St Pancras Clock Tower Guest Suite

A mini apartment within the clock tower apartment at St Pancras Station, with its own en suite bathroom and kitchen and sitting area. It sits in Sir George Gilbert Scott's gothic revival railway hotel building from 1868. Ideal for 1 week holidays.

The Space

This flat above St Pancras International is in the famous clock tower. A ten metre high room in the tower looks out on many of London's landmarks such as St Paul's Cathedral. A large kitchen/dining room on the top floor looks out over Kings Cross Station. The flat has two double bedrooms, one used by the owner or other guests.

As the flat is on the 5th floor and fully equipped with secondary glazing, the road and railway noise is very low and almost nobody notices it but I would advise delicate sleepers to be aware of it before booking.

The suite is available for short or long-term letting and ideally suits couples on holiday in London for a few days or a week.

There is additional bedding available by prior arrangement if one or two others want to stay but this needs to be discussed with the owner at the time of booking. Clean towels are provided as standard as are soap/shampoo.

This listing is very heavily booked but it may be worth looking on my other listing (ST PANCRAS CLOCK TOWER MASTER SUITE) which is for the master bedroom which I let out when I am not using it. The main difference is that you would then have to use the main kitchen too. Or contact me with an enquiry and I will let you know.

Although I have increased the price a bit recently due to the high level of demand, I am willing to be flexible, particularly for longer stays.

Little things are provided in the flat, such as London Oyster cards for public transport (electronic cards for you to use and top up), a UK SIM loaded cellphone, a hairdryer, an international plug adaptor, umbrella.

The clock tower was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott like an Italian bell tower but never held bells. The clock never has and does not ring.

Guest Access

This listing is for a suite best described as an apartment within an apartment. It is for a bedroom with double bed, en suite bathroom, en suite kitchen and sofa and table and TV. There is central hi-fi throughout the house and a hifi jack in a wall in the room.

Please be aware that you will be sharing the flat with the owner or with other guests. Occasionally the flat is used for day functions, evening pop-up restaurants or photo shoots but I shall try to inform you of any such appointments. Both bedrooms have en suite bathrooms and lockable doors for security. The main clocktower room is upstairs in the flat and you are welcome to use it, subject to liaising if there are other people staying in the flat. It is also sometimes used by local community groups but I will let you know if it is.

I am as flexible as I can be on arrival and departure but it is essential that visitors consult me on and keep to their plans, so that I can manage my cleaner and bed changing and make sure there aren't two couples competing for the same bedroom at the same time of day.

I have marked it as handicap accessible. It is not straightforward (there is an extra elevator to use) but easy to sort out as long as I know in advance so I can give the instructions clearly.

I am willing to accept the business of one night bookings but reserve the right to ask you to change the bedding for the following visitor if time is tight.

Interaction with Guests

I am not always at St Pancras because I spend a lot of time up in Cambridge where I am finishing the restoration and conversion of some buildings going back to the 16th century. I try to diary to meet my guests if I can but if I am not there when you arrive, the concierge will supply you with the key to the apartment.

Parties

If you want to hold a celebration party, please discuss it with me. Any events going beyond 2230 normally require a booking to be made for the whole apartment as it is otherwise unfair on other guests. A 500 pound security deposit will normally be required for any groups in excess of 20. The main rules are that loud music does not go on beyond 2330, that guests do not mill out into the corridors of the building, that there is no glitter/confetti/paper string and that you agree to pay for any extra carpet cleaning required by large numbers.

The Neighborhood

It is within walking distance of many of London's sights, from the British Library next door to the British Museum and the West End 20-25 minutes away. There are lots of shops in St Pancras Station. The best mainstream grocery store nearby is Waitrose in the Brunswick Centre. There is more public transport within 100m than almost anywhere else on the planet (buses, metro, rail).

What is really exciting about Kings Cross now is its pace of development. New office buildings will house the European HQ of (website hidden) and many other businesses. As offices are completed, they are fully let such is the demand for space in this area.

The opening of new restaurants and shopping facilities now and over the coming years is transforming a former post-industrial desert to one of the most exciting parts of the metropolis.

Getting around

The public transport is fantastic. There are 5 underground lines and dozens of bus routes as well as the mainline services to the north (St Pancras to Leicester, Sheffield, Derby), the north-east (Kings Cross to Edinburgh, York, Leeds, Cambridge), the south-east (St Pancras to Canterbury, Dover), the continent (St Pancras to Paris, Brussels) and the north-west (Euston to Liverpool, Birmingham, Manchester).

All London airports are easy (St Pancras to Luton or Gatwick), the Piccadilly Line to Heathrow), the Metropolitan and DLR to City), the Victoria and mainline train to Stansted) or Liverpool Street to Southend.

Other Things to Note

This is a great building to stay in. Please do respect the fact that the building is home to many other residents and be careful not to disturb them if you are taking photographs in the common areas.

  • Twin peaks: The incredible tower itself, with its atmospheric and most comfy apartment inside AND Peter himself, who, as host, is the heart and soul of the experience. In our case, as seems so common in these reviews, that experience was just terrific. We put an unusual demand on Peter by letting my seven year-old daughter invite a few friends for tea and biscuits. Those friends brought siblings and parents which ballooned the traffic somewhat, but he remained extremely friendly, calm, generous. There were no issues or questions for which Peter did not have a ready and warm answer, and commensurately, the accommodation was so well-prepared as to pre-empt any issues at all. I'm telling everyone about this unique and uniquely pleasant place to spend nights in London.

  • We were 3 people staying 2 nights,very good (email hidden)e room we have,had one double bed,own bathroom and kitchen.The bed for nr 3 could maybe be better but it works well.
    The apartment was clean and with good information from Peter himself and brochure in the rom, the stay for me was like I expected.

  • We were really looking forward to staying in this historic building, and we weren't disappointed. The guest suite has plenty of space and the view over the city is great at any time of day or night. Seeing inside the clocktower room was an added bonus. We also explored the backstairs in the building: from there, you get a great view down into the main railway station. When we had visitors on bikes, the concierge was extremely helpful about access to secure storage. So all in all, a lovely stay.

  • Staying in the Clock Tower Guest Suite was perfect. The building itself is straight out of a fairy-tale, and it is so well-connected you can easily get to anywhere you need to go in London. Or - if you're strapped for time - just enjoy the excellent restaurants and pubs in and around the station.

    I was attending a conference nearby at King's Place, which was really convenient, but the apartment is also only a 15 min walk from the British Museum and adjacent to the British Library.

    The apartment itself is great - good bed, great shower, well-supplied kitchen. Plus a really comfortable seating area where you can chill out after a day enjoying London.

    Peter is a lovely host, really helpful and accommodating. I thoroughly recommend staying at his out of this world apartment - I will definitely come back and stay again!

  • My friend and I stayed in the self-contained guest suite for 5 nights, and it was wonderful. The Clock Tower apartment retains and incorporates many historical features -- I am so jealous that Peter owns this amazing reminder of the Industrial Age! It was quiet even though we were in a very busy area at the confluence of two major train stations: the most we heard (or rather, felt) with the windows closed was the occasional distant rumble of a train. From five stories up we had a cool urban view of everyday London, and it made us feel surprisingly connected to the city. The suite was private -- most of the time we didn't even realize there were other people in the flat. Peter was the impeccable host, friendly, kind, and thoughtful. Minor problems were dealt with efficiently and unobtrusively. He invited us to a small dinner party one night, and though I might have been the only vegetarian there, he made the entire meal deliciously vegetarian! We had a marvelous stay, and would love to stay with Peter again.
