About This Listing
If you wish to write, paint, live...come to the fairytale old village of Kato Mixorouma, and stay in a stone-built cottage in a garden flooded with flowers and trees on the bank of the river full of ducks and gees, and let the singing of the birds and the splashing of the river rock you to sleep and calm you. The property contains two small cottages, approximately 50sq m each in a 1000 sq m lot. The cottage in this ad has a small but practical kitchen, a living room with fireplace and a bathroom which is access through the living room and is semi open air. The sleeping area for 2, is on the built-in mezzanine. The cottages are quite simple, but appropriate. Mrs Angela, the owner, will offer true Cretan hospitality during your stay.
The History of Kato Mixorouma
The village is in a very calm place surrounded by mountains right on the river. It is in the old historical village of Kato Mixorouma where very few people currently live, as the new village is built about 200-300 meters away. The village has old houses of traditional cretan architecture, which we are now in the process of trying to get the state to fund in order to preserve and define it as a traditional village. Here is a little bit of history….The settlement of Kato Mixorouma is referenced in the first known recording of settlements in Crete by Fr.Barozzi in 1577 and in the Basilicata in 1630. It is also referenced in the Turkish census in 1659 and in the Egyptian census in 1834.
The Kato Mixorouma is built on the north bank of the river which starts in Spili, running year round with lush vegetation dominated by trees, willows, myrtles, oleanders, reeds and citrus. The spectacle that the visitor sees is impressive. The beauty truly captivates the senses. It is a picturesque village with stone houses of special architecture with three mills which (despite the ravages of time) are characteristic monument of the life of the local residents combined with the exploitation of natural resources.
One of the three water mills had multiple uses as it was used in parallel as a flour mill, olive mill and a fabric mill (to create more coherent fabrics). All water mills are located in the same building with three separate wells. So the village soon became an innovative industrial center of the time and we can understand the importance of Kato Mixorouma in the local economy and its contribution to the further development of the region. Similarly, the vegetation along the river gave the raw material for the basketry craft to be developed and become an exquisite craft. Villagers still create lovely baskets in Mixorouma.
Hints & Tips from the Owner:
There is a supermarket, bakery and plenty of "kafenia" (traditional coffee shops) located at about 200m in the new village of Mixorouma. About 2.5km away, in Spili, you can find everything you need from services (post office, bank, pharmacy, health center etc) to coffee shops, super markets, taverns and more. From Kato Mixorouma you can explore both the northern and southern part of the island, the beautiful coastal towns of Ag. Galini, the famous beaches of Triopetra and Agios Pavlos, Preveli lake and monastery, the breathtaking Kourtaliotiko gorge, the less known beaches of Ammoudi, Sxinaria, Damnoni and lastely the cosmopolitan village of Plakias. The city of Rethymnon is about 20km away for plenty of nightlife options. For the most adventurous, the E4 trail, which begins just next to the cottage, will eventually lead you to the magnificent Preveli lake!
Please treat our house as you would treat your own. Check out is flexible, during daytime hours, to be confirmed with me. Don't hesitate to ask for whatever you need.
Do yourself a massive favor and come to this place! It's absolutely stunning! Angela is super nice and friendly, and though we didn't get to try her famous mussaka everybody's talking about...she is just so nice and helpful with tips for daytrjps (website hidden) short, with the tiny exception of the bed not being supercomfy,it's a little piece of heaven! Just remember to bring your misquote repellant!
Efharisto poly Angela! I'm sending some freinds over!:)
Angela was the perfect host and even greeted us with a delicious homemade moussaka! The accomodation was perfect. The surroundings were idyllic, set in a small valley with a beautiful stream going past. It offered an escape from the hussel and bussel of a town in the heart of nature. Yet at the same time the local bakery was just a few minutes walk away as well, so we had the best of both worlds. I would highly recommend this place for someone wanting to escape the more conventional accommodation on offer in Crete, and wanting a more authentic Greek experience.
We enjoyed our stay in Angela's cottage SO much!!
It is a wonderful, cute, excotic paradise =)
Beautiful and such a great get-away!
Angela is exceptionally friendly and humorous. She picked us up at the bus station and had prepared cokies, raki and wine and made dinner for us one night =)
Mixoruma is an amazingly beatiful area!
Hope to see you again =)
