GringoWasi is a unique bed and breakfast offering a quiet small town experience just 30 min. from Cusco, perfect for relaxing and refueling. Come and enjoy our refurbished and spacious century old traditional adobe home in Huarocondo, conveniently located between Cusco and Ollantaytambo. This small town is nestled in a beautiful valley with a population of approximately 5,000 people, Huarocondo provides a welcomed change of pace for travelers looking to escape the tourist vibe of Cusco and enjoy a peaceful night’s rest.
The property is owned and operated by Lyle & Lily an American/Peruvian couple that relocated to the Cusco region to operate a bed and breakfast. Lyle is originally from southern California and most recently lived in Las Vegas; Lily is originally from Lima, Peru and lived in the US for 12 years. The two met in Las Vegas in 2005, fell in love and were married not long after. Shortly after their first trip together to Lily’s home country of Peru, the two started to make plans to move there permanently. In early 2012 the couple took a trip to Cusco and purchased the property with the intention of converting it into a bed and breakfast now known as “GringoWasi”. The name was chosen as a way to pay respect to the local culture; most of the population of Huarocondo still speaks their native language Quechua, Wasi being a Quechua word for house means the name can be translated to “Gringo’s House”.
GringoWasi offers a large great room for relaxing, an inviting patio, separate dining room, 24 hr. hot water, DVD library for guest use and a smoke free environment. Guests can also enjoy complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the property, use of a computer, bag/luggage storage and calls to or from the US and Canada via our MagicJack.
At GringoWasi we also offer additional services for a reasonable fee, including laundry services, transportation, afternoon and evening meals, as well as tour services for our guests and would be happy to assist with all your travel plans, from your arrival in Lima to your departure. We work with several properties in Lima and other towns, as well as local tour operators and would be happy to assist you in booking your room in Lima, flight from Lima to Cusco and any desired tours or other lodgings needed. Additionally we offer private and personalized back road adventure tours to some of the local sites on a limited basis. Please contact us in advance if you are interested in a private tour as they tend to book quick. Tour options include Machu Picchu, Sacred Valley, Inca Trail, Moray, paragliding, zip lines and bungee jumping to name a few.
If you are looking for a little local excitement we suggest visiting in November when there are two separate festivals, one celebrating the founding of the city and the other a celebration of roast pig or “Lechon”. The largest local festival is the festival of the Virgin del Carmen, this festival runs for 5 days and starts on July 15th. June is also an exciting time as this is when the Cusco region celebrates Inti Raymi, the biggest festival in the area and one of the busiest times to visit Cusco.
This spacious room features one double bed, a table with two small chairs, one larger chair for relaxing, night stands, small armoire, towels, linens, down comforters, locally handcrafted décor, lockable storage, 32” LCD television with satellite and DVD player, and shares a bath room with two other rooms. A full breakfast is included with your room and may include (subject to availability) fresh baked breads, fruit, ham, cheeses, jam, eggs, fruit juice, coffee, and teas. Clock Radio i-Pod docks and hair dryers are also available upon request.

We live here at the property so you will most likely see us a lot, we always try and have dinner at the same time so that any guests wanting to, can join us for dinner. Breakfasts are a little different as, different guests need to leave at different times, depending on their schedules. Additionally, anytime we are not away transporting or taking guests on tours, we are here at the property.
Huarocondo is a small rural town set in an agricultural valley, located mid-way between Cusco and the Sacred Valley, with the main attraction being the beauty, peace and tranquility. There are plenty of roads and trails for hiking and the largest lake in the Cusco region is just 11.5 km to the North East. Additionally there are two archeological sites close by, Andenes Zurite which is 5.6 km to the south and the trail to Wata is 5.5 km to the North West. The property is located just one block from the Huarocondo main Plaza where you can sample the local specialty of lechon or roast pig, and there is also a large colonial church on the main plaza that houses several paintings, that we have been told, are more valuable than the ones in the cathedral in Cusco.
There are a few options for transportation in and out of town, depending on where you want to go. The first and easiest is for us to arrange a car and driver for you; this can be almost any time of day or night, and services range from basic transportation to full day tours.
There is also public transportation available in and out of town by either colectivos or buses. These start about 5:30am and will continue until either 6:30pm or 9:00pm depending on the route.
Our goal here at GringoWasi is that you to enjoy your vacation to the fullest, if you have any questions or need something, please don’t hesitate to ask. Just because we don’t “offer” something, doesn’t mean it is not within our ability to provide. We do our best to anticipate our guest’s needs but not all guests are the same, so don’t be afraid to ask.
We also send out a list of travel tips and other useful information after you have booked, sometimes this information will end up in your junk folder, so if you have booked with us, please check your junk folder after making the booking for additional information.
Staying with Lyle and Lilly was easier than staying with a family member. Before our trip Lyle was very accommodating in helping us get some of the other details of our trip figured out. He went out of his way to book our Inka trail trip and we greatly appreciated that. Once in Peru both Lyle and Lilly made us feel welcome, safe and informed the entire trip. Between taxiing us around, giving us tips, and allowing us to store our luggage they took almost all the stress out of travelling in South America for the first time. Their place is located in a very small town which gave us a more authentic view of life in Peru. While it is small there is enough to do and try there and even though it is a little over an hour to Cuzco it is very easy to get to using the public transportation ($4 total). I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this bnb to anyone looking to experience Peru away from all the crowds of tourists. Thank you for making our stay so great.
Please see previous review.
This was one of the best places to stay and the most comfortable of all. I would highly recommend staying longer then a few days. A bit away from things but easy to get around from the small town. The hosts were very helpful and easy with everything. I would go there again. Planning next year to stay longer and bring friends. Thanks much. Electrum
Met at bus and even stopped at a local market not in guidebooks on the way home because we wanted to do that. Lyle and Lily make a study of how to be the best hosts from little things like a layout of teas and drinking water accessible at all times to big things like arranging taxi tours and hotel stays. homemade typical dinner with all the guests is not to be missed and happens every night. Lily runs a tight ship but a very cozy welcoming stay...super clean, super functional...Lyle has made this beautiful old hostal in tip top shape and you never run out of hot water or plugs that work.
the town of Huaronco is charming...don't miss the glorious colonial church in the square. you do have to go to Izuachaca to get most places but we found it easy. L&L can arrange drivers for
Me and my boyfriend would like to thank Lyle and Lily for making our stay as lovely as it was! We had a great time in Huarocondo!
After arriving to Cusco area and spending a couple of nights in the city center of Cusco we wanted to get away from the city and see how people live in the countryside and it was worth it. We bargained for a taxi and got a ride to Huarocondo with 35 soles( we heard mostly the cost is around 40-60). We arrived early in the morning and Lyle came for a walk with us and showed around. Later Lyle and Lily took us to a Lechon festival which was one of the nicest experiences, we could see the locals spend time together, eat well and party. We loved our room, the bed was big and comfortable, internet worked well and tv had all our favorite channels.
Lyle and Lily offer meals for 10 soles, which is definitely worth trying. The meals were delicious! We would highly recommend Gringo Wasi and if we ever went back to Cusco, we would book this hostel again without any hesitation!
Gringo Wasi is more than you can expect from a BnB. If you think that not being in the city center of Cusco could be an inconvenient... you're wrong! You can find in Huaracondo the real Peruvian way of life in their neighbours. Moreover, Lily & Lyle (who are the soul of Gringo Wasi) could drive you through the Sacred Valley out of the touristic circuit and at your own timing and without hurries!
We stayed at GringoWasi for a week and loved everything about the experience. Lyle was so helpful in assisting with reserving train and tickets for Macchu Pichu as well as offering advice and answering our many questions before our trip. We took advantage of the option of transportation and private trips to various sites in the Sacred Valley and were so glad we did. It was wonderful to have all arranged and Lyle and Lily did a fantastic job of showing us around the countryside--both to the popular sites and to others off the beaten path. Our room at the Bed and Breakfast was exactly as pictured: spacious, clean, and welcoming. Staying in Huarocondo allowed us to see "a week in the life of" typical Peruvians. Lyle's breakfasts and Lily's dinners were always delicous. The other travellers staying at GringoWasi were as outgoing and friendly as Lyle and Lilly and we really enjoyed getting to know them. We would go back for a second stay in a heartbeat!
Had two lovely days in Huarocondo with Lilly and Lyle. Great place to see a bit more of Peru away from the standard tourist cities and we really felt at home in their home. We did some day hikes in the area, up on the montains for some beautiful views and to some nerby terasses in Zurite.
Comfortable room. Delicious food with actually enough to fill you up (unlike your average peruvian breakfast). Hospitable hosts. Overall an enjoyable experience, especially if you prefer to be outside the big city. If relying on public transportation the times to cusco can be iffy. And the hot water is average for the cusco region (electric not gas).
We loved staying at Wasi Gringo. Lyle and Lilly were lovely hosts. All the food we ate was great. Make sure to try the Lechones down the street!
The room was pretty, clean and served the purpose.
One of the best thing about staying at Wasi Gringo is how helpful Lyle and Lilly were in terms of giving advice about visiting surrounding sites. They had a wealth of information to share.
