The Bastion was a lovely, comfortable place, and Anthony was a charming, welcoming host. It's not a generic B&B -- it's infused with an eclectic, artistic style. We stayed in the "Loft", which had room for four people in a spacious, funky layout. Our girls really liked having their own section, set off from the rest of the room by a short stairway. Really nice place to stay in a fantastic location just around the corner from Athlone Castle. Very short walking distance to the main square.
We had a lovely stay at Bastion BnB. Our room the loft room was so very cool. We loved it! It was very clean and spacious. Enjoyed the ensuite bathroom as well. It was in an ideal location. We walked everywhere. The continental breakfast was varied and filling. I would recommend bastion BnB to anyone. We didn't meet Anthony but met his brother Vinny. He was very friendly and helpful.
The Bastion b&b was an easy find, it looks exactly as it does in the pictures, and one's attention is drawn to the colors when coming up the street . The loft was gorgeous, as was the house: eclectic and well thought out, being in it feels like living in a piece of art... The kind made from the heart. Anthony himself is a pretty magical man, patient, humorous and thoughtful. My mother and I throughly enjoyed our stay, the loft allowed us each our privacy and peace, the shower was nice, and everything we needed was in easy reach. Athlone , the people , the place, the history and the charm were well worth coming for .
Anthony was on the spot with communication which made it easy. Upon our arrival, he was very helpful in lettings us know what there was to do in Athlone. The room was as advertised - clean and spacious. The B&B is a cool, quirky place. We very much enjoyed our short stay. Would stay again.
What a great place for our first night in Ireland! Loved the BnB, the town is picturesque and walkable. And Anthony is a great host. Highly recommend!

About the Host, Anthony
Hi I'm Anthony. I run The Bastion B&B with my brother Vinny. Our house is named after the Royal Bastion which once occupied the street where we are.
Our house is a bit of a labyrinth inside. There's lots of history here. The world famous Irish tenor John Count McCormack often visited in the early 1900s. More recently we had Michael Jackson downstairs at The Bastion Gallery!
Our style is laid back and relaxed. We love good food and the left bank area is a gourmet district with lots of great restaurants and pubs. You definitely won't go hungry here. Ireland's Oldest Bar is just down the hill. There is music most evenings. Close by, McGuire's Bar boasts over 100 craft beers.
The beautiful river Shannon is just at the end of the street. The imposing and enormous stone castle built by King John in 1210 majestically guards the river crossing.
In 1691 the area was besieged by the armies of King William of Orange in a battle with King James for the English throne. Thirty thousand cannon balls were fired across the river in the barrage that ensued. We have one of them!
The nearby Luan Gallery hosts great exhibitions throughout the year.
