Experience a fishermen's view of Sitka aboard the M/V Sound Judgment. Nestled into Thompson-Eliason Harbor, the nation's 9th most prolific fishing port, a stay aboard Sound Judgement offers you an authentic experience of the docks in romantic Sitka-by-the-Sea.

The boat offers an on-board head and full kitchen, two berths that sleep up to four adults, city water and electric, and beautiful wood and brass finishes. A Chevy Compass minivan can be left at airport and will be yours for the stay.

The space
This classic Northwest motor cruiser offers two roomy sleeping quarters, and all the amenities of town life. Located in a bustling harbor, guests can watch the fleet come and go from the flybridge, as the sun sets over Mt. Edgecumbe. Sip your morning coffee while watching bald eagles soar and land on masts above you, and enjoy an afternoon paddling the canoe amongst the local seals and sea otters.

Guest access
Sound Judgment is located in a working commercial harbor. Directions and your slip number will be provided before check-in. Guests can park in the harbor parking lot.

M/V Sound Judgment is just a short walk away from the grocery store and laundromat. Downtown shopping and restaurants are less than a mile from the harbor, accessible via a scenic walk past the waterfront fish processing facilities along Katlian Street.

Other things to note
Some peculiarities of dock life:

-wifi is not available in the harbor, but Sitka has reliable cellular service. You will need a mobile hotspot to access the internet from the boat.

-the toilet is a marine head, it cannot handle anything other than personal waste and the toilet paper provided. If anything else is placed in the toiler, it will break, and we will have to charge a fee of $250 for parts and servicing.

-you may see marine mammals and other wildlife in the harbor, please do not feed them. These are wild animals and have abundant natural food sources.

A former Stegner Fellow at Stanford, he teaches an online course for Stanford, commercial fishes, and teaches at University of Alaska. His novel The Alaskan Laundry, published in April by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, was selected by Oprah, won the 2017 Alaskana Award, and was longlisted for the Center for Fiction Flaherty-Dunnan Debut Novel Prize. He lives in Sitka with his wife and three daughters.
