GringoWasi, Room 4 w/ Private Bath

Bed & Breakfast - Private room · Cusco, Cuzco, Peru

Come experience typical Andean village life in this small picturesque town, located mid-way between the city of Cusco and the Sacred Valley. Huarocondo is an ideal place to relax and enjoy nature, with quiet evenings and many trails and roads to hike

The Space

GringoWasi is a unique bed and breakfast offering a quiet small town experience just 30 min. from Cusco, perfect for relaxing and refueling. Come and enjoy our refurbished and spacious century old traditional adobe home in Huarocondo, conveniently located between Cusco and Ollantaytambo. This small town is nestled in a beautiful valley with a population of approximately 5,000 people, Huarocondo provides a welcomed change of pace for travelers looking to escape the tourist vibe of Cusco and enjoy a peaceful night’s rest.

The property is owned and operated by Lyle & Lily an American/Peruvian couple that relocated to the Cusco region to operate a bed and breakfast. Lyle is originally from southern California and most recently lived in Las Vegas; Lily is originally from Lima, Peru and lived in the US for 12 years. The two met in Las Vegas in 2005, fell in love and were married not long after. Shortly after their first trip together to Lily’s home country of Peru, the two started to make plans to move there permanently. In early 2012 the couple took a trip to Cusco and purchased the property with the intention of converting it into a bed and breakfast now known as “GringoWasi”. The name was chosen as a way to pay respect to the local culture; most of the population of Huarocondo still speaks their native language Quechua, Wasi being a Quechua word for house means the name can be translated to “Gringo’s House”.

GringoWasi offers a large great room for relaxing, an inviting patio, separate dining room, 24 hr. hot water, DVD library for guest use and a smoke free environment. Guests can also enjoy complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the property, use of a computer, bag/luggage storage and calls to or from the US and Canada via our MagicJack.

At GringoWasi we also offer additional services for a reasonable fee, including laundry services, transportation, afternoon and evening meals, as well as tour services for our guests and would be happy to assist with all your travel plans, from your arrival in Lima to your departure. We work with several properties in Lima and other towns, as well as local tour operators and would be happy to assist you in booking your room in Lima, flight from Lima to Cusco and any desired tours or other lodgings needed. Additionally we offer private and personalized back road adventure tours to some of the local sites on a limited basis. Please contact us in advance if you are interested in a private tour as they tend to book quick. Tour options include Machu Picchu, Sacred Valley, Inca Trail, Moray, paragliding, zip lines and bungee jumping to name a few.

If you are looking for a little local excitement we suggest visiting in November when there are two separate festivals, one celebrating the founding of the city and the other a celebration of roast pig or “Lechon”. The largest local festival is the festival of the Virgin del Carmen, this festival runs for 5 days and starts on July 15th. June is also an exciting time as this is when the Cusco region celebrates Inti Raymi, the biggest festival in the area and one of the busiest times to visit Cusco.

This spacious room features one double and one single bed, a table with two small chairs, one larger chair for relaxing, night stands, small armoire, towels, linens, down comforters, locally handcrafted décor, comfortable mattresses, lockable storage, 32” LCD television with satellite and DVD player, hair dryer and a private bath room with shower. A full breakfast is included with your room and may include (subject to availability) fresh baked breads, fruit, ham, cheeses, jams, eggs, fruit juice, coffee, and teas. Clock Radio i-Pod docks are also available upon request.

Guest Access

Guests will have access to the main/shared room where we have areas for sitting and relaxing as well as a TV/DVD and laptop computer. Guests also have 24 hour access to the dining room, with access to filtered drinking water coffee and tea.

Interaction with Guests

We live here at the property so you will most likely see us a lot, we always try and have dinner at the same time so that any guests wanting to, can join us for dinner. Breakfasts are a little different as, different guests need to leave at different times, depending on their schedules. Additionally, anytime we are not away transporting or taking guests on tours, we are here at the property.

The Neighborhood

Huarocondo is a small rural town set in an agricultural valley, located mid-way between Cusco and the Sacred Valley, with the main attraction being the beauty, peace and tranquility. There are plenty of roads and trails for hiking and the largest lake in the Cusco region is just 11.5 km to the North East. Additionally there are two archeological sites close by, Andenes Zurite which is 5.6 km to the south and the trail to Wata is 5.5 km to the North West. The property is located just one block from the Huarocondo main Plaza where you can sample the local specialty of lechon or roast pig, and there is also a large colonial church on the main plaza that houses several paintings, that we have been told, are more valuable than the ones in the cathedral in Cusco.

Getting around

There are a few options for transportation in and out of town, depending on where you want to go. The first and easiest is for us to arrange a car and driver for you; this can be almost any time of day or night, and services range from basic transportation to full day tours.

There is also public transportation available in and out of town by either colectivos or buses. These start about 5:30am and will continue until either 6:30pm or 9:00pm depending on the route.

Other Things to Note

Our goal here at GringoWasi is that you to enjoy your vacation to the fullest, if you have any questions or need something, please don’t hesitate to ask. Just because we don’t “offer” something, doesn’t mean it is not within our ability to provide. We do our best to anticipate our guest’s needs but not all guests are the same, so don’t be afraid to ask.

We also send out a list of travel tips and other useful information after you have booked, sometimes this information will end up in your junk folder, so if you have booked with us, please check your junk folder after making the booking for additional information.

  • We are so grateful for our stay at GringoWasi. Lyle personally collected us from the airport and Lily arranged all of our travel and tickets for Machu Picchu. Huarocondo is a quiet little village where it is easy to relax away from the hustle and bustle of Cusco proper. We found the rooms comfortable and cozy, although the floors are very thin and do not offer much in the way of sound insulation. Lyle is aware of this and mentioned he will fix it in the future. We enjoyed the Christmas dinner together and would recommend Gringowasi to fellow travelers looking to get off the tourist trap highway :-)

We were happy to help and enjoyed having you and Laurent here with us, hope the remainder of your trip/cruise went well.

  • Best decision was staying here. Lyle and Lily were phenomenal to say the least. They are super receptive and helpful. Prior to our trip there (even before booking), Lyle provided so much useful and unbiased information. This cute B&B is in Huaracondo (about 30min from Cusco), so we had to catch a "collectivo/bus" to and from almost everyday, but we didn't mind it (think speaking Spanish helps). If you don't like going back and forth (it's fun for few days, but can get tiring after a while) or mind people mildly invading your personal space (they pack cars/bus with as many as they can fit), then it may not work for you, but this was all part of the experience my sister and I enjoy...get a feel for the everyday life of the native people there. I had a great experience. I stayed just a little over a week (minus the Machu Picchu days) and have no regrets. Lyle and Lily provide a safe, clean environment making you feel right at home (free wifi, cable tv, blowdryer, hot water, meals, good company). I will stay there next time I visit (that's if they still have rooms available once the word gets out that this is the coolest place to stay). I will recommend it to all my fellow travelers visiting Peru, Cusco, Machu Picchu. By the way, if you are concerned about hot water, this room (Room 4) and I believe two others have hot water. I stayed in Room 2 for a night and the water was a bit chilly. They hope to upgrade in the future so that all rooms have hot water and heat...yay! The rooms can get cold, but under those blankets I was sweating. Maybe a small room heater can do the trick for those early morning wake-ups. Let's see, what else can I say. It's safe. Completely trusted leaving my belongings (luggage) there. Not much to do there in Huaracondo (no restaurants or nightlife if that is what you are looking for)...it's quiet (which we liked), but also safe and clean. (people are nice)...you will pretty much be the only tourists there. For those of you who are on a budget, speak spanish, and don't mind public commute....do all the touristy stuff on your own so you are not rushed and can be more flexible with your time (if your itinerary permits). As for MP we booked through the agency, left to Aguascalientes 8/26, went to MP 8/29 and spend another night in Aguascalientes, and left the next day 8/29 (sure you can do everything in one day or even two, but we are so glad we did it this way). As for the altitude we didn't experience any sickness (took medicine for it, bring some pepto and antiacid). If I forgot to add anything, I will put in on my review for room 2. In summary, gringowasi is HIGHLY recommended.. Thanks Lyle and Lily....you are always welcome here in Los Angeles!!! Until next...
