Monti is the name of one of the twelve Rioni of Rome, rione I. The name literally means mountains in Italian and comes from the fact that the Esquiline and the Viminal Hills, and parts of the Quirinal and the Caelian Hills belonged to this rione. Its logo consists of three green mountains with three tops on a silver background.
Today the Esquilino, Castro Pretorio and Celio districts do not belong to it anymore, but it has kept its name.
In ancient times the rione was densely populated: in Monti there were the Forum Romanum and the so-called Suburra (meaning suburbs in Latin): this was the place poor people lived, full of disreputable locals and brothels.
In the Middle Ages the situation was completely different: the Roman aqueducts were damaged, and it was very difficult to bring water to Monti since it was on the hills. Hence many inhabitants moved to Campus Martius, a lower level part, where they could drink the water from the river Tiber.
From the Middle Ages to the beginning of the 19th century, the rione remained an area full of vineyards and market gardens. Monti was not densely populated because of the lack of water and because it was quite far from the Vatican, the center of Christian culture. The area did not become abandoned thanks to the church of San Giovanni in Laterano and the constant high number of pilgrims.
Still in the Middle Ages the inhabitants of Monti, called monticiani, developed a strong identity: their Roman dialect was different from that spoken in the other rioni. Their main enemies were the people from the other rione with a strong identity, Trastevere, and they often used to fight with one another.
Then, with growing urbanization at the end of the 19th century after Rome had become the capital of a united Italy, the great changes of the Fascist period completely changed the appearance of the rione. In particular, between 1924 and 1936, a large part of the rione, consisting of small streets and popular houses, was destroyed to make way for the Via dei Fori Imperiali (the street artificially dividing the Roman Forum and most of the Imperial forums) and the archaeological buildings of the Forum Romanum were excavated.
Thanks to its position, Monti is full of archaeological sites such as:
-Ludus Magnus (the gym for gladiators)
-Nero's Domus Aurea
-the baths of Trajan
-the baths of Titus
-part of the Forum Romanum
-markets of Trajan
The Domus Alberti is located in the historic center, and services are all available, as is a bus stop 20 meters, 100 meters of a bus stop Taxy, 400 meters Metro Station called Repubblica.

Mille grazie, Federico!
Perfect Airbnb stay, very well located to Rome's main sights and the Roma Termini bus station. Frederico was an excellent, responsive host - providing a comprehensive induction as well as written, useful information on sights, restaurants and transport. We have now stayed here twice and both rooms (Fori Imperiali and Colosseum) are clean and modern being furnished to a very high standard. Daily maid service includes complimentary juice, water and fresh towels. Access to the required 4th floor is easy via lift. We look forward to staying at Domus Alberti again and have recommended it to family and friends.
We had a great 3 day stay at Domus Alberti. Federico was a great host, the room was spotless quiet and comfortable. The breakfast was really good and the coffee machine was awesome! Thanks Federico!
This was my second stay at Domus Alberti and it was just as good as the first. The apartments are well located, clean and comfortable. Federico is an excellent host and provides comprehensive information on places to visit, restaurants and transport.
Frederico was a lovely host and made a huge effort to ensure we understood where everything was, and we had a fantastic time thanks to him and his hospitality.
Federico's B&B was the best place I had the pleasure of staying in during my recent 9 day trip through Italy - I would equate the room to a "suite" in a 4-5 star hotel. You cannot ask for a more prime location - you are steps away from "via Nazionale" (one of the main streets)...essentially a 6 min walk away from the Repubblica metro station and a 10 min walk away from the Piazza Venezia which is right beside the Colosseum, Palantine Hills, and the Roman Forum.
Federico was an amazing host who was friendly, flexible in accommodating some last minute requests, and very helpful in recommending places in the city to eat and visit (he has created his own custom Visitor's Guide which he prints out and gives to all his guests!).
Bottom Line: The next time I visit Rome, I will definitely be contacting Federico and hoping he has a vacancy.
Our stay at Frederico's place was wonderful! My boyfriend and I really felt like home. The location is great, with easy metro and bus access, but also you can walk almost everywhere from the house. The room was really modern and clean, with complimentary water, which was great since we were there in August, when the weather in Rome is really hot. There is a common dining room, where you can sit and have a coffee or complimentary breakfast and also use a shared computer and printer. This proved to be very useful since we could book our Vatican and Colosseum tickets, print them and take them with us (there is also free wifi). We booked the room the same morning of our arrival, because we were on the move travelling around Italy, so we weren't certain about our date of arrival. Frederico immediately confirmed our booking and set up everything for our arrival. Upon our arrival, the host gave us a map, directions and suggestions, which were really helpful. The day of our departure, we were able to leave our luggage in the office, after checking out, since we were flying late that night. This was extremely helpful since we didn't have to carry around the city our luggage and we got to enjoy the full day without worrying about our stuff. This was my first Airbnb booking and I have to say that it was really great and I was pleasantly surprised by the efficiency, coziness and professionalism of our host and airbnb. Thank you for the great hospitality!
