Description

The Space

It's set in a forever blooming beautiful garden, one minute off the red road and a short walk to Kehena Black Sand Beach. It's close enough to the ocean to hear the whales blowing and slapping their tails when in season. This 600 square foot modern studio apartment is bright, airy, and clean. It has WiFi and phone, located in the front lanai. You will enjoy a private lanai with lovely table with swivel rockers. The bathroom is done in imported Italian Blue tiles and features a whirlpool tub and rain shower. The kitchenette has a induction burner, microwave, toaster, smoothie blender, coffee maker, coffee grinder, dishes, pots and pans, sink, and half size refrigerator. A queen size bed, dining area and comfortable reading chair complete this amazing space. There is also a clothes washer with soap, and a line drying area at your disposal. Perfect for a couple or single.

Nearby natural hot springs and tide pools offer awesome snorkeling, soaking and swimming in safe warm water, right at the ocean's edge. Or you can explore the old Hawaiian town of Pahoa, a twenty minutes drive away with its wooden board walks, many restaurants and markets.

Kalani Ocean side retreat is just a short walk or two minute drive away offering meals, massages and use of there pools and sauna for very reasonable rates.

The County operated bus service "Hele-On" stops one block away twice daily.

The neighbors and "locals" in Kalapana Sea View as well as the surrounding areas are relaxed, helpful, and friendly, and I have found, they will always give excellent tips on the best current things to do in the local area. So don't be afraid to schmooze a little. And don't miss Uncle Robert's at the West end of the road for a unique island experience filled with music, dance, food and local crafts on Wednesday nights, and music on friday and Saturday evenings.

We can connect you to a local guide service to show you into the hard to get to, and little-known special spots for very reasonable rates. Rates will vary depending on group size, transportation, difficulty, outfitting and duration. Please feel free to inquire.

We also offer pickup at the Hilo airport for $45 for up to three people and light luggage.

Interaction with Guests

Having had luck with AirBnB's wonderful guests, we are blessed to have you stay here with us. It is my and Michaels' goal to interact as much (or as little) with you as is necessary, and hope our relationship is fun, informative and mutually beneficial. No more and no less.

The Neighborhood

Here is a recent quote from one of our guests:

"This is probably the coolest house in the coolest neighborhood on the Big Island. You'll be in the Seaview neighborhood, a block from the lava rock shore. Seaview is filled with friendly island folks and retired hippies who say "Aloha" when they pass you, and most everyone knows the Triangle House complex. Some people know it as the " Cheese House," because it looks like a wedge of Swiss cheese lying on its side, with each stained glass window a hole. You're living in a gorgeous jungle, with great ocean access, a plethora of interesting artists, and alternative living folk, with the best neighborhood spirit I've seen. Every Wednesday, practically the whole community of the Puna district ends up at a bazaar on the edge of civilization where the 1970 lava flow literally rolled over the city of Kalapana, called "Uncle Roberts at the End of the Road." I don't know a better way to say hello to a new community than that. Randall is a great owner/manager. He's a craftsman who cares a lot about the building, and has improved its' initial design for the people who stay in it. MIchael, the onsite Innkeeper, is super easy to work with. He's been doing constant gardening and upkeep on the property. It was designed by an architect who had a dream about "round holes and square pegs" and designed a property with a Triangle house, a Rectangle house, a Circle shaped water catchment, and two Square sheds. There's also a real life castle one block away. It's like living in a dream."

Getting Around

There is very limited public transportation here. A bus to and from Pahoa town, and/or Hilo city runs through the area only one block away, but only twice a day. It is definitely suggest that you rent a vehicle for your commute, but more daring folks will hitchhike or walk. Hitchhiking is technically illegal, but is not frowned upon by most locals.

We have private water catchment, so please conserve water when possible. Though it is treated, sediment and charcoal filtered, it is not cerified public drinking water. Bringing your own is highly suggested.

This community observes the "Dark Sky" policy to maintain stunning night sky viewing. Please keep interior and exterior lighting to a minimum. The more lights on at night, the more BUGS and MOSQUITOS are likely to get inside to YOU.

Do not move or rearrange the heavy furniture we bill for floor scratches/gouges and the extra help to put it back the way it was.
