This three bedroom craftsman home in the charming downtown San Diego neighborhood of South Park has been completely renovated and features a private patio and shared yard, full use of the kitchen, and enough beds for 4 (in addition to a included, and really comfy, queen size air matress (2 more) and couch space an additional 1).
Though the home is walking distance to Balboa Park, and less than three miles from the San Diego Zoo & downtown San Diego, the neighborhood is very quiet and offers plenty to do. The home is also walking distance from the 30th street corridor, many restaurants, and some of the best beer bars in the country. My favorite place for a drink is Hamiltons Tavern (check out this NY Times travel article - (website hidden)), but if you just want a nice night in, feel free walk our growler down to the Stone company beer store. Travelers wishing to explore further are only 10 minutes from downtown or five minutes from Balboa park via a nearby bus stop, or several small rental cars from the company car2go.
At our pad, travelers also have access to our shared patio area with covered shade, fire pit, yard, kid's playhouse, free wireless internet, powerful Ipod compatible stereos (in both the master bedroom and the living room), our record collection and player, plenty of pots and pans to cook something tasty, ample closet space, free laundry (washer and dryer), and more!
Guests will have private access to the full 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom home, including kitchen and laundry facilities. Guests will also have access to a private porch with rocking chairs in front of the home.
Guest will also have access to the backyard (with hammock, outdoor seating, and BBQ grill), but seeing as this is a multi-unit property they will share the space with 2 other long-term renters.
Interaction with Guests
I can recommend services and restaurants via phone or Airbnb app, but most of the time we let guests have the property to themselves.
You are welcome to use spices and cooking supplies. Please leave food (dry and canned goods) as you found them.
Very sweet South Park neighborhood with bungalows and beautiful gardens. Though residential, it was also centrally located and a quick trip to anywhere we wanted to be. Matthew was very accommodating and quick to respond when we had questions, and the house was true to the photos with a lovely back patio, spacious kitchen and dining room, and great design throughout. It's clear his family has put love into the home.
Matthew's house was great in all aspects. Perfectly situated close enough to all the SD action, but in a quiet neighborhood with cute coffee shops and restaurants within walking distance. We were traveling with little ones in tow and so when they walked into the nursery and saw all the books, they were super pumped. We read a different one each night.
Two things I didn't notice before booking, which may not be an issue to some people, 1) this house has an upstairs unit and in-law back house rented out by long-term tenants so the outdoor space is not yours alone, and 2) there is no tv. Listen, a break from tv is awesome, but sometimes my kids need a little distraction so grownups can shower, etc. So just make sure to bring along a laptop and take advantage of the wifi.
I'd definitely recommend to a friend traveling to SD!
Matthews house was totally amazing! It has nice showers, comfy beds an a large backyard. We have never seen matthew in person but the airbnb-messaging worked perfectly. He is uncomplicated and easy-going. I would totally recommend going to this place!
What can I say that hasn't already been said. matt has been a great host. This is my second time renting from Mathew and I have to say " The Craftsman " does not disappoint. Its clean, comfortable, and just a great neighborhood.
Matt's house was a great place to stay for our San Diego vacation. It is family friendly with a cute little nursery and a great back (shared) yard for the kids to play in. There is plenty of room for kids and parents to have spread out and for parents to have privacy and space to themselves after the kiddos are asleep, which is something you won't get from hotel room! The house is beautifully remodeled and in a cool part of town, walking distance to coffee shops, a grocery store and restaurants. The kitchen is well-stocked and great for cooking in with its ample counter space, chef's stove and farm sink.
Matt was a good communicator and very available to respond to any concern we had. We ran into a few snags while staying there (caused by a rowdy, messy group that had rented the place before us)--I communicated these issues to Matt and he addressed them promptly and courteously.
You should know that this place is on a property that has multiple long-term renters (a very nice family in an in-law unit in back and a very quiet female renter in the unit above the house). The renters were very quiet and kept to themselves so they were no bother to us, but if you are looking to rent a whole house that is very private, you should just be aware of the situation.
Loved staying at Matt's charming quiet cottage! The place was clean and nicely decorated. It was perfect for my family. Matt and Brooke were very thoughtful in leaving a welcoming letter, bus routes and menus for local dining. In addition, there were some great restaurants we just walked to a few minutes away. Matt was very kind and accommodating and I would certainly recommend staying at his place. Hopefully, I will have a chance to stay there again when I am back in the area..
Matts place was a great place to stay in. Great parking and located in a nice area, being able to get around San Diego. I would recommend staying at his place if you're looking for a place to stay in San Diego

My wife and I are teachers in San Diego, California, and enjoy travelling on our summer vacations. We are always interested in meeting new people and getting to know new cultures. We are new to airbnb, but we have hosted many people from other countries before, and we have traveled rather extensively. If you are coming to San Diego when we are here then we would love to show you around. If we are coming to your town, then I hope you can o the same (if you are available!) We look forward to meeting you!
