of the Indian Ocean and 300m from a private beach - this is the ideal haven to get away from it all.

Note that due to being away from it all, the 4x4 road up the dune, basic amenities and architecture in Mozambique style the house might feel too rustic for some travellers. Clean water is pumped from a borehole and cooking on a gas grill and stove. 4x4 is must. This is perfect for eco-tourists like my family, but please only book if this is also your idea of a get away.

The house is designed to let the breeze through to keep it cool - some guests don't like the fact that insects and sometimes even a squirrel can visit.

Although it's only 30km away from the Inhambane Airport and only 3km away from Tofo beach (with it's markets, bars, restaurants, surfing and famous diving reefs), this house is completely private, with hardly any other houses as far as the eye can see.

The house has a very open/spacious feel, with spectacular views from each area, even the room overlooking the inland palm groves. The spacious veranda, overlooking the ocean, is the ideal place to laze away the afternoon in the shade and at night time the stars light up the sky.

The house has 8 beds. It has 2 main rooms with double beds (that can be moved apart) and 4 single beds in the open loft area. Max 8 people.

The house is located on the outskirts of the Tofinho suburb of Tofo Beach town, 30km from Inhambane province in Mozambique.

Guest access

-You will need a proper 4x4 and off-road driving experience for the last few hundred meters. Some guests without 4x4 chose park close by and walk the last few hundred meters, but that's too much effort for lazy holiday-makers like myself.
-No fires/braaing, only use the provided gas cooking. Be very careful when smoking not to cause a fire hazard
-GPS Coords: (phone number hidden)

Interaction with guests

It's my holiday home and I live in Joburg, but the friendly housekeeper, Franciso, will check in daily and the manager, Orlando, will come and say hi, and see that you're looked after (let him know if you run into any problems). Also, the guards, Ricardo and Antonio, don't speak english, but will help where they can.

Just note that is still a self-catering set-up, and does not have all the services of a fancy hotel.

The friendly cleaner and handy man, Francisco, will help where he can. A tip will be highly appreciated, about $3-4 per day stay recommended.

Other things to note

Feel free to ask me any questions about the place and area, especially if you have not been in Mozambique before.

The view is stunning and the house stays pretty cool with all the windows open with a cross breeze. The place does need some basic upgrades such as working windows and door knobs. We really enjoyed our stay, we were able to do it without a car; it's a long walk to town but we were prepared for it. Overall a great holiday.

Group of 5 friends stayed for 3 nights and loved the solitude way up on the dune and having the beach below practically to ourselves. Ate our breakfast on the porch while watching loads of humpback whales pass by. The house is rustic, but comfortable and only a short (though rather steep and sandy) drive to town, a good 4x4 is a must! If you are looking for a simple, yet comfortable place away from the hustle and bustle of town and with the best view around- Casa Baleia is a great choice.

This place is GREAT! The view from the porch is spectacular. We would watch whales in the distance as we had breakfast each morning. One of the people that stayed at the house kept saying the place was very "Robinson Crusoe." The house has plenty of space. We were two couples and a friend.. there was a bedroom for each couple and the friend had the loft space all to himself. The common space is also a comfy place to hang out after a nice day at the beach. There's a large, fully equipped kitchen. (And even a solar powered hot water heater that provided plenty of hot water for all five of us!) Jacques is also great! Even from before we arrived, he was very helpful. He gave us tips on where to catch waves, where to go snorkeling, who to contact to swim with whale sharks.. and even a few tips about buying local fish. Jacques also has a couple of associates in Tofo that are very helpful in his absence. Fransisco, the caretaker of the house was very friendly and seemed eager to help. I will be going back and will certainly recommend the place to my friends.

What an incredible place! We had some friends stay in other places around the area and I have to say we had the best spot. The views are gorgeous and the rooms are even nicer than the pictures (there's a great loft that is very comfortable). The beach is fantastic, I'd definitely recommend taking a long walk. Jacques is a great person to be renting a place from. Also, the position of the house deters a lot of the bug life inherent in Mozambiquen life. Our friends in other houses ended up getting a fair amount of bug bites, however no one staying at Jacques' place had one bite! We even went out on the deck at night without a bug in sight.

Really nice house 10mins out of Tofo, nice view great for a chilled holiday with friends. 4x4 needed to reach the house by car directly eventhough the last 200m you can walk and its still worth the effort.
