And don't miss Uncle Robert's at the West end of the road for a unique island experience filled with music, dance, food and local crafts on Wednesdays and music on friday and Saturday evenings. The Neighborhood

A quote from a recent guest
"This is probably the coolest house in the coolest neighborhood on the big island. You'll be in Seaview, a block from the lavarock shore. Seaview is filled with friendly island hippies who say hi when they pass you, and everyone knows the Triangle House. Some people know it as the "Cheese House," because it looks like a wedge of swiss cheese lying on its side, with each window a porthole. This is my favorite neighborhood in the 4 that I've stayed at on the big island (kailua-kona/captain cook, hilo, volcano/mt view, na'alehu/ocean view). You're living in a gorgeous jungle, with great ocean access, a plethora of interesting artists and hippies, and the best neighborhood spirit I've seen. Every wednesday, the whole community of the Puna district ends up at a fair on the edge of civilization where the 1970 lava flow literally rolled over the city of Kalapana, called "Uncle Roberts at the End of the Road." I don't know a better way to say hello to a new community than that. Randall is a great host. He's a craftsman who cares a lot about the building, and is trying to improve its design for the people who stay in it. He's super easy to work with. He's been doing constant work on the property. It was designed by an architect who had a dream about "round holes and square pegs" and designed a property with a Triangle house, a Rectangle house, a Circle water catchman, and two Square sheds. There's also a real-life castle next-door. It's like living in a dream."

  • We had a great stay at Randall's place. It was comfortable and had everything we needed. He's a great host and gave us a lot of good tips on what to see. (Don't miss the great local farm market at The Space!) We loved being in this beautiful area. Our only regret is that we didn't stay long enough to enjoy it all. We loved the beautiful canopied drive up the coast to the warm lava pools, and saw some spectacular scenery. It was nice to get away from the resort scene and enjoy this quieter area. It's close to Volcanoes National Park and all it has to offer (loved the winery!). We would definitely stay here again.

  • This is a great studio apartment just a couple of blocks away from the ocean. We loved staying in this part of Hawaii off the beaten path. The studio was clean, well appointed, and had everything we needed. If you go to the area, be sure to work a Wednesday night into your stay. Uncle Roberts Awa Club at the end of the road (5 miles?) hosts a big Hawaiian party/farmers market every Wednesday with lots of amazing food, drink and music. It definitely felt like "real Hawaii."

  • This studio was really tucked away near the south-east corner of the island, which was both great on some days and tiring on others (you have to drive at least thirty minutes to get to a connecting highway that'll get you to another part of the island). The fact that the building is a few minutes from the ocean was a wonderful start to every day. We arrived on the first night past sunset, and I wouldn't recommend anyone trying to locate this place after dark, since there is no street lighting and no illumination from any other houses nearby. It took us some time to figure out whether we were in the right place. Also, it wasn't clear that we were supposed to enter the suite through the sliding glass doors and not the main door. It was confusing. Since all the windows and doors were closed when we arrived, the air was quite stale (and this being one of the house rules, we were greeted with the lack of ventilation whenever we returned to the studio). Nevertheless, the apartment had pretty much everything we needed, including kitchenware and a hair dryer (our essentials). It was also nice to know that the water used in the building came from a nearby tank that caught water from the sky. This was very impressive to us and we made as much effort as possible to conserve water. We were astonished to see how bright the sky was lit with stars at night and the beautiful sounds of the bugs lulled us to sleep.

  • Elaine Marie is an incredible person with a beautiful, giving, loving spirit and I feel so fortunate to have connected with her. I really enjoyed my quiet, relaxing stay at her lovely studio, which is located close to several attractions in the Pahoa area. But what made my visit so much more memorable and valuable was the friendship Elaine Marie demonstrated to me.
